SYSTEM DESCRIPTIONS
A.

Combined Standpipe and Sprinkler System: Fire-suppression system with both standpipe and
sprinkler systems. Sprinkler system is supplied from standpipe system.

B.

Automatic Wet-Type, Class I Standpipe System: Includes DN 65 (NPS 2-1/2) hose
connections. Has open water-supply valve with pressure maintained and is capable of
supplying water demand.

C.

Automatic Dry-Type, Class I Standpipe System: Includes DN 65 (NPS 2-1/2) hose
connections. Has open water-supply valve and dry-pipe valve with standpipes containing
compressed air. Opening fire-hose valve releases compressed air and permits water pressure to
open dry-pipe valve. Water then flows into standpipes.

D.

Wet-Pipe Sprinkler System: Automatic sprinklers are attached to piping containing water and
that is connected to water supply. Water discharges immediately from sprinklers when they are
opened. Sprinklers open when heat melts fusible link or destroys frangible device. Hose
connections are included if indicated.

E.

Dry-Pipe Sprinkler System: Automatic sprinklers are attached to piping containing compressed
air. Opening of sprinklers releases compressed air and permits water pressure to open dry-pipe
valve. Water then flows into piping and discharges from opened sprinklers.

1.5

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A.

Standard Piping System Component Working Pressure: Listed for at least 1200 kPa (175 psig).

B.

Fire-suppression standpipe system design shall be approved by the NIH Division of the Fire
Marshal.
