From the
Festival Director's Desk
Since 1952, the vision and dream of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) has been to curate and
showcase the most thought provoking and exceptional films from the world over. It was a brave
initiative for a newly independent country to begin the culture of a film festival and celebrate the art
form of cinema.
The 45th edition of IFFI, one of Asia's oldest film festivals, has arrived, and I welcome you all to this
colossal festival where the vision and dream still remains the same.
More than 70 countries are participating in the festival this year. For 11 days, Goa will be the film
centre of the universe where we will witness directors, cinematographers, actors, scriptwriters and
other key technicians who work day in day out to create the magic of cinema getting their due
spotlight.
For the last 10 years, IFFI discovered the added charm of dazzling Goa. The breathtaking beaches,
the Arabian Sea, and the Portuguese touch have just made the movie watching experience for any
film lover very majestic. From this edition onwards, Goa will be the eternal home, eternal residence
and eternal land for IFFI. I am positive that both will add to each other's splendour.
IFFI is not only presenting a bouquet of acclaimed and award-winning films but it is also celebrating
the excellent cinemas from yesteryears by organizing retrospectives of three iconic filmmakers from
Iran, South Korea and Poland.
Asia and India's close neighbours are part of the country's greater vision. Therefore, IFFI has
initiated another section exclusively for the South Asian region, showcasing one outstanding film
from each of the eight SAARC nations.
With the aim of bringing cinema to film lovers, we have designed this edition such that we have
something in the kitty for everyone. With master classes at IFFI, the upcoming generation of
filmmakers can learn the fundamentals of making a film. Both the Documentary and Animation
Sections have something new, and present the most innovative films of the year.
This year we are putting the spotlight on China. The most ambitious Chinese Cinema is available for
this year's edition. Though China is our country focus, we have managed to pull in films from every
corner of the world, even countries where hardly any films are made.
Alongside the prominent International Cinema, IFFI is also showcasing the best of the best of Indian
Cinema, which completed a century two years ago. And in continuation of that, we are celebrating
Dance in Indian Cinema in this edition. The festival is also not missing this opportunity to do a
retrospective of the legendary Indian poet, lyricist and filmmaker, Gulzar.
Times are flying ahead. Films are being made and distributed digitally. We witnessed the outraging
number of submissions this year. It almost seems like everyone wants to make a film. But the
fundamentals of the art of storytelling remain the same. It is one of the biggest achievements of our
festival to constantly present films which holds command over the narrative, over the art of
storytelling in new and innovative style.
The festival is not complete without thanking the masters of world cinema, filmmakers who devoted
their lifetime in carving out the greatest films of all time. IFFI this year is proud to do a retrospective
of restored films of Charlie Chaplin and Francois Truffaut. This is our way of saluting the masters.
We are five years away from our golden jubilee. We have come a long way in the last many decades.
Our constant endeavour will always be to present the biggest and the best eleven-day carnival of
cinema on this planet. That moment of the year when you drink, sleep, eat, talk, learn, live and enjoy
nothing but great cinema. We have devoted all our energies in putting up this great show. We leave it
to you now to take the most from it. We hope we can satisfy your great taste and love for films. Let the
curtains rise!!

follows his protagonists through their lives for a while, exploring their desires and dreams, but also sketching the reality of life in
modern day China. The sensitive performances and experimental editing of this film opens our senses to the emotional world of

Difret
Synopsis: Three hours outside of Addis Ababa, a bright 14-year-old girl is on her way home from school when men on horses
swoop in and kidnap her. The brave Hirut grabs a rifle and tries to escape, but ends up shooting her would-be husband. In her
village, the practice of abduction into marriage is common and one of Ethiopia's oldest traditions. Meaza Ashenafi, an
empowered and tenacious young lawyer, arrives from the city to represent Hirut and argue that she acted in self-defence. Meaza
boldly embarks on a collision course between enforcing civil authority and abiding by customary law, risking the ongoing work
of her women's legal-aid practice to save Hirut's life. Beneath the layer of polite social customs, an aggressively rooted patriarchy
perpetuates inhospitable conditions for women in this engrossing and significant film, based on a real-life story.

