From the e-Activity, analyze what has changed over the past several decades and what has

the same in leadership within organizations. Argue a position as to whether or not the meaning of
leadership has changed significantly.
As defined by the text, leadership is, the process of influencing others and the process of facilitating
individual and collective efforts to accomplish shared objectives. (Schermerhorn, J. R., 2012, p. 292).
Over the past several decades leadership has changed in several ways.
First off, there are many women that are now in leadership positions. This would not have been the case
several decades ago as women were not able to hold leadership positions. However, nowadays women
are show great leadership skills, and some even better skills than their male counterparts.
Secondly, the roles of a person with leadership responsibility have expanded. Nowadays, leaders,
managers, and CEOs have a lot of employees working underneath them. They have to delegate
responsibilities so that all the work can get done. The responsibility of delegating tasks is one way that
leadership has evolved. In the past it was just a manager and an employee. Now leadership is about
leading those who lead others.
Even though leadership has changed, it does not mean that everything has changed. Leadership within an
organization is still a role that is respected. Leadership roles still are highly desired and well
compensated. Those in leadership roles have to deal with day to day issues as well as overall
organizational issues. This has not changed.
Personally, I do not believe that the meaning of leadership has changed significantly. Leadership is still
about leading people and keeping the organization on track. The role of a leader within an organization
has expanded and there are many more leadership roles within an organization now, but I think that
overall the meaning of leadership has not changed significantly. The only major change that has
occurred is that women and minorities now hold many high leadership roles. This is a major and great
change, but the meaning of leadership, I believe, has not changed drastically.
From the e-Activity, examine the contingency thinking approach and determine whether it is
necessary to the study of successful leadership. Support your reasoning.
Contingency thinking is the way to meet the needs of different management situations (Schermerhorn,
J. R., 2012, p. 6). I believe that contingency thinking is very necessary to the study of successful
leadership. Leadership is all about leading people in an organization. Within that organization there are
many different people and situations that one has to deal with. Having a leader that is constantly review
the needs of the different situations allows for them to be an effective leader and find ways to improve
processes. Leadership is an ever changing role depending on new innovations, public view, and changing
management practices. Contingency thinking allows leaders to meet the needs of the various
management situations.
