UNSTRUCTURED ABSTRACT ON IRRATIONAL USE OF ANTIBIOTICS

Upper respiratory infections are one of the most common infections with symptoms ranging
from runny nose, sore throat, cough, to breathing difficulty, and lethargy. Related to URTIs one
of the global public health problem in pediatrics is the irrational use of antibiotics, i.e also a
cause of emergence and spread of resistance and no guidelines of The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) are followed. Its survey based research on children having acute
URI, for this we visited different clinics, hospitals, pharmacies and communities. The survey was
completed in 20 days and children under 5 years were included irrespective of gender. In which
145 prescriptions were collected and analyzed by percentage distribution. According to our
survey, we have evaluated that antibiotics are definitely being used irrationally particularly in
children with URTIs (Nasopharyngitis, sinusitis, laryngitis, influenza, rhinitis) which is
corresponding to an international survey that proves that Pakistan is one of those countries
where antibiotics are extensively irrationally using[4,5]our results revealed that in 62.1% cases
antibiotics were prescribed rationally/ irrationally in which Cephalosporins(mostly 3 rd
generation) are majorly prescribed (in 47.7%) then Penicillins (in 36.6%) and in remaining
37.9% symptomatic treatment was considered preferable. Therefore, complications related to
these drugs are commonly experienced by pediatrics[8,9] __ and not only this, resistance from these
drugs are also frequently occurring because of their frequent concomitant use[1,2]. In addition to
no study showed that no complications are occurring by their use or suggest safety of antibiotics
use in children. From the above evaluated results we have concluded that antibiotics majorly
antibacterial are irrationally prescribed in children under 5years for upper respiratory tract
infections rather than giving symptomatic treatments which has to be considered prior as they
have less chances of complications and resistance that usually occurs from antibiotics plus they
are safer to use because of less adverse effect profile if doses and medicinal therapy are properly
maintained.

STRUCTURED ABSTRACT ON IRRATIONAL USE OF ANTIBIOTICS

BACKGROUND:
Upper respiratory infections are one of the most common infections with symptoms ranging
from runny nose, sore throat, cough, to breathing difficulty, and lethargy. Related to URTIs one
of the global public health problem in pediatrics is the irrational use of antibiotics, i.e also a
cause of emergence and spread of resistance and no guidelines of The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) are followed.
METHODOLOGY:
Its survey based research on children having acute URI, for this we visited different clinics,
hospitals, pharmacies and communities. The survey was completed in 20 days and children
under 5 years were included irrespective of gender. In which 145 prescriptions were collected
and analyzed by percentage distribution.
RESULT:
According to our survey, we have evaluated that antibiotics are definitely being used irrationally
particularly in children with URTIs (Nasopharyngitis, sinusitis, laryngitis, influenza, rhinitis)
which is corresponding to an international survey that proves that Pakistan is one of those
countries where antibiotics are extensively irrationally using[4,5]our results revealed that in
62.1% cases antibiotics were prescribed rationally/ irrationally in which Cephalosporins(mostly

these drugs are commonly experienced by pediatrics __ and not only this, resistance from these
drugs are also frequently occurring because of their frequent concomitant use[1,2]. In addition to
no study showed that no complications are occurring by their use or suggest safety of antibiotics
use in children.
CONCLUSION:
From the above evaluated results we have concluded that antibiotics majorly antibacterial are
irrationally prescribed in children under 5years for upper respiratory tract infections rather than
giving symptomatic treatments which has to be considered prior as they have less chances of
complications and resistance that usually occurs from antibiotics plus they are safer to use
because of less adverse effect profile if doses and medicinal therapy are properly maintained.
