If you call a dowser, that person can visit your property and dowse it. Generally it is the grounds outside that are dowsed. Sometimes people are searching for a source of water on their property, other times they want information on the best site for a house. On occasion, a property is dowsed to learn the type of energy in and around the home. (note: Author Chris Bird says that "to dowse" is to search for anything. This is generally done
with the aid of a hand held instrument, such as a forked stick, a pendulum bob on a string, Lshaped metal rods or a wooden or metal wand.)
When Richard, an expert dowser, came to my home for a group meeting, he dowsed our back yard. He declared that it had good energy and in fact he found a golden stream of energy that ran through our property and continued beyond it. That was interesting to me, but not especially useful since I could not see or feel that golden energy – or any other energy for that matter. On another occasion, Richard dowsed the front of our house. I called him when we saw that the driveway in front the house was sinking and needed repair. I wondered if there was an underground stream of water flowing through that could be causing the problem. Richard dowsed the area and said that there was not a water issue and that the sinking was merely from the settling of the ground below the driveway. That satisfied me. I felt much better knowing that there wasn’t a chronic water problem under the driveway. While Richard was in the front of the house, he dowsed the energy of the area and cleared it. He also put “protection” in the front of the house. So, the grounds and outside of our house were energetically in good shape. The inside always seemed fine as well. Because of the many healing groups that met in our great room, it seemed to be a “feel good” environment. The great room always drew praise from people entering it. They never could put their finger on what made them like the room or what made them feel good in it. But many commented on how nice the room is or how beautiful it is. The room is large and comfortable, but not elegant or expensively decorated or furnished. So, I always assumed the comments related to the unseen energy of the room. We have lived in this house for nearly 15 years, so these dowsings have happened over that period of time. The next area of the house I had checked was my office in the lower level of the house. I don’t remember now what prompted me to have Linda come and look at it, but she did come and it was interesting. She found that there were energies connected to the land that had stayed here and were frustrated. So, she told me, I would experience frustration when working in that room. She was correct. At one point I was editing a national organization’s newsletter and the founder and president wrote a column that sorely needed editing. Yet, she would not let me touch it. She required that her writing go into the newsletter as submitted. I used to retype the material into my computer and was fraught with frustration at her run-on sentences and unnecessary verbiage. Once I was so upset with this woman that after working on her column I instantly came down with a cold. I knew clearly where that cold had come from – my frustration.
Once Linda identified the energies in my office, she cleared them out. She then checked other areas of the lower level which included two guest rooms. One of the guest rooms was nicely decorated, but the other was rather plain. It had twin beds with a nightstand between them, a deacon’s bench where visiting children could dump their luggage, and a table with a mirror over it. There were a couple of lamps in the room as well, but the décor was clearly plain. Linda walked into the room and stood still. She felt a sadness there and said that it would really benefit the room to have some love and attention put into it. She suggested a plant and some soft fuzzy stuffed animals. I understood right away what she meant. That room, which we called “the twin room”, was used for small children and it was not set up for anyone in particular. The room felt neglected. After Linda left I set about making amends to the twin room. I gave away the deacon’s bench and replaced it with an upholstered chair. I hung a big floral painting over the chair and placed a small table next to it. On the table I placed live plants. On the top of the chair now sits a white, fluffy stuffed dog who oversees the room. And for added energy, when our Beagle died, we buried his ashes outside below the twin room window. The room is happier now and feels better to me when I enter it. As part of that energy upgrade, I also totally redecorated the guest bathroom adjoining the room. It is so much nicer now that it’s one of my favorite rooms in the house. I spent many hours stripping wallpaper from that bathroom, but it has been worth the effort. After all of this work on our house, one would think it would be energetically perfect. Yet, it was not. You see, people affect the energy of the space they occupy. For a number of years we employed a housekeeper. This woman did an adequate job in cleaning our house. She was responsible only for the upper level which includes the master bedroom and bath, the dining room, kitchen, office, utility room, half bath and great room. I often thought that when she came to clean it was as though a tornado