obituary
Danny Williams, 62
Danny Williams, a well-known comedian and AIDS activist who entertained
for more than 20 years on RSVP Cruises, died Nov. 4 at a Maryland hospital
according to his husband, Brian Moser. Williams was 62 and succumbed to a
staph infection though he had been struggling with health problems since 2012
when he went on disability.
Having lived many years in San Francisco, Williams, a hospital manager at UCSF
Medical Center, started doing stand-up comedy in 1982 on his 30th birthday
when he participated in an open mic event. For a time, he continued his day job
and visited AIDS patients in the hospital while also participating in hundreds of
charity fundraisers all over the country, Moser said. In 1986, he quit hospital
work to focus on comedy full time.
In 1989, he started working for RSVP Cruises, known for its gay clientele. He
entertained on board hosting costume parties, pool parties and gay spoofs of
shows like The Dating Game and Newlywed Game.
Williams was born in New Orleans on Oct. 23, 1952 and spent part of his early
years in Phoenix where his family relocated. He moved to San Francisco at age 18,
Moser said. His religious parents sent him to a mental institution at 17 to try to
cure him of being gay, an ordeal he later used in a one-man show called 1970.
Williams and Moser met on an RSVP Cruise in 1995. The next year, Moser
moved from Washington to San Francisco to be with Williams. They registered as
domestic partners in 1998 and had additional ceremonies in 2003 and 2008 as
California law allowed. They lived for a time in Palm Springs in 2000 and moved
to the D.C. area in January this year where Williams continued his comedy work
even performing at DAR Constitution Hall in March.
In addition to Moser, Williams is survived by his aunt Catherina Patricia
Williams, and niece, Shannon Hedlund; sister-in-law Lisa Roja and her husband,
Michael Roja; Mosers sisters, Toni Roja and Diona Roja; and many nieces and
nephews and extended family members. Williams is also survived by friends
Tracey Brandon, Tom Harvey, Don Fenwick, Johnny and Jerry Hedges, Bob
Grinchuck, and Reuel Olin.
A memorial service will be held in San Francisco Dec. 7 at 11 a.m. at Beatbox,
314 11th St. A reception will immediately follow at the 440 bar, 440 Castro St.
Donations at the memorial and reception will benet AEF and the Positive
Resource Center, two of Williams favorite charities.

Md. Medicaid to
expand trans coverage
Marylands Medicaid Coverage Policy
Advisory Committee recommended that
Marylands Medicaid coverage be updated
to provide transgender-inclusive health
coverage for all participants in Marylands
Medical Assistance (Medicaid) program.
The program is the primary source of
health insurance coverage for low-income
adults, families and children in the state.
The updated plan will provide coverage
for medically necessary comprehensive
services for gender transition.
This development follows the states
decision in July 2014, as part of a
settlement with FreeState Legal, to
similarly update the health benets
coverage for state employees and their
beneciaries.
Removal of these outdated Medicaid
regulations is particularly important for
low-income transgender Marylanders,
who in many cases have no access to
medically necessary health care other
than through the Medicaid program,
said Jer Welter, managing attorney of
FreeState Legal.

Living in the San Francisco Bay Area
in the late 90s, it was hard not to notice
that gay men between 40 and 60 were
sometimes rare, even missing. Friends
who had been living there less than
10 years earlier told stories: My friend
Billy spoke of attending two memorials a weekend for months on end; Len
remembered wearing full sterile garb
to visit dying friends in the hospital in
1982; and people at my church, gay and
straight, remembered constant care rotas for a changing and diminishing set
of friends and lovers. Len, a retired professor, told me that caring for his ailing
mother in the late 1970s kept him home
and out of the bars: Thats probably
what kept me alive.
As a social scientist, I think I have a
pretty good understanding of the probabilities behind many everyday actions
and circumstances. It is sobering to realize that only a matter of years may separate one from the near-certainty of the
disease. Even now, I accept as normal that
some of my friends have not escaped the
laws of probabilities and plagues. Friends
of mine speak of a time in their lives when
they could count more friends and lovers
who were dead than alive.
Each Dec. 1 is World AIDS Day, and we
generally dont much mark the day here
in the United States. For many folks, this
titanic killer has become a mere chronic
disease, thanks to the antiretroviral cocktail therapies available to us. As a result,
gay men, for example, have been able to
turn their social and political eorts toward a variety of other issues: marriage,
employment protection, open military
service.
We are hardly out of the woods,
even in the United States. Recent CDC
reports indicate that unprotected anal
sex among gay men in America has
increased 20 percent since 2005. The
same trend has occurred in several other Western countries. While amazing
progress has occurred in sub-Saharan
Africa, HIV infections and AIDS deaths
are on the rise in East Asia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and the Middle
East and North Africa.
Even while MSM are the most-aected
group in the United States and other developed countries, the most common
type of HIV-infected person in the world
today is a young woman of African descent. The epidemic varies greatly and
remains consistent in its pervasive burrowing into those at the margins of our
cultures: sexual minorities, drug users,
women, sex workers and black people.
UNAIDS will tout good news this Dec.

COMMUNIKATE
In solidarity with my friends and family in South Bualo I have been sheltering
at home during the snowstorm. Mind you
not a lick of snow has fallen in Manhattan.
Truth be told, and it so rarely is, freshly
miserable from the mid-term election avalanche, I was avoiding the Desolation of
Smug post-election analysis by catching
up on my TV dame shows.
Cold comfort. I had settled down for a
long winters watch: Homeland, Nash-
ville, The Good Wife and the Scandalridden stories of a place called ShondraLand. Correct pillow placement, chip to
salsa ratio and correct clicker. And along
came the winter season nales like the
annoying coital interrupt us of a knock on
the door from housekeeping. How long
has this hiatal thing been going on?
When I was coming up, the big three
networks, actually the only three networks, would take a break for a few weeks
for holiday specials. Suddenly Bonanza
was gone and we were forced to behave
through the made-for-TV Menotti opera,
Amahl and the Night Visitors. Or sing along
with the blindingly white King Family trilling Christmas standards, perched on a
green-garlanded staircase. Sometimes I
could talk the Clinton family parents into
watching Nixon-nosed Bob Hope snark
his way through his USO show. I didnt get
him, but my brothers and I did enjoy the
scantily clad showgirls. A lot.

WASHINGTON BLADE:Congratulations

part of the routine are you going to miss

JASON COLLINS: Thats easy. I am
going to miss the afternoon nap. NBA
games usually start around 7 or 7:30 p.m.
and most players usually take a nap on
game day. A typical game day starts with
a shootaround for two hours starting
at 9:30 a.m. You get back to the hotel

players take a nap for two hours. My

the habit of afternoon naps even though
hes not playing. Its part of the routine.

COLLINS:I have been oered a position
with NBA Cares as an ambassador.
Its a very broad job description but I
will be working to support current and
former NBA players. They have dierent
community service outreach programs
that I will be participating in and I will
also be encouraging kids and adults
to maintain a healthy active lifestyle.
Preferably they would accomplish that by
playing basketball.

as a great teammate. Does it make you
smile to know that based on your lifetime
