Joining Systems Description

BTMs Tog-L-Loc and Lance-N-Loc joining systems produce clean, strong
and consistent joints in most coated or uncoated metals. The joints are
characterized by a button formed on the die side layer of metal and a recess formed in the punch side layer. The button is a good indicator of joint
quality and therefore, simplies quality control. Two or more layers of metal
typically ranging in thickness from .008 (0.2mm) to .157 (4.0mm) per sheet
can be reliably joined in most cases.

Tog-L-Loc Basics
A Tog-L-Loc / Lance-N-Loc system consists of 5 major components.
1. The Force Mechanism:
A device capable of producing sufcient force to form the joint(s). Hydraulic, pneumatic or mechanical presses
are generally used.
2. The Force Frame:
Forces must be contained to prohibit
exing at the punch / die. Deection will
cause degraded joint strength and tool
breakage.

3. The Tog-L-Loc / Lance-N-Loc Punch:

Tog-L-Loc punches are available in various
tip diameters (see joint size page 5), lengths
and styles to suit differing application requirements. The perimeter of the round Tog-L-Loc punch tip has a slight radius to prevent
piercing. Lance-N-Loc punches are also available in various lengths and styles.
The square Lance-N-Loc punch tip has cutting edges on two sides and angular
ramps on the other two.

4. The Stripper:
Both Tog-L-Loc and LanceN-Loc require use of a
spring stripper / clamping
mechanism which surrounds the punch tip. The
stripper must preload the
parts before punch entry,
and must allow full punch
travel. The spring force
must be sufcient to clamp
the parts together during
joining and prohibit upward extrusion of the metal
around the punch.

5. The Tog-L-Loc / Lance-N-Loc Die:

Tog-L-Loc dies are available in many styles to suit differing application requirements. The dies
have a xed anvil which is recessed from movable or pivoting blades. A radius is given to
the blades inside edge. Dies are retained by ball lock, set screws or socket head cap screws.
The 940 Tog-L-Loc and Lance-N-Loc dies feature a one piece anvil and shield. A spring is
used to close the 940 blades.
Lance-N-Loc dies are also available in various styles, however, all are two bladed. The blades
have cutting edges to the inside, with a xed anvil recessed from the blade surface.
Blade shields are supplied with several die styles. These shields protect the die blades from
the force of the stripper and help to retain the blade assembly to the die. In some cases, dies
are mounted in pockets within a block which functions as the shield.

Tooling Descriptions
Tog-L-Loc and Lance-N-Loc tools come in three standard joint sizes, expressed as the punch tip
diameter or width. The correct joint size for a given application is determined by the following:
1. Thickness of metal being joined.
2. Available clearance or ange size.

Standard BTM Joint Sizes

3. Strength required of each joint.

Refer to charts on pages 9, 13, & 17.

Tooling Descriptions
TOOL SELECTION
1. Determine which joint size to use.
Joint strength increases with joint size (see example). Force required to produce the joint also increases, as does the physical size of the tooling. Choosing the correct joint size for a given application
involves determining the strength required of each joint, and accessibility of the joining site. The 4,6
joint is the most commonly used size in practical application.
Joint Sizes:

2. Choose the correct tool numbers from the charts.

Tog-L-Loc tools are "tuned" for the metals you will be joining. The charts
(pages 20-22) reference joint size, metal thickness, and tool length. Various
tool lengths allow access to differing part congurations and die designs.
Special tool holders may be fabricated when necessary to access difcult
parts.
BTM offers consultation for tool selection, and will join sample parts and provide strength test results for your evaluation. A handling charge is applied to
this service, contact BTM for details.

Joint Data
BTM sheet metal joining tools are furnished with joint data documentation
expressed in the following terms.
1. Joint Size: Expressed as the punch tip diameter (Tog-L-Loc) or width of the die
anvil (Lance-N-Loc). For example, a .18 Tog-L-Loc has a punch tip diameter of
.180 (4.6mm). Common sizes are: .12 (3.0mm), .18 (4.6mm), .22 (5.5 mm) and
.25 (6.4mm) with special sizes used on occasion.
2. PTR: (Punch Tip Radius): Tog-L-Loc only. Expressed as a decimal gure
example: .010 (0.25mm). This dimension is determined at BTM to suit the application. There are two available radii; 0.010 and 0.020

3. BD (Button Dimension): Diameter or width of the formed joint Button. BD is
expressed as a decimal gure and given a tolerance. Example: .295 +
.010 -.000 (7.49mm + .25mm -.000mm). This highly repeatable dimension
is used for quality control and is directly linked to joint strength.
4. AD (Anvil Depth): Depth from the top of the die blades to the top of the die
anvil. Expressed as a decimal gure Example: .035 (0.9mm). This dimension is determined at BTM to suit the application.