had sped through the house. It was her habit to come to the utility room and pull out all of the cleaning supplies and vacuum cleaner hoses and heads. She then would proceed to clean all of the rooms at the same time. By that I mean that she would clean part of one room, then another and another, but never finish one room completely until the entire job was done. This left our house in complete disarray for the three hours she was with us. It became more and more difficult to tolerate her energy and cleaning style, so my husband and I would leave for lunch and errands soon after she arrived. When this housekeeper left, the house appeared clean and polished. Yet, when I had a painter working in the house and did the cleaning myself, it was apparent that there were jobs left undone. In the short time she spent at the house, she could not do a thorough job and because she cleaned two houses each day, there was no extra time for her to give to our house. As her personal life became more complicated, our house’s energy became more frenetic. There was an unsettled feeling about the place. To complicate matters, the housekeeper started arriving whenever after noon that she could get here and often that meant we didn’t see her until 1:30 or later. Then it got so that she would rarely stay three hours with the excuse that she had to pick up grandchildren from school or go to the doctor, etc. I continued to pay her for three hours, but wasn’t happy about the arrangement. Finally, there was a final straw that broke up this arrangement. I had cleaned the house after the painter left, so I did not need the housekeeper to clean. I did, however, need help in washing down the outside of the kitchen cabinets. I told her to come and that I had a special project I wanted her to help with. She told me she would be at my place
early one day – around eleven, she said. I waited and waited, anxious to get started on the project. She finally arrived around 12:30 saying that her previous client had extra work for her that day. She sensed my frustration with her and offered to leave. I accepted and told her that after the first of the year I would not use her anymore. This was in November and I asked her to call me to arrange dates for her to come in December. She never called. I have not heard from her since. So, what was the energy in my house after all of that? Not good. It seemed to have a lingering feeling of low energy and discomfort. I called in help. This time it was a Reiki Master who also does House Blessings as well as energy clearings. When Sandra arrived at our home she brought with her a large box with the items she uses to set up an altar. These items are spiritual icons which hold the intent she sets for her work and makes the clearing a sacred ceremony. Once the altar is arranged, Sandra stands quietly to get a sense of the direction she should clear first. Once she clears that corner of a room, she clears the other three corners bringing the energy to the center for release. She uses large feathers to sweep the energy. She burns white sage in an abalone shell and carries it from room to room using the feathers to fan the sage. In the Native American tradition, white sage is a purification herb that is used to clear the energy fields of participants in any ceremony. I watched quietly as Sandra went about blessing our home. The aroma of the white sage was pleasing and as she worked, I felt appreciation for having my home back in balance. Would I feel a difference, I wondered. After she left, I walked through the house and to me it felt much calmer. Around that same time I learned that a woman I had known some years before was available for house keeping. She is a gifted woman in many respects, but at this particular time in her life a job of a physical nature like house cleaning suits her. I took a chance in calling her since I felt she would surely be completely booked. Luck was with me. Not only did she have a free day, but it was Thursday, the day that I was accustomed to having the house cleaned. My conversation with her took place a couple of weeks before Christmas, so I expected at best to see her after the first of the year. Instead, she offered to come the following Thursday. When Lucy arrived that next week, I knew all was well. She carried with her a basket of cleaning products that are natural and pure. She also told me that she only works on one house each day and therefore is not rushed to complete the job in order to get to another. She now comes to my house for four hours and quietly works her way from room to room. The house smells so good from the essential oils in the cleaning products. And when Lucy leaves, there is a sweet sense that the house has been blessed with her presence. I find that her work inspires me to keep the house in better order than ever before. I now purchase natural cleaning supplies that are made with natural essential oils, are biodegradable and phosphate-free. In addition, the manufacturer never tests these products on animals. My experiences with my home have convinced me that indeed houses have energy. They are influenced by we who live in the home and by others who visit it or work in the home. By being sensitive to the way my house felt, I was able to elicit the able assistance of people who brought it back into balance. It’s a “feel good” house all of the time now.
