Brochure

Description: One-fold brochure with a shorter front than back.

Date: Dec. 6, 2014
Course/Instructor: Comm 130, section 5/Brother Joel Judkins
Programs/Tools: Adobe Photoshop; InDesign; Illustrator
Objectives: The objectives of this project were to create a
brochure that displayed professionalism, contrast, encouragement to be for the
company being advertised, and create an original logo to go with the company.
Process: I opened Adobe InDesign, set my margins to .25
inches, and entered my body copy and photos: microphones, a
piano, a violin, guitars, and drums. These are taught at the School of Musical
Performance, so I chose to illustrate this on the inside of the brochure,
accompanied with copy that explains what each instrumental course will
include. Following, I took the piano photo and imported it into Adobe
Photoshop. I used the quick selection tool to cut everything else out of the
photo and only keep the piano. I followed this by refining the edges and
increasing the level of smooth, feather, and contrast. I placed the new version
of the piano into InDesign and applied text wrap around the piano. Following,
I chose to do my title in Illustrator so that there would be space in the words
School of and Performance, and I used a different font for Musical to
make it larger than the rest of the text. I added the same photo from the back
and front onto the side, where the Vocals, piano, violin, guitars and drums
text is placed. I made the photo on the side a continuation of the front.

Web Page

Description: This image is a spiritual montage, created on Adobe Photoshop

with masking as its main edit.
Date: Oct. 25, 2014
Course/Instructor: Comm 130, section 5/Brother Joel Judkins
Programs/Tools: Adobe Photoshop
Objectives: The objectives of this project were to learn how to use masking
layers in Photoshop; edit photos through smoothing, contrasting, vibrancing,
and sharpening; blend images together to create one large photo, while
accompanied with approrpriate text, fonts and proper alignment.
Process: I created this webpage by using TextWrangler on Mac software. I
combined an HTML and a CSS code and used them for the first time. I
edited the codes by adding my own elements to organize and decorate the site.
I chose this background image from Google because I wanted it to represent
the behind-the-scenes of film, which would fit well with Columbia
Entertainment. In addition, I opened Adobe Photoshop to select the color that
the logo was so that I could match it with the background color of my first
headline. I also made the text of my second headline the same color. I matched
these colors with the colors in the background image to apply my
monochromatic-red color scheme. once I took an overall look at my webpage,
I added padding to the sides of the body and the top of the headline. I also
added a dotted border around the second headline to add more a film look.

Final Montage

Description: This is an inspirational montage, describing the

success that comes from never giving up.
Date: Dec. 10, 2014
Course/Instructor: Comm 130, section 5/Brother Joel Judkins
Programs/Tools: Adobe Photoshop
Objectives: The objective of this project was to demonstrate my Photoshop
skills and knowledge by creating an inspiration
montage - combining three photos with a meaningful message.
Process: I began this project by inputing three photos into Photoshop. I layered
each photo with a mask so that when I went over each photo with the brush
tool, the photos would blend with one another. I made the first photo appear to
be people first starting to climb a mountain - metaphorically, the mountain of
life. Second, I put the other picture of the group climbing up the mountain on
the bottom of the montage to demonstrate that they worked their way up from
the bottom. Lastly, I put the photo in the middle - between the two photos - of
them when they made it to the top. I chose to layer it as such so show that good
things happen when patience is a large factor in life.

Sometimes that mountain youve

been climbing is just a grain of sand.

