Hymn of Praise

Unison Scriptures

o GoD, oUR heLP in AGeS PAST

Under the shadow of Thy throne
Still may we dwell secure;
Sufficient is Thine arm alone,
And our defense is sure.
Before the hills in order stood
Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting Thou art God,
To endless years the same.

Luke 1:5-7 (nRSV)
In the days of King Herod of Judea,
there was a priest named Zechariah, who
belonged to the priestly order of Abijah. His
wife was a descendant of Aaron, and her
name was Elizabeth. 6Both of them were
righteous before God, living blamelessly
according to all the commandments and
regulations of the Lord. 7But they had no
children, because Elizabeth was barren,
and both were getting on in years.

Lamentations 3:22-24 (niV)
Because of the Lord’s great love we are
not consumed, for his compassions never
fail. 23They are new every morning; great
is your faithfulness. 24I say to myself, “The
Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for
him.”
22

Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
Bears all its sons away;
They fly, forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the op’ning day.

----------------------

O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Be Thou our guide while life shall last,
And our eternal home.

together by every supporting ligament,
grows and builds itself up in love, as each
part does its work.

Confession of Sins
Almighty and Most Merciful Father, we come before
You, acknowledging our sins, our shortcomings,
and our breaking of our Covenant with You.
Not only have we done things we ought not to
have done, said things we ought not to have said,
left undone so many things we ought to have done
and been silent when we should have witnessed
for You.
Not only are we guilty of that, O Lord; but we have also closed our eyes and pretended
not to see the injustices, the racism and the evil which pervade our everyday lives.
We have shut our ears and pretended not to hear the cries for liberation which come
from the lips, lives and hearts of the oppressed – even our own Black brothers and sisters!
Forgive us, O Lord, renew our courage and faith, and keep us ever mindful of Thy great
sacrifice. Hear us, we beseech Thee, as we come to You in love and worship giving Your
Name the praise forevermore.
******
To All Our Visitors ... To all who mourn and need comforting ... To all who are
friendless and want friendship ... To all who are oppressed and need liberation;
and to whosoever will come, Trinity opens its doors. Thank you for coming, and
may God bless you.

Advent Meditation
iS A neW BeGinninG ReALLy PoSSiBLe?
Thinking about a new beginning does not mean wanting to go back and be a baby again.
Few of us would want that. Rather, it means starting fresh from where we are. There are
many good things that all of us want to retain. They are part of who we are as persons.
However, no one goes through life without making some mistakes. There are things we
regret. These, too, are part of who we are, but we can learn from the past and make the
future different. One of the great messages of our faith is that there is such a thing as
forgiveness. Forgiveness cannot change the past, but it can help us to put the past aside
and try again.
The game of golf gives us an example of this. Official rules do not allow it, but among
friends it is often practiced. (In God’s sight we are among friends. We are family.) There
is a thing called a “mulligan,” a do-over. If you have made a major goof or hit the ball into
the woods, way off course, friends may allow you to try again. Don’t look for rules about a
“mulligan.” It is whatever your particular group of friends allows. God lets us make a fresh
start. If we can repair a past action, of course we should do so, but if not, we can move
ahead without having to carry the burden endlessly. We might say that the theological
term for this is “grace,” centered in the fact that God loves us.
Is this fair? – It is, when we see life not as a struggle to try to outdo everyone else. Life is a
process of making ourselves the best we can be and helping everyone find fullness of life
as far as possible. In life, it is possible for everyone to win.
God gives us a “mulligan.” We can “do-over” some of our past mistakes, learning where
we were wrong and doing better the next time. This does not mean that we will not make
more mistakes. However, God gives us this Christmas gift. Through loving grace, we can
be forgiven and begin again.

Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have

disgrace.” 18I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said
to me.

Choose Recyclable and Recycled holiday Cards: Make
sure your holiday cards can be easily recycled by
choosing cards without non-paper embellishments,
such as foil or ribbon, and look for cards that contain
post-consumer recycled content. Or, give the trees
a break this holiday season by using e-cards from
websites such as www.evite.com.
Use LeD holiday Lights: LED lights can last up to 10
times longer, use 80% less energy than traditional
incandescent holiday lights, and are ENERGY STAR
qualified. They are also more durable and shock
resistant than other lights because they do not have
moving parts, filaments, or glass. Find them at your
local hardware store. Don't forget to recycle your old
lights!
Go for eco-Deco: When planning a party, avoid
streamers, balloons, and other decorations designed
for one-time use. Create centerpieces from what you
have - pottery pieces, glass ornament balls, fresh fruit,
pine cones, squash, gourds, and fallen leaves. Buy
local, organically-grown flowers, or choose potted
plants to provide a year-round green.
Plan for Green Dining: Easy way to make your meal
eco-friendly is to make mostly, if not all, vegetarian
dishes. When it comes to leftovers, don't let them go to
waste! Invite your guests to bring reusable containers
to take home any leftover food, or let them borrow
your own reusable or recyclable containers.
