ideas as much as possible

Programmed thinking
versus lateral thinking
Another way to think of brainstorming is to understand
what its not and how it differs from something we do
often in our day to day jobs programmed thinking.
Programmed thinking is using a structured or logical
framework to create a product, system or service. GS
Method, general project management, information
design, and quantitative and morphological analysis all
represent programmed thinking.
Lateral thinking is about jumping outside of traditional
patterns that we use to solve problems.
Brainstorming is different from the structural process that
we often use on projects, but both methods have a time
and place in our toolkit when used correctly.

Where programmed thinking

works
In the analysis or research stage
of a project
In the detailed design of a
product, service or system that
has been identified
Root cause analysis

Where Lateral thinking works

In improving an existing concept
Generating radical ideas
Making creative leaps
What are some areas in your company
where you can use lateral thinking?

that are connected to that
main topic. Draw arrows to
the sub-topics from the

My Favorite Book

My favorite book I dont know where to start. I read so many

books that are interesting that its hard to choose just one. I
guess I could start by talking about the kinds of books I really
like. I like biographies and autobiographies the best. I really
enjoy reading about another persons life. One of my favorite
books is called Roots by Alex Haley. How the author was able to
trace his family history all the way back to Africa was amazing!
Another book I really enjoyed was Carl Sandburgs biography of
Abraham Lincoln. What an incredible president! There are also
some very interesting books about leaders like Napoleon,
Churchill, and Stalin. Well, I guess that gives me a few ideas
about where I can start on my topic.

Encouraged Creative Thinking

The Disadvantages of Brainstorming

Only works when everyone in the room has
something to say.
Without strict control or leader present, the
group may take a long time to get the
solution.
Group with a large members will not effective.
People with high emotion are not allowed.
