Lesson Type: Theory

Unit Topic:

Mechanics of machine

Lesson Topic: Involute spur Gears

General Objectives:
At the end of the lesson students should:
1.0 Know the steps of procedure for constructing involute spur gears and
2.0 develop the skills required to produce accurate drawings of a gear tooth profile
Specific Objectives:
At the end of the lesson students should be able to:
1.1 define accurately the terms associated with the construction of the involute of a spur
gear;
2.1 perform accurate calculations on the parameters required to construct the involute
spur gear
2.2 construct accurately the profile of the tooth for an involute spur gear with a module of
10 to 25 teeth.
Lesson Content:
Definition of terms:
Pith Circle Diameter (PCD), pitch point, pressure angle, addendum (a), dedendum
(d), clearance (c), circular pitch (CP), circular tooth thickness, number of teeth
(T), module (m), base circle diameter, tip circle, root circle.

Rationale:
Learners who successfully complete this unit should develop their skills in the field of
Technical Drawing designs and will be competent in constructing cam profiles within given
standards. Learners will also appreciate that constructions transcends the classroom and have
wider implications for designs in industries.

Materials and Aids:

Multimedia Projector
Laptop with CAD software for teacher use
Computers (student) ACAD Software
White board to write instructions
Markers
Previous Knowledge:
1. Students will be engaged in a discussion about the types of gears used in machines
2. Students are familiar with the use of computers

Instructional Procedures:
Introduction (5 minutes):
Teacher will:

Use Diagrams to highlight the various types of cams namely; wedge, disc,
face, cylinder and end cams
Have a discussion on the operation of the mechanism shown and how it is
impacts design.

Learners

1.1 Ask learners to start up program and set up

drawing area to appropriate standard
1.2 Demonstrate the steps required to
construct a cam profiles for displacement
curve based on given data.
00-1800 UV Rise 40mm
1800-3600 UV Fall 40mm
Minimum Diameter 30mm
Shaft Diameter 12mm
Rotation - Clockwise
Follower type Knife edge

1.3 Remind learners of the need to work

accurately in taking measurements. Check
learners work periodically
1.4 Instruct learners in constructing cam
profiles for displacement curves for SHM
and UAR
1.5 Give assistance where necessary

-Boot up computers and set up program to

appropriate standards for drawing
-Simultaneously do the constructions step by
step with the facilitator.
Steps
1. Use the displacement diagram
previously constructed
2. Draw the vertical centre line for the cam
and project the height of the
displacement graph to it
3. Insert the minimum and maximum dia.
Circles
0
4. Draw radial lines of 30 intervals,
numbering them in reverse direction to
the cam rotation
5. Transfer all vertical distances from the
displacement diag. to the corresponding
radial lines measuring from the centre of
the cam
6. Draw a smooth curve through the points
obtained.
Ask for assistance to clarify any
misconceptions
Construct cam profiles for SHM and UAR
curves based on instructions given (repeat the
steps given above).

Conclusion:
The teacher will:
Recap by way of demonstration the steps in constructing cam profiles from displacement
diagrams
Evaluation:
The design of the cams will be graded.
Assessment Item:
Cam profiles constructed in class will be graded.
Additional exercises will be given from text for assignment. Pg 22, ex. 8, 10 & 11.
