Role of Teaching Learning in Today's World
In the mod ern era of

teac hi ng l ear ni ng proc es s

development is bound to be of
i mmens e v a l ue to our
educational systems in general
and technical education system
in particular. The concept of
Learner
Cent ered
Teac hi ng
Methodology is getting nation-wide-attention.
Knowledge explosion has meant three things
namely, research and development, automation
and the spread of higher education. Traditional
institutions and teaching methods are gradually
diminishing and work roles are changing based
on parameters set by knowledge explosion. R&D
has involved the creation of new knowledge or the
ex tens i on of ol d k nowl edge i n nov el ways .
Automation has led to implanting of knowledge into
mac hi nes . E ducation has been equated with
implanting knowledge into minds.

managing them with advanced managerial tools are

essential. This has placed significantly increased
demands on technical manpower than has been
the case till today.

There is a need to redes i gn and reori ent

knowledge as a multi-dimensional force which can
take its form in sophisticated scientific theories.
Knowledge c an be inv ested and appli ed i n a
multiplicity of ways. It has been realized that
technology is far more than tools and machines.
The techniques associated with the use of those
tools and machines can be amazingly knowledgeladen. The proof for this is the extensive use of
Information technology in almost all the fields. In
economic terms , educati on is human c api tal
i nv es tment of al l k i nd s . A hol i s ti c s ens e of
knowledge, involving not only the creation of new
knowledge but also the implanting of knowledge in
machines and minds, is central to an understanding
of our society. Globalization has brought in its wake
an emphasis on consumer concerns, like quality
assurance, need for continuous up gradation of
quality at reduced cost, durability and variety etc.
In view of the enormous skilled manpower, India
may become a significant production centre of the
world. Economic restructuring heavily depends on
the performance of technology driven industrial and
services sectors. For competitiveness, adoption
and adaptati on of modern tec hnol ogi es and

Theref ore i t i s emph as i zed that s ubj ec ti ndependent des i gn m ethodol ogy s houl d be
developed wherein the student understands the
mul ti -di mens i onal i ty o f real l i f e probl ems .
Engineering activity, like the other great profession
of medicine, is prescriptive in nature and in its
practice, diverse skills are required. For e.g., a
capacity to work in overlapping areas between
disciplines and a flair for self- learning new skills.
An engineer of the future has to emerge as a
creative problem solver. Mere analytical skills are
not enough. An engineering design integrates
mathematics, basic sciences, engineering sciences
and complementary studies in developing elements,
systems and processes to meet specific needs. It
is a creative, iterative, open-ended process subject
to constraints which may be governed by standards
to varying degrees depending upon the discipline.
These constraints may relate to economic, health,
safety, environmental, social or other pertinent
factors. As such refinement in Teaching Learning
proc es s i s pi v otal f or the modern Tec hni c al
Education.

The present exponential rate of change in society

has drastically lowered predictability and increased
uncertainties. Almost everyone is convinced that
future is not an extrapolation of the present and
the past. Under these circumstances, avoiding
mistakes is as important as being innov ativ e.
Oppenhei mer s s tatem ent that s c i enc e and
tec hnol ogy hav e a s ymb i oti c rel ati ons hi p i s
certainly true. But science is preoccupied with
understanding and explaining, while engineering
i s c onc erned wi th d oi ng, real i zi ng and
implementing. Thus, the aim of future engineering
education should be the integration of knowledge,
skills, understanding and experience. It has been
noted that Spac e, C omputer, E nergy and
Communication will be the main technology drivers
in the near future.