JAN TROELL
Jan Troell is one of the most important Scandinavian filmmakers. The Swedish director is famous
for his understated rhythms and for writing, directing, editing, and shooting his own films. A former
schoolteacher, Troell made short films, then worked as a cameraman for Bo Widerberg before
making his feature debut with Here's Your Life (1966). After Who Saw Him Die? (1968), he made
The Emigrants (1971), which earned Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay,
and its sequel, The New Land (1972), which together presented a sweeping account of Swedish
immigrants coming to America in the 1840s. The films were hailed collectively as the Swedish
equivalent of Gone With the Wind and were notable for Troell's direct and humane treatment of his
characters' plight. After a couple of American film assignments, Troell returned to Scandinavia
with The Flight of the Eagle (1982), also a return to Swedish history with A Frozen Dream. Since
then, Troell has made Sagolandet (1986), Il Capitano (1991), which won the Silver Bear in Berlin in
1992), As White as in Snow (2001), and the best example of a true Scandinavian co-production
becoming a hit in all its local territories, the acclaimed Hamsun (1996).

Farida Pacha
Synopsis: The desert extends endlessly - flat, grey, relentless. There is not a tree or blade of grass or rock. But there is one thing in
abundance: salt. Salt is everywhere, lying just beneath the cracked, baked surface of the earth. This is the little Rann of Kutch,
5000 sq km of saline desert in India. And for eight months of the year, Chhanabhai and his family live here without water,
electricity or provisions - tirelessly extracting salt from this desolate landscape. Under the blinding glare of the sun, they work on

Krzysztof Kieslowski

RETROSPECTIVE
Krzysztof Kieslowski (1941-1996) indisputably ranks among the world's most influential film directors. He passed
away 18 years ago at the age of 54, leaving behind a small but impressive body of work that has never ceased to
generate excitement since.
It took Kieslowski three attempts to make it to the prestigious Lodz Film School, which also produced two other
Polish greats Andrzej Wajda and Roman Polanski.
He graduated from the school in 1968 after a four-year stint and quickly established himself in the forefront of his
country's cinema.
He started out with documentary films that brought him into conflict with political authorities of the day. He switched
to fictional features in 1975 with Personel, made for television. The film fetched him a prize at the Mannheim Film
Festival.
Kieslowski's cinema of moral anxiety, a movement that included the works of Wajda and Agnieszka Holland,
among others, marked him out as a director endowed with deep humanism and a piercing insight into and empathy for
the travails of common people negotiating systemic oppression.
Camera Buff (1979), Blind Chance (1981), No End (1984) and The Double Life of Veronique (1990) were among the
feature films he made in a career that he himself rung the curtains down on when he was only in his early 50s.
Kieslowski's worldwide fame rests on Decalog, a series of ten made-for-television films loosely inspired by the Ten
Commandments, and the Three Colours series, a trilogy that explore the three founding principles of France liberty,
equality and fraternity.

Synopsis: The plot couldn't be simpler or its attack on capital punishment (and the act of killing in general) more direct - a
senseless, violent, almost botched murder is followed by a cold, calculated, flawlessly performed execution (both killings shown
in the most graphic detail imaginable), while the murderer's idealistic young defence lawyer ends up as an unwilling accessory to
the judicial murder of his client.
Synopsis: The first part of Kieslowski's trilogy on France's national motto: Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. 'Blue' is the story of
Julie who loses her husband, an acclaimed composer and her young daughter in a car accident. The film's theme of liberty is
manifested in Julie's attempt to start life anew, free of personal commitments, belongings, grief or love. She intends to numb
herself by withdrawing from the world and living completely independently, anonymously and in solitude in the Parisian
metropolis. Despite her intentions, people from her former and present life intrude with their own needs. However, the reality
created by the people who need and care about her, a surprising discovery and the music around which the film revolves heal Julie

