Vision – To try and develop Indian rural sector by participating, doing things efficiently, learning and passing on our knowledge to others. It will start with farming and then will be branched out into microfinance, education, health and any other new avenue that we may come across. Focus – Currently we need a plan to kick start our venture. Following are the prospective areas that we need to research on and check out the feasibility:
Floriculture – The idea is to grow exotic flowers with an initial focus on the domestic market and then scaling things up and exploring the export market. Vegetables – Growing season and off-season vegetables. Catering primarily to the domestic demand Spices – Not sure, need to explore Medicinal Plants – Not sure, need to explore Dairy – Running a cattlefarm and supplying milk to the local brokers and then moving on to become a distributor gathering milk from the local
Common Criterion Essentially covering the basic requirements for running an agri-business.
Place – First basic criterion is familiarity with the place which leaves us with four options namely, Kota, Sikkim, Patna, and Hyderabad.
o Legal issue like land acquisition. We will start with leased land but for scaling up
we may need to acquire land. There may be some domicile issues.
o Local Environment – Local farmers and businessmen and in general the local
crowd should at least not be hostile to our venture, if they are not friendly. Basically looking for a congenial environment to start the venture
o Local Market – There should be healthy domestic/local demand for our product.
Demand need not be very close but should be in 3-5 hrs proximity by road. For eg: kota doesn’t really have a big flower demand but jaipur (4 hrs) and delhi (5 hrs) do.
o Climate/Soil – Flowers require very specific climate conditions like ample sunlight
and low temperate with high humidity. We plan to do things under a poly house to minimize climate dependence. However if the outside climate is favorable our
climate control cost will decrease drastically. Needless to say soil needs to be fertile. Also some soils are branded as non-organic like maharashtra thus making them almost useless to our purpose as we plan to do almost everything in an organic fashion o Scalability – This will be a recurring theme in this plan as we want to scale up horizontally meaning entering into other agri businesses and vertically meaning moving up the value chain. For eg a particular place might have climate suitable for only one kind of agri product restricting our ability to venture out other products. o Skilled Labor – As all our ventures are exotic in nature, a certain kind of skillfulness is required on the labor side. For eg in TFP, Pune skilled labor was hard to procure because the place was far away from the main city.
o Irrigation Water – normal irrigation water cant be used as it has to be free of
certain ailments. Major problem for TFP was lack of proper irrigation water.
o Transportation/Storage – Road and air connectivity to major Indian markets. Cold
storage at airports is desirable.
Cost – total cost for starting the venture should not be more than INR 10 lakhs as we are first going to test the business and a higher inception cost will be too much of a risk.
