2 Bay Area musicians win artist grants

Two Bay Area musicians, Danongan Kalanduyan of San Francisco and Daniel Plonsey
of El Cerrito, have each been awarded $50,000 grants by the national artist's advocacy
organization United States Artists.

IMAGES
Kalanduyan, 62, is a master of the kulintang musical
tradition of his native Philippines, and a leader in
spreading the tradition in the United States. Since
1989, he has been the director of the Filipino
Kulintang Center in San Francisco, and he was
formerly an artist-in-residence at San Francisco State
University.
Plonsey, 51, is a composer and saxophonist who has
collaborated with Bang on a Can, Anthony Braxton,
Tom Waits and others. He teaches math at Berkeley
High School.
