ore companies are expected to go public this year,
which would be a
sign of healthy financial market.
Orange juice futures prices
spiked recently.
The government
is expected to report a slower
pace of job losses in December.

Visa, which made its stock market
debut in 2008, gained the most in
2009 among companies that have
recently gone public through an IPO.

IPO outlook

OJ and the cold

Initial public offerings, the process that companies use to go from
private to public, slowed sharply in the last two years. But the
companies that did go public managed to beat the broader
Standard & Poor’s 500 in 2009. This is
because only the best companies with
2009 Performance
the most backing from professional
S&P 500
investors were able to make it during
the financial crisis. IPOs should pick
up this year, experts at Renaissance
Capital say. Expect new offerings from
FTSE Renaissance
technology and drug development
IPO index
companies, which will need to raise
capital to keep growing. Private equity
firms may also sell off some of their

older holdings.

Orange juice futures prices are sensitive to the cold. Futures contracts hit a
two-year high on Wednesday over worries that freezing weather in Florida
could hurt crops. Prices dipped Thursday, but worries about cold weather in
the nation’s largest citrus-producing
state could cause prices to spike again.
If orange juice futures contracts stay
high, that could affect consumers in a
few months. Orange juice companies
usually lock in prices using futures contracts well in advance of sending products to the grocery store, which is why
there would be a lag.

Retailers’ profits
are improving, but
that doesn’t make
their stocks
must-haves.

Lots of retail stores are
having sales. But even if
you’re tempted by the
bargains they offer, you don’t
need to rush to buy their
stocks. They’re not the great
deals they seem right now.
Retailers are expected
to report healthier fourthquarter profits when they
announce results next
month. Part of the reason
is that holiday sales
were up slightly overall.
But the bigger reason
for the anticipated
profit increases is
that stores are
spending less
money on
ordering new
inventories.
That’s because
they expect fewer
shoppers in the
months ahead. And
that’s not a formula for
long-term earnings growth.
“Our concern is not
about the fourth
quarter but about
forward guidance,”
says Dan Hess,
founder and CEO of
research firm Merchant
Forecast. “The consumer is

24%

55%

spending money again, but
she is not necessarily
spending a lot on discretionary items.” Hess doesn’t
expect the fourth-quarter to
be a “blowout” and says that
cautious earnings guidance
will keep a lid on stock
prices in the short
term.
This ongoing
weakness in
discretionary spending makes it hard to
justify paying a
premium price
for retail stocks.
The average
price-to-earnings
ratio for all department store stocks
is 19 for 2010. That
compares with 15 for
the S&P 500.
If you must put retail
stocks in your cart, look
for ones that are relative
bargains like Wal-Mart
(WMT) or Gap (GPS).
Both are well-managed
companies with P/E
ratios below the S&P
500 average.
