Session Title: Unpacking Your Suitcase
Description
This session is designed for the course participants (CPs) to talk about their expectations,
concerns, problems, ideas, suggestion, expertise, knowledge and skills, experience and/or
achievements pertaining to the teaching of phonics and present it on poster sheet.

6. Instruct the participants to describe themselves to their friend
name, workplace, number of years of teaching experience,
interest and favourite place.
Trainer Notes Session 2
1. Welcome everyone to the LINUS 2.0 LBI. Lets begin the training
with getting to know each other.
2. Lets get into two big groups of even numbers (if possible). Group
1 and 2.
3. Group 1 please make a circle and face out.
4. Then, Group 2 form make a circle around Group 1 and face them
(as illustrated below):

5. Now you have to describe yourself to your friend (the one you are
facing) - your name, workplace, years of experience, interest and
favourite place.
6. When you hear me say START, Group 2 has to move to the right
and meet a new partner.
7. Then, describe yourself to your new partner.
8. This will go on until everyone has met each other.
9. Ask participants how they would use this activity in the
classroom.
**Trainer can demonstrate with a small group if participants are unsure
how this activity works.
Activity 2
Unpacking My Suitcase
Procedure
1. Explain the purpose of Unpacking My Suitcase.

Sharing experiences and concerns
Set the pace for training (help them to be comfortable- not jump
straight into the content)
Platform for trainer to gauge CPs understanding of course
content.
2. Organize the course participants (CPs) into groups.
3. Distribute Tasksheet 1 and get the CPs to read silently.

4. Ensure CPs understand the task before getting them to draw the
suitcase. The CPs can design their suitcase.
5. Allocate five minutes for the CPs to do.
6. At the end of the stipulated time, get the CPs to share in pairs.
7. After two minutes, ask the CPs to share their suitcase in their groups.
8. Group members are to come to a consensus and create a suitcase
that represents their groups discussion.
9. Trainer walks around and listen to common concerns, etc.
10. Invite the CPs to put up their posters on the wall.
11. Explain the purpose of the gallery walk and distribute post it.
12. Invite one group to share their posters.
13. Trainer addresses as many concerns as possible e.g. issues related
teaching of phonics
14. Tie up the activity by informing the CPs that the trainers will try to
address the concerns where ever possible.

1. Take a sheet of A4 paper and draw a suitcase on it. (It should almost
fill the paper)

3. In the top right corner, write down any concerns or problems you have
brought with you and which are still on your mind (drawing on your
experience).
4. In the bottom left corner, note down any ideas or suggestions you have
brought with you to share with others regarding the module and the
course.
5. In the bottom right corner, note down the expertise, knowledge and
skills, experiences or achievements (in relation to the teaching of
phonics) you can contribute to the course.

6. Now tie a luggage label to the handle and write your name on it.
7. When you have finished, share your suitcase with a partner before you
share in a group.
