Q1: As indicated from the article Tesco recognises that employee motivation is
important for the continued growth of the company. Discuss the benefits of motivated
workforce in the work environment. Use your knowledge, experience, and convincing
examples from the business world to justify your arguments
"The only way to get people to like working hard is to motivate them. Today, people must
understand why they're working hard. Every individual in an organization is motivated by
something different." - Rick Pitino. Employee motivation is a significant factor in the success
of any business. Motivated workforce in the work environment brings about a lot of benefits
for business.
To begin with, we can see that productivity is one of the most advantage of motivated
employees. Motivation levels within the workplace have a direct impact on employee
productivity. If employees are unmotivated, they are likely to spend little or no effort and
responsibility in their working. They avoid working as much as possible, waste time surfing
the Web, chatting or answering the phone, taking message, etc. On the other hand, if
employees are motivated, they fell like they are part of the firm. They will work hard and put
into every effort, ability and responsibility to complete their task meet deadline and have the
best quality product. This will eventually rise productivity of working.
Another benefit of motivated employee is leading a pleasant work environment. Pleasant
work environment that is populated by people who are engaged in their work, excited about
the potentials of the company and appreciative of their position will be a happier place to
work than one that is filled with people who are just there for the paycheck (Jagg Xaxx, n.d).
Motivated employees look forward to coming to work and fell every workday is a happy day .
The more positive your environment, the more motivated and productive the staff will be. In
the book Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, author Daniel H. Pink writes
that the crash of Wall Street is a striking example of the peril of motivating employees strictly
with gobs of cash. He advises that instead, companies should create conditions for employees
to find the joy in work itself. That can mean giving workers the autonomy to choose what
they do and with whom, which can help foster a desire for mastery of tasks and skill sets
and simply doing more, better ( Inc.staff, 2010)
The last advantage of motivated employee is retention rates. If employees are motivated, they
will be likely to retain more. By retaining employees, company can save money and time.
Every time you hire a new employee, you have to invest time getting that person up to speed

on the job requirements. Furthermore, hiring and training is an expensive process. The

From the above discussion, it is undeniable that motivation is one of the most important keys
to success. It is essential to keep the workforce stimulated and encouraged.

Q2: As stated in the article Herzberg showed that to truly motivate an employee a
business needs to create conditions that make him or her feel fulfilled in the workplace

INS1007

To what extent do you agree with his theory? Justify your arguments with examples and
relevant evidence.
People spend a significant part of their lives at work, so it is not surprising that they expect to
be motivated and satisfied with the job that they do. Employee motivation is a key to
individual performance, group productivity, and maintaining a pleasant office culture. From
my point of view, to truly motivate an employee a business needs to create conditions that
make him or her fell fulfilled in the workplace.
To begin with, it is easy to find that motivation directly relates to the achievement of
employees in the workplace. Achievement in the workplace deals with the pride and sense of
accomplishment employees feel about their jobs and employers. . A motivated person takes
action and does whatever it needs to achieve his or her goals. People with a high achievement
need prefer work with a moderate probability (around 50%) of success. For these people, lowrisk situations do not provide enough challenge, and high-risk situations are too chancy
(Griffin, n.d).
Another factor for satisfaction is recognition. The quest for recognition begins in early
childhood. We quickly learn to expect praise when we do something good - when we dont get
it our behavior changes accordingly. As adults, we bring these same expectations and
behaviors into the workplace ( Matuson). Recognition identify employees who have well
performance. The staff will be inspired by knowing their contributions are valued and that
management is confident in their capabilities. At Tejas Securities Group, for example, The
Chairmans Cup, a silver chalice inscribed with its name, is awarded each month to an
employee who is recognized for their individual contribution to the overall teams success.
The winner is then announced in a company wide meeting and is awarded the cup to display
at their work station. Rechner noted This announcement and award has become a fun and
highly anticipated event, recognizing the ongoing importance of individual contribution to the
companys success (Fielding, 2006)
However, although achievement and recognition play crucial role in creating satisfied
environment, it does not mean they always success in motivating employees. In 1968 Dr.
Edwin Locke released a study titled "Toward a Theory of Task Motivation and
Incentives". In his theory Locke explains that setting goals that are too vague can
lead to poor performance compared to specific and challenging goals. Goals that are not
properly crafted can become demotivating. If the goal is too easy or not specific enough, the

employee is not motivated to achieve it (Anderson & Media, 2011). Nevertheless, people with
achievement motivates are motivated by standards of excellence, deadline, responsibilities,
etc. They will motivate people in completing their work best.
To sum up, there are different motivation factors which inspire people variously and
employees eventually need to be motivated by something in order to succeed
