IT TAKES FAMILIES TO MAKE A COMMUNITY; IT TAKES THE COMMUNITY TO RAISE OUR CHILDREN;
IT TAKES ALL OF US WORKING TOGETHER FOR THE GOOD OF OUR COMMUNITY.

TALK IS GOOD BUT WHAT'S NEXT?!

2012 was a busy year for us in Weinland Park. We witnessed the

Housing Committee's diligent work on the designs for the Habitat
and NSP homes. We watched the wall-raisings and building of the
Habitat homes. And the completion of the infrastructure work on
Grant Avenue, which lead to the NSP homes there, as well as on
North Sixth Street, and Fifth Street. We also saw the rehabbing of
vacant homes on Summit Street, Hamlet, North Fourth, North
Fifth, and Sixth streets. There was the demolition of another piece
of our history: the 3M building on North Fourth Street, which
marked the start of the planning grant awarded to us by MORPC.
There was improvement in the appearance of our neighborhood
afforded by the External Home Repair program for those who own
their homes. And there was the boarding-up of the 11th Avenue
row apartments, followed by the good news that the developers had
received the award they needed to undertake work on those
structures.

Spread the word. All neighborhood residents are encouraged to

attend the kick-off of Weinland Park's first Community Dialogue
on February 12, 2013. The evening begins at 6:00 pm, in the gym at
the Weinland Park Elementary School, 211 East Seventh Avenue.
An International Dinner will be served featuring dishes from the
different cultures represented in our area. Afterwards, the
nationally-renowned
organization, Everyday
Democracy, will hold sample
dialogue circles to show
residents how we move from
talk to action in building a
better community! We can
all play a part in making
Weinland Park the best
neighborhood in Columbus!
Everyone is welcome. Childcare will be available during the event.
Give us a call at (614)294-5476 ext. 126 to let us know you are
coming! Also, those interested in helping with the food preparation
should call (614)653-3112.

Our Civic continues to make progress through the tireless efforts of

the committees and by teaming up with the Collaborative. The
neighborhood has welcomed many new residents. The Moms 2 B
program has helped deliver more healthy babies. Recent plans for a
Community Dialogue will soon come to fruition. And, at the end
of the year, our Collaborative joined with the Annie E. Casey
Foundation to move forward work with families who have children
from age infant to 10 years.
As we look ahead in 2013, I hope that you will choose to get
involved and help make our neighborhood the place where
everyone wants to be. There's plenty more to do! Whether it's the
Mobility & Safety, Housing, Communication, Development, or
Health & Wellness committee, Moms 2 B, MORPC planning, the
Collaborative/Annie E. Casey, or the rehab of the 11th Ave row
apartments.

Capital University 22nd Annual Dr. Martin

Luther King, Jr. Day of Learning Monday,
Jan. 21, 2013
Every January, the Capital University community celebrates the life
and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the
annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Learning. This year marks the
22nd year of our commitment. Although the events are coordinated
by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the event belongs to the entire
campus. Students, staff and faculty are instrumental to the success of
the day's events. On this day, we open our campus to the wider
community of Central Ohio . Citizens of Central Ohio delight in an
opportunity to be challenged by the keynote speaker, engage in
meaningful dialogue with students, staff and faculty during the
workshops, and enjoy the hospitality of our campus.
On Monday, January 21, 2013 we will commemorate the life and
legacy of Dr. King through service and learning. Our theme,
DREAM. LIVE. CHANGE captures our commitment to act, serve
and engage to build Dr. King's commitment to his dream.
The day will commence at 8 am with a Community Gathering in
Harry C. Moores, Campus Center; and, the Day of Learning
convocation program will follow in Mees Hall. Rev. Jamal -Harrison
Bryant, Founder of Empowerment Temple has been selected to give
the Gay S. Steele Keynote Address.
Following convocation all are welcome to participate in a series of
workshops to discuss a wide range of workshops that speak to the
relevance of Dr. King's work in the 21st century.