Mohsen Makhmalbaf

RETROSPECTIVE
Mohsen Makhmalbaf was born in 1957 in southern Tehran. While still an adolescent, he dropped out of school
and joined the clandestine fight against the Shah's regime. He was arrested when only 17, and was serving a fiveyear sentence when the 1979 Revolution brought an Islamic regime to power.
The revolution that freed him from prison also unleashed his creative energies. He turned to writing novels and
stage plays, and in 1982 made his first film, Nasouh Repentance. This was the first in a trilogy that provided
Makhmalbaf with his basic film training.
The Peddler (1987) brought Makhmalbaf international attention. The Cyclist (1989) and Marriage of the Blessed
(1990) consolidated his reputation. Makhmalbaf became a controversial figure when the two films he made in
1991, A Time of Love and The Nights of the Zayandeh-Rood, were banned for dealing with physical love and
raising doubts about the revolution.
His penetrating explorations of social realities were also seen in the disturbingly self-reflexive Salam Cinema
(1994) - the cinema verite-style account of an audition that turns into a meditation on the corruption of power.
In 1998, he went to Tajikistan to make The Silence, about a 10-year-old blind boy supporting himself and his
mother by tuning stringed instruments.
In 2001, he released Kandahar, which captured the attention of the world after September 11 terrorist attack on
World Trade Center in New York.

JEON Soo-il, director, screenwriter and editor, was born in 1959. Educated in his hometown Busan and trained as a
filmmaker in Paris, he devotes himself to independent filmmaking, primarily in the city of Busan, while the
mainstream of Korea's movie industry operates out of Seoul. Celebrated for his high-minded approach to his themes
and fluid visuals, Jeon has a worldwide following.
His style is marked by a highly personal vision that explores the connection between identity and geography, art and
individuality. He is frequently invited to major international film festivals. Starting with his feature debut film, Wind
Echoing in My Being (1997), which was screened at the Cannes Film Festival, all of Jeon's films have toured major
international film festivals. Several of his films were received with enthusiasm abroad even before they were released
in Korea. Perhaps due to his experience of studying filmmaking in Paris, he is one of Korea's most popular directors in
France.
Among the films in this IFFI retrospective are two of Jeon's best-travelled cinematic works, I Came from Busan
(2010), which depicts the wandering of a young girl with an unwanted pregnancy, and Pink (2011), the story of two
women guarding a tavern at a declining port. Also in this package is 2012's El Condor Pasa, an intricately crafted tale
of a priest and a young woman's coming to terms with the brutal murder of a young girl.

SOUL OF ASIA
Synopsis: When a successful American businessman hears of a miracle making saint, he goes to India to find him though the saint
has left his body. He feels that a life without spirituality is meaningless. He wants to find a path that will guide him. After many
adventures, he discovers Sanatan Dharma and his Guru. One of the motivations for making this documentary was to dissolve
some of the prejudicial myths Americans have about India. Unfortunately, the value of the incredible wealth of India's wisdom is
not completely understood. The filmmaker attempts to share the Sanatan Dharma in a manner that will make it accessible to a
wider audience. The film includes a world music soundtrack by Grammy nominee Jai Uttal, exclusive interviews with Ram Dass
and Krishna Das, meetings with holy men and a new perspective on Indian philosophy.

TROPICAL MALADY
Sud Pralad
Synopsis: The first part of the film involves the tentative blossoming of romance between the story's two principal characters, the
shy country boy Tong and a beautiful soldier named Keng. Then the storytelling shifts from realism to allegory. Set in the deepest,
darkest heart of the jungle, the second half of the film is derived from a shamanic folk tale. It finds Keng tracking a ghostly figure
who periodically assumes the shape of a tiger, enticing encounters with a talking baboon, a ghostly cow and a man - Keng's
would-be lover - who shape-shifts into a tiger. Perched between two worlds, two streams of consciousness and two radically
different storytelling traditions, 'Tropical Malady' pushes the limits of cinematic narrative with grace. The shift from naturalism
to fabulism fundamentally uses different cues to express exterior and interior states - life as we live it and as we dream it.