Montage

Description: This image is a spiritual montage, created on Adobe Photoshop

with masking as its main edit.
Date: Oct. 25, 2014
Course/Instructor: Comm 130, section 5/Brother Joel Judkins
Programs/Tools: Adobe Photoshop
Objectives: The objective of this project was to combine photos with a
spiritual message by using layers and masks.
Process: I enlarged the bigger photo of Jesus Christ in Adobe Photoshop to
have as the background. I followed that by placing the smaller photo of The
Savior with a child, and then I masked both photos and blended them
together. I decreased the opacity to 30% and 40% in Photoshop to make the
images blend more into the background, and then I switched to 100% to get
rid of the hard edges. Following, I used a black paint and varied brush sizes to
smooth the edges. Afterward, I added another layer for the text. I used
Arrus BT Bold to give contrast to the words I know the plans, by making
them a bigger size than the rest of the font, as a way to symbolize that The
Savior knows our lives and has every detail planned. I took out the bold to
carry the rest of the message. I followed this by overlaying the entire text to
blend with the background. When I finished the edits, I applied a sharpen filter
to the larger image of the Savior. I applied that filter so that He would have the
first main focus, and then have the text be the second focus.

I KNOW
THE PLANS
I have for you, declares The
Lord. Plans for welfare and
not for evil; to give you a
fturue and a hope.
Jeremiah 29:11

Letterhead

Description: I created this letterhead to have a natural appearl to the audience

by a quick glance, which I achieved through repitition and contrast with the
boxes and low-opacity Polaroids.
Date: Nov. 9, 2014
Course/Instructor: Comm 130, section 5/Brother Joel Judkins
Programs/Tools: Adobe Illustrator; Adobe InDesign
Objectives: The objectives of this project were to combine both Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign and create a professional letterhead to go along with
a business card. In addition, repetition where appropriate was a crucial factor
in the projects creation.
Process: I created a letterhead with consistent title themes and Polaroid photos
in the background. I decreased the opacity to make words easier to read when
typed onto the letterhead. I put the same information on the letterhead that I
put on the business cards, with the exception of my name on the address of the
letterhead. I put a low-opacity box behind the text at the top and bottom of the
letterhead and allowed a full bleed. This allowed proximity, alignment, and
repetition. I kept simplicity between the business cards and letterhead by
keeping the items at a low opacity and a simple font. I also incorporated the
logo that I had made in Illustrator for the card and letterhead at the top.

Business Card

Description: I created this business card to match with the

letterhead. A big element in this was a consistent logo with
consistent font, which would be repeated throughout the page.
Date: Nov. 9, 2014
Course/Instructor: Comm 130, section 5/Brother Joel Judkins
Programs/Tools: Adobe Illustrator; Adobe InDesign
Objectives: The objectives of this project were to combine both Adobe
Illustrator and Adobe InDesign and create a professional business card to go
along with the letterhead. Any time the logo and logos font were used, it had
to be the exact same - as it would on a companys business card and letterhead.
Process: I created a logo in Adobe Illustrator. I used the rounded rectangle to
create the camera, as well as the rectangles inside of it. In addition, I used the
pathfinder to blend each shape together to give it a more natural look. I also
created a polaroid photo in Illustrator. When I finished the logo and photo, I
opened a document in Adobe InDesign and placed the logo and polaroid photo
in the document. I created two rectangles for the business cards one for the
front side and one for the back side. I entered my company name and contact
information, as well as the polaroid photo in the background and the camera
logo in the polaroid. Since the companys name is Polaroid Lovers Club, I
made the streaks on the camera pink, as well as putting a heart on the camera.

Flier

Description: This is a black and white flier, promoting a graduate leadership

conference with the Vouant Company. Graduating seniors have the opportunity
to meet with executives of Vouant.
Date: Oct. 3, 2014
Course/Instructor: Comm 130, section 5/Brother Joel Judkins
Programs/Tools: Adobe Photoshop
Objectives: The objectives of this project were to design a layout for a flier
that reached the target audience of graduating seniors and include appropriate
typography and image and text placing.
Process: I sketched four different layout possibilities and chose one of them
to input into Adobe InDesign to create the final flier. I used the photo that was
provided to me to align with the text in the provided body copy; I made sure
to keep the two aligned. I emphasized the leadership conference in the title so
that graduates will know what the conference is about just by a simple glance,
which would spark their interest to read the text. I used boxes in the
background of the title to give contrast and attraction to the audience. I kept
white space between the top and the photo and text to keep simplicity, as well
as on the bottom between the logo, the black box with text, and the photo and
text. I kept the logo which was provided to me small so it wouldnt distract
the audience from seeing the title, the image and reading the body copy.

