Digestive System
Grade 10 Living Environment

NYSED Core Curriculum Standard:

1.2b Humans are complex organisms. They require multiple systems for digestion, respiration,
reproduction, circulation, excretion, movement, coordination, and immunity. The systems
interact to perform the life functions.
Performance Indicator
1.2
Describe and explain the structures and functions of the human body at different
organizational levels (e.g., systems, tissues, cells, organelles).
ISTE Learning Standard
Standard 6. Technology operations and concepts:
Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations.
a. Understand and use technology systems
b. Select and use applications effectively

Student Learning Objectives

*Students will know the organs involved in the digestive system.
*Students will comprehend the path that food travels as it moves through the digestive
system.

Lesson:
Agenda
*Do Now-Food
*Journal Reflection
*Journal sharing
*Digestion Mini-Lesson
*BioDigital Human
*Love Your Gut Game
1)Introduce the Learning Activity:
a) Do Now-Food-> The teacher will unwind the class before instruction with 5 minutes to
eat food. If students have food of their own, they are welcome to partake in that. The teacher will
provide fruits and vegetables for students who do not have food but may want a snack.
b) Students will be asked to write about what they know about the digestion of food in
their journals. This can be in whatever form they would prefer (text, visual, etc.) while they eat
their food.
c) After five minutes, students will be asked to stop writing. The teacher will ask for three
students to share their entries. The teacher will ask that during this time, students write one thing
they found interesting about one of the interpretations in their journal entry. The teacher will ask
two students to repeat the directions (CFU-directions).
d) Following the journal sharing. The teacher will then review the objectives of the lesson
to come. Students will be asked to keep their journal entries in mind, as they explore the path that
the food they just enjoyed is now travelling.
e) The students will be asked to go to the teachers website, where they will find the
resources needed for the next portion of the lesson. Students will be asked to open the BioDigital
Human account, where they will then create an account.

2) Provide Information
a) The teacher will load the PowerPoint onto the computer and screen, to provide text
information during the lesson.

b) The teacher will review the basics of the program; moving, zooming in and out,
settings, toggling presence of structures and systems.
c) The teacher will ask students to prepare their Biodigital human for the lesson on the
digestive system; students will ask to turn off all systems but the digestive system, and to extend
the folders within original category file.
d) The teacher will move through the organs involved in the digestive process along with
basic key facts about them. Students will take notes, and isolate the organs being discussed.
e) If the program will not load or technology is unavailable, students will be asked to
refer to their textbook diagrams during the lesson.
3) Provide Practice
a) Following the lesson, the students will explore additional information about the
digestive system and the organs within. When they feel they are ready, they are to select the quiz
option from the top menu. The students will take a 20 question quiz. Students are required to
achieve a grade of 80% or higher. Students will print screen-copy the image showing their results
and will paste this image into an individual word document.
b) Students who finish their quizzes will return to the Teacher website, where they will
find the next activity-game at the Loveyourgut website. Students will be asked to pair together
and play this game to observe some of the functions and processes that occur within various parts
of the digestive system. Students that score above 360 may email the teacher a copy of the screen
stating their score for bonus points (noting who they collaborated with).

4) Provide Knowledge of Results

a) During these activities, the teacher will be moving around the room, assisting students
if needed, while gauging their understanding of the material. The teacher will provide verbal
feedback during this time.
b) The teacher will take down notes on the misconceptions that students may have had,
along with feedback that the teacher would like to share with them in response. This may be
done on a piece of paper, notepad or tablet. This feedback will be returned to the students on the
individual copies of the emailed results pictures (to avoid disclosure of information).
5) Review the activity
a) Students will be given an Exit Slip, questioning them about the objectives. This will
serve to review the information covered in the activity, as well as ask them to include one fact
they learned from each of the activities.

6) Method of Assessment
a) BioDigital Human Quiz
1) Students will take this quiz individually to assess how well they can identify
the structures within the digestive system. This will function as a formative assessment and,
along with observations made during the lesson by the teacher, serve as a way for the teacher to
gauge the students knowledge of the organs involved in the process (Objective 1). Students will
be required to obtain a score of 80% in order for a completion grade, and then submit the results
of their quizzes via e-mail.
b) Exit Slip
1) Students will complete this exit slip following the lesson. This will serve as a
formative assessment, where the students comprehension of the pathway of digestion will be
assessed. Students will be asked four questions (two pertaining to the objectives, and two
pertaining to the activities) that will gauge the students understanding of the objectives and the
activities performed. This will be graded out of 5 points (one point per correct question and one
point for their name on the sheet).