Robin Williams was born on July 21, 1951, the only child of a Ford auto executive and a former
model from Mississippi. He completed drama training from Juilliard School in New York City
under tutelage of under famed actor John Houseman. Williams first became a star on the TV series
Mork and Mindy (1978-82), playing Mork from Ork, a sweetly nutty space alien learning about life
on Earth.
Williams moved quickly into films, often playing wise comic oddballs in heartfelt dramas. He was
Oscar-nominated for Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), Dead Poets Society (1989) and The Fisher
King (1991) before finally winning an Academy Award as the sympathetic psychologist in Good
Will Hunting (1997).
He played a wacky genie in the Disney animated feature Aladdin, the strong-armed title sailor in
1980s Popeye , a cross-dressing dad in Mrs. Doubtfire , a grown-up Peter Pan in Hook, and
President Teddy Roosevelt in the comedy adventure Night at the Museum (2006). His other notable
films include Insomnia, One Hour Photo, Robots and House of D (2004).

Richard Attenborough was a legend in his lifetime. He enriched and redefined British theatre and
cinema to an extent that few others have done. Through a life lived to the lees, Lord Attenborough
left a lasting imprint on everything and everyone that he touched. Rarely has British cinema
produced an icon like Lord Attenborough, whose appeal has transcended geographical boundaries
and generations. He was in the cast of the original 1952 production of The Mousetrap, one of the
world's longest running plays. Alongside him in the play was his wife, Sheila Sim, who he married
in 1945 and who was by his side when he breathed his last.
Lord Attenborough's fame as an actor both on the stage and the screen was huge, but he was
celebrated more particularly for the remarkable bunch of films that he directed. He will be
remembered primarily for being the man behind three of the finest cinematic biographies ever made
- Gandhi, Cry Freedom and Chaplin. Lord Attenborough made the three epics in the span of a
decade (1982-1992) that catapulted him to a league of producer-directors endowed with the ability
to bring extraordinary public figures alive on the big screen in an accessible and entertaining way.

Fugard as General Smuts, John Gielgud as Lord

Gordon Willis was born into a show business family on May 28, 1931, in the Astoria
neighbourhood of the New York borough of Queens. Both his parents were dancers on Broadway;
his father went on to a career as a make-up artist at Warner Bros. Willis got into filmmaking while in
military service during the Korean War. After a decade in the commercial and documentary
business, he became a director of photography in 1969. During the 1970s, he shot some of the
decade's best known films, from The Godfather and Klute, to All The President's Men and Annie
Hall. Willis is credited with creating a "painterly" look on screen, an artful balance between light
and shadow (he's been nicknamed "the prince of darkness" for his use of underexposed film). He's
also credited with helping Woody Allen emerge from gag comedies to more serious filmmaking;
Willis shot eight films with Allen between 1976 and 1985, including Manhattan, Stardust
Memories, The Purple Rose of Cairo and Zelig. He also tried his hand at direction with film
Windows (1981), which was a psychosexual thriller. Willis was nominated for Oscars twice, for
the third movie in The Godfather trilogy (1990) and for his wizardry in Zelig (1983). He retired after
1997's The Devil's Own.

THE GODFATHER
Alain Resnais, who passed away on March 1, aged 91, achieved prominence and became a crucial
part of the French nouvelle vague with his very first feature film, Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959),
which was adapted from a screenplay by Marguerite Duras.
Resnais had begun his career as a maker of documentaries, notable among which was the 30-minute
Night and Fog (1955), one of the first films about the Nazi concentration camps. Francois Truffaut
was enthused to describe the short documentary as "the greatest film ever made" and with good
reason.
Resnais' second feature, Last Year at Marienbad (1961), strengthened his reputation as a filmmaker
with a distinct, elegant and avant-garde style that challenged prevailing narrative patterns.
Resnais' career lasted for over six decades. He continued making films right until the end of his life,
delivering a prolific crop of titles adapted from other forms of storytelling, especially plays written
by British dramatist Alan Ayckbourn.
Resnais' final film, which he wrapped up days before his death, is also an Ayckbourn adaptation.
