MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR: MALCOLM J

The Weinland Park Story Book is being published
this month, and among the drawings in it will
be those of our neighbor Malcolm J. A familiar
face in the community, Malcolm has won awards,
been commissioned to illustrate numerous publications, and had gallery shows all over the city.
Opening soon will be an exhibition at the Ohio
Historical Society for which he will illustrate
changes over time to buildings, clothing, and
transportation in neighborhoods throughout our
city. The work on display will include an
installation of three murals that hell make with
WPs R.I.S.E Boys and Girls Club, which are
targeted for later permanent installation in WP.
The upcoming WP Calendar project will also
include Malcolms work alongside that of a host
of other artists from the neighborhood.
Cleveland born and raised, Malcolm was home-

less and worn down by life when he moved to

Columbus in 2005. Here he found the supportive
services to help him reconstruct his confidence
and prove he could do things his own way after a
troubled past of crime and drugs. His belief in his
artistic abilityand encouragement from sources
both likely and unlikelykept him going.
Now he works to give other talented individuals
the same opportunity, especially youth and exoffenders.
I know where I came from and where Ive gone,
he says. We all have a duty to minister to each
other. Life is full of highs and lows, suffering we
have to meet and accept, as part of this short
journey were on.

THE RAIN WOULDNT QUIT, BUT NEITHER WOULD WE

Over 200 people participated in our fourth annual
community cleanup, Roots and Roofs, on May 10.
We went through some 625 bags of mulch and 2,600 plants
and bulbs, much of which was sold at a deep discount to our
neighbors. Community
Properties of Ohio (CPO) also worked hard on their
buildings, including filling beautiful, self-watering window
boxes with flowers.
Since 2010, our efforts have resulted in over 10,000 perennials and bulbs being planted throughout WP. Thanks to all who
have pitched in!

WHAT DID WE SAY?

SAFETY SURVEY RESULTS
The civic associations Safety and Mobility Committee, in collaboration with the Neighborhood Options
for Youth initiative, recently conducted a survey of 60 of
our neighbors on the subject of safety in WP.
Fortunately, most respondents felt that levels of safety have gotten better in the past two years and that,
for the most part, our police officers can be trusted.
Half of those filling out the survey said they had been
victims of a crime in 2013. Vandalism and burglary were
the most common crimes reported, and, thankfully,
over 80% of the crimes were reported to the police, an
important step in keeping our community safe.

Programs for our youth ages 1224 were rated as the

most essential public safety activity. Closer monitoring
of vacant properties came in second, with block clubs
and tougher housing code enforcement tied for third.

weinlandparkcivic.org.

CONGRATULATIONS,
NEIGHBORS!

Our outgoing treasurer, Omar Qureshi, earned his

law degree from Ohio State University in May.

Our outgoing president, Joyce Hughes, was recently honored by Eileen Paley at City Council for
her years of dedication to WP. In her honor, a grant
of $2,500 was made to the civic association by the
Columbus Foundation.

Honorary resident Susan Colbert was recently

awarded OSUs Distinguished Staff Award.

GOOD THINGS ARE

COMING!

$14,100 from the Joseph A. Jeffrey Endowment of the

Columbus Foundation will be turned into 70 trees
at various CPO buildings this year with some help
from the Neighborhood Design Center.

Long-anticipated construction is progressing on two

market-rate housing developments, Grant Park
(new single family homes starting at Grant and Sixth
Avenues) and Grant Commons (renovated apartments in the historic buildings along East Eleventh
Avenue).
