Sleep

Sleep
More people don’t think about sleeping and they don’t
care about it. They think that the sleep in state of
indolence inside the body and this body need to recharge. In
fact, scientifically proven otherwise of what people think
where it happen many complicated actions inside the
brain and there are many waves occur during the steps of
the sleep like Alpha wave, Beta wave, theta wave and
delta wave. But when someone has Insomnia he
begins to read about sleep. When we sleep at night we
inter in a different feeling this feeling may take several
time. So in this time we can’t see or hear and we can’t
realize what happen around us. We can say that when
you sleeping you live in different world. We can define
the sleep as a natural state of rest and during this rest we
recharge our body. People don’t know that they spend
third of our life in sleeping.

What Do I Do When I Sleep?

When we are tired in the evening we lie down. We go
from the typical, upright human posture to a horizontal
posture. As we fall asleep, what takes place?
Consciousness vanishes. Everything around us remains
as it was, but we do not perceive anything through the
door of our senses. In contrast to comatose states or
induced unconsciousness, we can still be awakened.
During sleep, our perceptions of sorrow, delight,
happiness, and worry are temporarily erased. Also pain is
not felt. As

long as I can feel pain I am awake. When I am able to fall

asleep, the perception of pain disappears even though
the cause is still present. We move during sleep, but it is
involuntary, undirected movement. (During sleep
walking [somnambulism] the person moves without the
participation of the consciousness.)During sleep our
conscious, mental activities such as thinking, feeling, and
willing are dulled. We lay in bed without any conscious
activity and when we awaken the next morning we are
rested, refreshed, and strengthened. Our tissues have
been supplied with more absorbent, watery-lively
substance: We are rejuvenated. For example, our inter
vertebral discs have gained fluid and we are up to one
centimeter taller in the mornings than in the evenings.
We go to bed in the evening feeling tired and exhausted
and we awaken in the morning feeling fresh and
energetic. Is that not a miracle? These processes appear
as a matter of course and we notice them only when
something goes wrong. During sleep the physical body
lies in bed. However, the body does not disintegrate, as
is the case after death; it lives. The functions of building-
up, growth, and regeneration are taking place more
intensively during sleep than in our waking state(1)

Functions of sleep

No one really knows why people sleep. Researchers have

proposed several theories to explain how sleep evolved
to be a necessary behavior: The purpose of rest is to
conserve energy, and, while at it, restore the organism.
Restore means get things back to a baseline condition
needed for later activity -- especially clearing out waste
products that build up during activity. In higher animals,
the nervous system becomes increasingly important to
the functioning of the animal. Being a particularly high-
maintenance system, the nervous system requires
considerable rest and restoration. Sleep is probably
devoted to the removal of waste products from the
nervous system (and elsewhere). In the process of
cleanup, neurons often fire “accidentally” throughout the
night, triggering sequences of firings. Sometimes, for
example, a person in deep sleep will get up and perform
some routine function such as getting dressed or making
coffee -- sleepwalking. Sleep goes in cycles -- first moving
quickly into deep, restorative sleep, then coming back up
towards wakefulness, then back down again, and so on.
Presumably, this cyclical pattern exists because sleep is
somewhat dangerous for animals, and it is important to
check on your situation from time to time. In social
animals, it is likely that one or another individual will be
near wakefulness at all times, and so be available to
sound an alarm if needed. When it is light, information
from the eyes go to a small area of the brain and keeps it
from releasing a hormone called melatonin. When it is
dark, the melatonin is released and tells us to sleep. For
this reason, some people like to call it "the Dracula
hormone," since it only comes out at night.

Stages of sleep
There are five stages for sleep 1 to 4 and the 5 is the REM
(Rapid eye movement). When you sleep you start with
stage one then stage two until you reach RAM and these
stages doesn’t happen one time it is happen several time
and it’s may be take 90 to 110 minutes. In each stage
there are a specific wav and the brain acts different in
each stage.

Stage 1

The stage 1 called light sleep because it is a first stage. In

the stage you can woken up easily and the wave in this
stage is a theta wave. The eyes and the body movement
is very slow .You may experience sudden jerky movement
of your legs or other muscles. These “sleep starts” can
give a sensation of falling. They are caused by the motor
areas of the brain being spontaneously stimulated.

Stage 2
It’s called moderately light sleep. 50% of our time in
sleep spent in stage 2. The eye movement stop and the
brain wave during this stage. There will also be brief
bursts of rapid brain activity called sleep spindles.
Stage3
It’s called transitional sleep and it’s a first stage of deep
sleep. The wave of the brain in this stage is combination
of slow and fast waves it’s called delta waves. During this
stage it’s a difficult to make someone woke up and if you
woke up you feel groggy and disoriented. And you spend
in this Stage up to 5 minutes.
Stage 4
It‘s the second stage of deep sleep and during this stage
the brain make a slow waves. Also in this stage it’s a
difficult to make someone woke up. Stage 3 and stage 4
it’s very important to the people to feeling refreshed in
the morning and if you don’t take good time in these
stages your feeling will not be good in the morning and
they to gather called slow –wave sleep. This stage take
about 20 to 40 minutes.
REM sleep
REM means Rapid eye movement. During REM the dream
occurs and the breathing become faster and the eyes
move rapidly and the muscles become immobile. Heart
rate and blood pressure increase. Men may develop
erections. About 20 percent of sleep is REM sleep for
adults.
