Reading response to Framework for Success
1. Where did you do this reading? (in your room? the library? etc.) What time of the day?
What about the time and place helped or hindered your reading experience?
I conducted my reading in my living room. When I say my living room, I am referring to
the one in my house in Wilmington. The quiet environment allowed me to hear myself
think and really process what I was reading. I read this piece just before lunch time,
which would have been perfect under normal circumstances. However, because I had just
finished driving the four hours it takes to get home, it was a bit more difficult than usual
to focus on the task at hand. This was exacerbated by the bright light reflecting off of my
computer screen from the window beside me.
2. How did you engage with the text? For example, did you underline, highlight, annotate,
take notes, look up words, research anything you read about, just read? What worked
well and what didnt? It may be helpful here to indicate what format your text was in
paper copy or electronic and think about how the mode of a text influences how you read.
Ive already alluded to the challenge I faced with the electronic format of the text in this
particular instance. However, I did not want to waste paper, and so accepted that I would
have to squint to read the manuscript. I looked into the CWPA Outcomes Statement
mentioned as the basis for the text. The Experiences with Writing, Reading, and Critical
Analysis section of Framework for Success correlates almost exactly with the
Outcomes Statement. Reading the Outcomes Statement before Framework for Success
assisted me in understanding the proposed advice for instructors given in the latter piece.
3. Pick three of the habits of mind listed below. Write about how you feel you practice them
in your life already.

Curiosity Curiosity is one of the main reasons I love learning. I constantly feel the
need to know more, but it is not just about acquiring more knowledge. I also desire
understanding and wisdom. I want to understand concepts, the correlation between
different theories or entities, how processes work, and why facts are relevant. My
dad wants me to know how to take care of my car so that I will stay safe and have
made a valuable investment. When he was showing me where and how to check the
fluids in my car, I also wanted to know why my car needed these fluids to run
efficiently and why I had to check them. I gained further understanding by making
connections between the answers my dad gave to these questions and concepts I had
been learning about in physics and chemistry. That is just one relevant, everyday

Engagement I feel as though my engagement in learning is closely tied to my

curiosity. The source of my curiosity is often due to my engagement with the topic. I
feel invested in my learning because I am seeking relevancy and understanding. I
believe this helps me become a more informed and capable person. I learn using a
variety of styles and resources. I learn best by tactile methods, meaning by actually
involving myself in the process. With math it is not enough for me to see the
instructor complete a problem step-by-step; I have to do it myself. This works best if
I discover the process myself.
Responsibility I see learning as my own responsibility, and am careful not to
disturb the learning of others. This is why when I had a teacher who was unable to
meet the needs of her chemistry class, I taught myself the material and then
explained the concepts to anyone who wanted help. A sense of responsibility is also
one of the reasons I am careful to think before I speak. I do not want to express my
thoughts without first considering how this will be perceived by others. I would not
want to be offensive or callous to anothers situation or beliefs.

4. Were going to develop a writing/composing assignment around this framework, so please

brainstorm below about what this assignment might look like. Be as imaginative as you want.
Pull from previous writing/composing work youve done for school writing or life writing that
you felt was helpful in your learning. Once youve written this, please cut and paste it into our
Google Doc on Framework for Success.
We could do an inquiry project based on a very broad blanket topic. Each student would be
responsible for developing their own line of discovery within this broader spectrum. We could
then conduct research, and write about our findings in multiple formats. There should be certain
check points along this journey for class discussion of the information we are finding and our
experiences with inquiry. We should also have peer editing workshops, perhaps through one of
the online forums. Throughout the project, we should be responsible for completing reflections
on how the different writing processes, conventions, and rhetorical movements we are utilizing
influence our intended audiences. In this process, we should make as many connections as
possible within our own findings, between the information we have collected and that which
others in the class have collected, and between our findings and the world around us. We could
also analyze our own sources for bias, perhaps in an annotated bibliography. We should have a
final reflection analyzing our own writing and contemplating any questions our exploration has
