What is the target audience for Miranda? Give three clear reasons for this.
The target audience for Miranda is young adults and adults (15+) because it contains jokes
that under 15s will not understand and maybe does contain sexual jokes and swearing in the
programme as well so that is why it is better suited for young adults and adults because they
are more suitable for these type of jokes.
Who are the cast?
Miranda Hart- Miranda (An ungainly, socially awkward thirty-something woman who
frequently finds herself in bizarre situations. She is something of a misfit relative to her
upper-middle class, privately educated background, opting to invest an inheritance from her
uncle in a joke shop rather than pursuing a more "respectable" career, and balking at the
supposedly suitable men her mother and friends try to set her up with).
Tom Ellis- Gary Preston (A handsome, friendly chef; an old university friend of Miranda's.
Although there has always been an undercurrent of attraction between them, neither has
pursued it until he begins working at the restaurant next to the joke shop. Despite often
being confused by Miranda's behaviour, Gary generally finds her kind, open nature
endearing. He is one of the few people to accept Miranda by who she really is).
Sarah Hadland- Stevie Sutton ( Mirandas childhood friend and the assistant manager of
Mirandas shop)
Patricia Hodge- Penny (Miranda's middle-class mother, a "lady who lunches", who likes to
impress her friends and fellow W.I. members. Her main mission in life is to find Miranda a
man and a better job. She despairs at Miranda's decision to run a joke shop, and her
tendency to reject suitable (or at least available) men. Penny's catchphrase, "Such fun!" is
normally used to describe an activity or event where she believes Miranda may find a
husband. Penny tends to ignore Miranda's obvious disinterest or discomfort. Although often
embarrassed by her daughter and prepared to humiliate her (to the point of holding up a
placard offering to pay someone to marry Miranda). Penny's actions are borne out of
genuine love and concern, and on the rare occasions where Miranda is doing well she shows
her love by cheering "Go Miranda").
Sally Phillips-Tilly (An old school friend of Miranda's who, in contrast to her, fits right in with
their private school background, often showing more in common with Penny than Miranda
does. She will often address Miranda by her school nickname, "Queen Kong" (due to

Miranda's stature), despite Miranda's obvious repeated and vocal distaste for it, but her
criticisms and attempts to help Miranda are generally well-intentioned).
James Holmes- Clive Evans (The camp, vicious-tongued owner of the restaurant where Gary
works. Whenever he attempts to help Miranda and Gary get together he is usually more of a
hindrance than help, such as accidentally revealing Gary has a secret wife. He is absent from
the third series having sold the restaurant to Gary off-screen).
Bo Poraj- Michael Jackford (Miranda's new boyfriend who works as a television reporter and
loves Miranda for the real her).
Naomi Bentley- Rose (Gary's new girlfriend. When Rose can't accept his past affections for
Miranda, Gary breaks up with her. She is last seen entering Gary's restaurant for its reopening, but when Miranda confesses her true feelings for Gary during an argument, Rose
immediately walks out).
How do they appeal to the target audience?
They appeal to the audience as funny and sarcastic especially if you have seen their side of
work in other programmes or sitcoms, so the audience does have an idea of what their
character would be like especially the main character Miranda. When the audience see
these characters/actors/actresses, they feel more entertained because they have watched
them in other things so the audience would be able to understand the jokes they come out
immediately and what reaction would be made towards the audience watching.
What shows have the main cast members appeared in before?
Miranda- Call the Midwifes, Not Going Out, The Big Fat Quiz Of The Year, My, what I Call Live
Show.
Tom Ellis The Fades, Rush, Miss Conception, High heels and low lives
Sarah Hadland- Fireman Sam, Quantum of Solace, Confetti, Now is good.
Patricia Hodge- Rumpole of the bailey
Sally Phillips- Bridget Joness Diary, Im Alan Partridge
What time is Miranda first broadcast?
Miranda is broadcasted first at 8.30pm on Mondays.
Why do you think it is broadcast at such a time?
It is broadcasted at this time because it contains adult content which young children
shouldnt stay up to watch and the programme is too complex for under 15s to understand
the jokes and hearing swearing.
When is Miranda repeated?
On Sunday 10.00pm
What channels is it repeated on?
BBC Two

What is it about the setting of the show that appeals to the target audience?
The setting of the show is based on Mirandas life so you will move to each scene by what
she goes and do and shows the programme as a reality show in which to make the audience
think that it is really happening and make jokes about everyday life.