Logos

Description: I made these three logos for Columbia Entertainment. I used the
type and illustration styles of logos.
Date: Nov. 1, 2014
Course/Instructor: Comm 130, section 5/Brother Joel Judkins
Programs/Tools: Adobe Illustrator
Objectives: The objectives of this project were to learn how to
operate Illustrator, create three original logos for a company, and use the pen
tool when appropriate.
Process: I created these three logos in Adobe Illustrator. I began the first logo
by choosing a color scheme, typing and filling the text, then I used the
pathfinder and divided the shapes and text. Afterward, I colored each of the
shape to flow with my color scheme. I used the curved rectangular tool to
create the next two logos. I chose to give a cinematic feel to those logos to
relate to the entertainment part of Columbia. I applied contrast to the title of
the second logo by capitalizing the letter T and making it appear as a TV
stand. I made little boxes on the side of the regular-sized boxes to make it look
like a strip of film. I applied a similar theory to the last logo, as well.

Event Ad

Description: This is a full-bleed, color event ad to encourage BYU-Idaho

students and their families of all ages to attend a pizza party dinner that the
BYU-Idaho Communications Department is holding, to which all proceeds
will go. This ad was made in Microsoft Word, with the image scanned from an
EPSON scanner.
Date: Oct. 12, 2014
Course/Instructor: Comm 130, section 5/Brother Joel Judkins
Programs/Tools: Adobe Photoshop; Microsoft Word; EPSCON scanner;
PDF2PJG.net
Objectives: The objectives of this project were to create and edit a
full-bleed ad for an upcoming event for a company in Microsoft Word.
Process: I began this project by scanning an image of pizza on a plate from a
magazine that was promoting the plate with an EPSON scanner. I imported the
scanned image into Microsoft Word, made it larger, and turned it a little to the
right so that the focus would be on the pizza rather than on the plate and
still be catchy. I chose two different fonts to make the ad have more of a fun
feel to it so that it would grab the audiences attention as a fun event. I made
sure to keep alignment of the words to keep everything organized and unified.
When I completed the project, I converted the Microsoft Word document into a
PDF, then I used http://pdf2jpg.net to convert the PDF into a JPEG. I used that
website to convert the document and the scanned image into a JPEG.

Imaging

Description: This image demonstrates outside lighting in photography during

early afternoon when the natural light was at its brightest, as well as Photoshop
editing, to deliver a specific message.
Date: Oct. 18, 2014
Course/Instructor: Comm 130, section 5/Brother Joel Judkins
Programs/Tools: Adobe Photoshop
Objectives: The objectives of this project was to edit a photos saturation,
contrast, sharpening, and layers in Photoshop.
Process: I decided upon a color scheme before I took this photo. I chose on
a lime triadic color scheme, which led me to choose to take this photo on a
DSLR Cannon camera. The statue of the child reading is surrounded by
different shades of green in the grass, which allowed me to have a more
diverse selection in the color of the text, as well. After I took the photo, I
imported it into Adobe Photoshop. I began my editing process by changing the
levels of the photo to make it brighter, but also have a natural look. Following,
I edited the saturation and sharpness to blend together. I noticed that if I had
too high of a saturation, the sharpness made it look less natural and more
edited. This led me to decrease the saturation and sharpness by a few levels
to balance each other out. Moreover, I edited the vibrance to give the photo a
nicer feel. I also edited selective colors and color balance to brighten certain
colors and make others stand out. I also provided boxes in the background by
laying them underneath the image. This is when I provided more colors from
my color scheme. After I input the text and had completed my project, I
noticed that the photo wasnt as attention-grabbing as its background
distractions. As a result, I used the Gaussian Blue affect to slightly blur the
background of the image and keep the statue of the child more in focus.
Additionally, I used color swatches to keep the text in the color scheme. I
accomplished this by using the eye dropper to match certain colors from the
photo to allow proximity.
