My Model. Name the person in your life who had the greatest impact on who you are today.

Genesis 25:21-23
Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was childless. The LORD answered his prayer, and
his wife Rebekah became pregnant. 22 The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, Why is this
happening to me? So she went to inquire of the LORD. The LORD said to her, Two nations are in your womb, and
two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will
serve the younger.

How do we raise children in our time? Young

children are extremely influential as they are
vulnerable. A little child has awesome power in
peoples lives.

Parents have an intense responsibility to raise a

family Gods way. But we are prone to make
mistakes raising up the young. Lets take a look at
the example of Isaac and Rebekah in raising their
twin boys Esau and Jacob.

The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful

hunter, a man of the open country, while Jacob
was content to stay home among the tents. Isaac,
who had a taste for wild game, loved Esau, but
Rebekah loved Jacob. Genesis 25:27-28

How easily parents can favor the child who looks

like them. They think they can re-live themselves
through the child who resembles them.

Some parents are under pressure to make their

children conform to the rules and expectations of
the society rather than to see them in their unique
design as intricately fashioned by God.

Every child is not merely a quantity but an entity.

F.W. Boreham in his poem, The Sword of
Solomon wrote that two halves of a baby make no
baby at all On this higher plane of human
sentiment and experience, the laws of mathematics
collapse completely.

God, in His awesome power, has arranged each

childs DNA with billions of features to be
singularly distinctive and irreplicable. Parents
should marvel at each childs distinctiveness and
teach children to see themselves the way God has
uniquely wired and designed them.

Lack of Communication

Apparently there was lack of communication in

the family of Isaac. Esau did not realize how much
he grieved his parents for choosing ungodly wives
(Genesis 26:34-35; 27:46; 28:1).

Outside your commitment to Jesus, the next most

important decision you will ever make is choosing
the person you will marry. You will either make
heaven or hell on earth on that decision. Only in
marriage do the four types of love agape, philia,
storge and eros all come together.

Parents should sit down with their kids and

intentionally talk to them about sexuality and
sexual expressions. Young women must offer their
beauty to God first. Young men should treat
women with dignity and respect.

Jacob was running. He deceived his brother and

his father. He was engineered by his mother. He
was raised to run away. But as he was running he
found out that he cannot outrun God. In the midst
of his deception, God was pursuing him.

WORD (contd)
The hound of heaven will follow you even to the
darkest corner of the world and will speak to you
and try to reach you where you are.

Jacob came to his defining moment when he

struggled with God and sought His blessings. But
God asked him his name first which God later
changed from Jacob to Israel. Why did God ask his
name? Because Jacob lied the first time about who
he was when he stole the blessing of his brother
from his blind father.
You will never find greatness until you recognize
who you are. Our hearts must be regularly
cleansed from stuff that should be removed. Until
then, greatness will not come.

Discussion Questions:

Whats Next?
Communion with God. Jacobs first step after
struggling with God was to return in humble
communion with God to seek His blessings.

Reunion with his brother. Jacob came to Esau,

and they embraced. Jacob saw the face of God
when he looked at Esau, filled with undeserved
favor, and forgiveness (Genesis 33:10-11).

Transfer the Trust. Pass the trust to your

children. Your hope is not in politics or people
outside your family. Your hope is in the way you
raised your own children.

If you made mistakes, come back. It is not falling

that is worst but it is staying on the ground. So
stand up! Do what God is telling you to do.

(Leaders: Please choose questions that are appropriate to the level of spiritual maturity of your members)

1. Babies and Nations. What did God see in the twin babies of pregnant Rebekah in Genesis 25:21-23?
What attributes of God can you identify in this passage?

2. Raised to Run. For biological and spiritual parents: How were you raised by your parents? How are you
raising up your children now?

3. Trust Fund. If God calls you home now, are you ready to leave your children with the transfer of trust to
your family (biological and spiritual)? What are you passing on to them?

Who are you?

If God asks you now with a defining question, Who
are you? What is your answer?
Write down your answer and make a personal
reflection as to what your answer tells about you
and your family who raised you.
Share your reflections with your accountability
