Job Summary: Is responsible for the supervision and assurance of the quality, safety and appropriateness of the
medical and technical care provided to patients in this facility. Ensures provision of Dialysis Services that reflects the
organizations philosophy and standards. Adheres to all state, federal, accrediting organization regulations and other
regulatory guidelines as applicable. Is responsible for leadership in the Dialysis Services Facility's quality
improvement activities and patient safety initiatives.

Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:


Directs and coordinates medical care for Dialysis Services.

Ensures that there is a written plan of organization, responsibilities and function for every
category of staff.

Participates in administrative decision making, establishes policies, procedures and


guidelines designed to ensure the provision of adequate, comprehensive care.

Communicates with patients attending physicians and other healthcare providers


regarding the Dialysis Services policies, procedures and standards.

In conjunction with the administration, develops and implements rules, regulations and
policies that govern the nephrologists who admit patients to Dialysis Services.

Monitors the clinical practice of the nephrologists; may intervene as needed on the
patients behalf.

Provides continuous medical coverage for patient care needs, including adequate
alternative physician coverage when the patients physician is not personally available.

Assists in developing procedures for the emergency treatment of patients.

Assists with the development of policies and procedures for the admission, transfer or
discharge of patients to other facilities when necessary.

Participates in patient comprehensive care planning.

Monitors and reviews each involuntary patient discharge to ensure that the facility
interdisciplinary team follows the discharge and transfer policies.

Is responsible for ensuring that facility staff members receive the appropriate education
and training to competently perform their job responsibilities.

Participates in the development and implementation of educational programs for nursing


and other healthcare professionals of Dialysis Services.

Helps to ensure a safe and sanitary environment for patients and staff through review and
evaluation of incident reports and identification of hazards to health and safety. Makes
relevant recommendations to Administration.

safety, infection preventions and control, hazardous materials and waste, etc.

Ensures all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and
reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

Ensures a culture of safety and quality.

Is a patient advocate, ensuring the patients medical and psychosocial needs are met.

Develops, revises and implements policies and procedures for patient care, infection
prevention and control, performance improvement and patient rights.

Ensures that Dialysis Services maintains accreditation, licensing and quality patient care
through establishment of performance improvement monitoring programs and standards.

Monitors and evaluates the quality and appropriateness of medical services as an integral
part of the overall performance improvement program.

Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.

Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and their families.

Demonstrates extensive knowledge of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

Demonstrates knowledge of current pain management protocols.

Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directives to and staff and


encourages interactive meetings and discussions.

Presents to the Governing Body and/or its committees, periodic reports reflecting medical
services of the Dialysis Services and such special reports as may be required by the
Governing Body.

Develops educational classes for healthcare professionals regarding Dialysis Services.

Serves as liaison between the medical staff and administration.

Encourages facility participation in community activities such as the National Kidney


Foundation and ESRD Networks.

Provides explicit criteria for peer review and performance evaluation.

Identifies the need for medical research.

Participates in multidisciplinary team meetings.

Works closely with the Nurse Manager and NCOIC to facilitate patient care,
administration, staff development, education, inspections and research.

Regulatory Requirements:

Doctor of medicine or osteopathy.

Currently licensed to practice medicine in the State of __________________.

Board eligible or certified in nephrology by a professional board and has at least 12 months experience in the

Drug Enforcement Administration Registration.

Presentation of Certificate of Insurance.

Administrative experience preferred.