Joint quality (strength) is monitored by measurement of the button dimension

(BD). Button dimension is controlled by adjusting punch penetration. Button
dimensions specied by BTM are intended to give the optimum combination of
joint strength and tool life. BD specication includes a tolerance to accomodate
standard mill tolerances in the metals.

OTHER PERTINENT INFORMATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

12

1.

BTM numbers of punch and die tooling for reference and re-ordering.

2.

Metal type and thickness as specied by the customer, as well as

orientation - (i.e. punch side/die side.)

3.

Location of Tog-L-Loc tooling within machinery where applicable.

Joining Theory and Quality Control

In order to function reliably, a Tog-L-Loc or
Lance-N-Loc system must conform to the following guidelines.
1.

The parts to be joined must allow adequate access for the tooling and
mate without gaps at the joint locations.

2.

The metals to be joined must be sufciently ductile, within the thickness

capabilities of the system and the parts must conform to the tolerances the
machine was designed around.

3.

The machine must consistently produce sufcient force to form the joints.

4.

The machine must contain the force without excessive exing.

5.

The stripper/clamp must apply sufcient force to contain the ow of metal

within the die.

6.

The tooling must be appropriate to the metals being joined, (i.e. Tog-L-Loc or
Lance-N-Loc, joint size, AD and PTR.) Tools purchased for one metal type
and thickness may not give the best results with a different metal.

7.

The tooling must be adjusted & aligned to properly form the joints, and be
secured to maintain these settings.

8.

The machine and tooling must be maintained properly so that all components
perform their intended function. For example, worn seals can reduce force
output thereby affecting joining ability.

Die Charts

How to use these Die Charts

Each Die Chart contains information on what punch and die to use with different thicknesses of
metal. In addition the chart gives the shear and peel strength for previously tested joints. It should
be noted that each chart contains generalized data for mild steel. For optimum strength values,
samples of specic alloys and coatings may be submitted to BTM for testing.
Abbreviations Used:
A - Punch Length (listed rst in millimeters then in inches)
B - Die Length (listed rst in millimeters then in inches)
PTR - Punch Tip Radius (listed in inches)
AD - Anvil Depth (listed in inches)
BD - Average Button Dimension (listed in both millimeters and inches)
Charts are sorted by Die Side metal thickness (second column) and then by Punch Side metal
thickness (rst column).

Punch Information
General Design Guidelines
The punch should be guided a minimum of 1.12 (28.4mm) in the punch retainer.
The location tolerance to the centerline of the punch hole should be .0005 (.01mm)
The 940 punch mounting is preferred. While the set screw method is still acceptable.
If possible use a 5/16 - 24 set screw to retain a whistle notch punch, - 28 should be the minimum. The set screw should be perpendicular to the centerline of the punch.
The punch should have some means of adjustment. A backing plate or set screw behind the
holder would be an example.
The hole and tolerance for a standard diameter punch would be: .3750 +.0002 / -.0000
(9.525mm +.0051 / -.0000)
The hole and tolerance for a standard diameter punch would be: .5000 +.0002 / -.0000
(12.7mm +.0051 / -.0000)
The surface that the punch seats on should be through hardened. Typically, this material is 6150
with a hardness of 50-54 on the C scale.

Die Information
940 Series Die Assembly
The location tolerance to the centerline of the die hole should be .0005.
940 series dies require a knock out hole from the back side.
Because the 940 die has a built in blade shield the top of the die should not be
ush with the detail its mounted in. If anvil strength is not an issue, the typical
design method would expose the ring of small holes in the guard can.
The 940 die is better suited for applications exposed to coolants and lubricants.
Compared with a set screw, the 940 retention method is less likely to come loose
during normal machine cycling.
3 Bladed Elastomer
The location tolerance to the centerline of the die hole should be .0005.
3 bladed style A dies require a knock out hole from the back side.
3 bladed style A dies should have as much material protecting the blades as
possible.
Due to incompatibility between specic components of die compounds and the
standard Polyurethane (Yellow) Elastomer Rings, (2) alternative Elastomer
Rings may be used.
Following is a basic guide for usage of the alternatives.

How Lance-N-Loc
Page Title Works
Lance-N-Loc is a rectangular joint formed by drawing the
metals into a rectangular cup and then expanding the
sides to form a lock below the bottom sheet.

How the Joining Process Works

A stripper clamps the metals between

the punch and the die guard

The punch continues to travel,

squeezing the metals.

The punch shears two edged &

draws the metals into the die.

As the punch retracts, the stripper allows the punch to be removed.

The lateral ow of metal is accommodated bt the patented moving (self-cleaning) die

blades, forming a lock of greater width than the drawn section which accounts for high
strength of Lance-N-Loc. This entire sequence taked place in a single motion or press
stroke.
