Heavenly Realities – Colossians 3:2
The phrase “set your affection”, is translated from one Greek word phroneo which means to
exercise the mind, by implication, to be (mentally) disposed. In other words, it could also be
read; “exercise your mind to be mentally disposed on things above” which would then bring us
to I Timothy 4:8, where Paul says “For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is
profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.”
(comparing physical training to godliness). Here is the exhortation; heavenly realities are
taught, studied and exercised. Paul encourages the Romans to be transformed by the renewing
of their minds. In other words as you renew your mind with the word, you are transformed. So
if you need to be more fruitful in the Godly, exercise you mind in that.
2. Rest in Christ - Ephesians 2:6, 1:20
Scripture reveals that after Christ offered up Himself, He sat down forever at the right hand of
His majesty. Meaning that He did a complete work, and now He sits in a place of rest. Consider
now that you are seated with Him in the heavenly places; it means that your work as well is as
finished as His. That is why you can be at rest in Him. You don't need to worry about how that
promotion will come, or how to be safe from that deadly virus, or how to be a better Christian.
All you need to know are the words of Jesus “it is finished.”
Understand this finished work, and ultimately you'll be fruitful in it. God sat you with Christ, so
do exactly that, sit. Whatever you do, do it in that position of rest and dominion.
3. You died - Colossians 3:3
To further look into Colossians 3:2, The apostle Paul tells the Colossians to set their affections
on heavenly realities, mainly because they are dead, and their real life is hid with Christ in God.
This applies to you as well, that day you received Christ, you died to self, and you were reborn
to a new reality. Which means that as far as the natural man is concerned, you died; now you
live a new life in Christ.
Paul himself understood this when he wrote, I am crucified with Christ, and now Christ lives in
me. You are therefore not trying to die to self, you already are dead. This is what you train your
mind into knowing. Knowing that as far as the natural self is concerned, you are dead. This is
why sin, guilt, disease, stress, disappointment etc have no hold on you. Why? Because you are
dead to them! Educate your mind this way and live victorious.
4. Affections – Colossians 3:2
Furtherer on Colossians 3:2, In exercising your mind to be mentally disposed on heavenly
realities, ultimately you change what kind of things affect you (cause you to react). As I believe
you know, what things you react to, are largely determined, by what things you attach much
importance to. If you attach much importance to your phone, should anything happen to it,
you'll be so out of shape; why? Because now you can't access that thing that you believe is a
very important part of your life. What Paul is saying is that concern yourself most with
heavenly realities. Let them be your addiction rather than the natural. Let your mind be set
constantly and consistently on heavenly realities. This is what you are to exercise.
5. Renewed Mind – Romans 12:2
As we have seen this week, it all comes back to this, when your mind is renewed, and trained
to focus on heavenly realities, in due time, you will start being fruitful in the things of God.
Educate your mind in the things of God, and see the change it will bring. What I am
encouraging here is not just positive thinking, but God-thinking, If may. This is, in my opinion,
the definition of godliness. It does not start with trying to be more holy, more loving, more

It begins with you understanding what Christ has done for and in you. And when you do. So do you want to be more loving? The educate your mind that by His Holy Spirit. ultimately your way of life will change in accordance to your thought pattern. more 'whatever you are told to be'. then you'll see this love work for you. God has already shed His love abroad your heart. Have great week end! .humble.
