WSD BOARD 'IAEMBERS Anna Damiani Art Bradley DavidDraper Gary Gray Jeff Judd Ron Jablonski This monthhas been a seriesof emotionalups and downs - a mixture of sad times and great joy. As Aprilbegan, severalofus "Passed the Sea in '93. Greatjob, Sandy Eggo!! April3rd, our friend On Saturday, Cap Moran (Anderson) passed away after a long battleagainst AIDS. Let me just say that I will always rememberCap's dry (and sometimestwisted)sense of humor and his love of the traditional. His artistictalentswill live on for many of which he designed us in the T-shirts for our retreats. He's left me many always. memories that I willtreasure Ciaofor now, my friend. Duringthe earlyhoursof April 18th, Eddie Smith went on to join Cap and the othersthat have already left us. Eddiewas one of those people who was always doing something. He was Treasurerof Western Star for severalyears. He helpedto teach severalclassesand was always busy on one projector another.l'll always remember how excitedhe wouldget wheneverhe found a new crafts project. He was always creating. ldeas neverseemedto stop coming from him. When he was gone,he remindedme how lucky I was to have had him as a friend. Last weekend I was fortunate enoughto be able to go to WashingtonD.C. lt was truly an I amazingexperience. don't think there are words to adequately describethe feeling of walking through the streets of D.C. surroundedby so many gay people. The feelingwas at time overwhelming. the White House, In at the Capitol, viewingthe ridingthe Metro, and (of Monuments, course) in Dupont Circle there were gay people everywhere.Everyone was friendly. There was a very festive feeling in the air. I can't believethe numbersthat the Park Service is announcing! Deor Squore Donce Friends,
I will beginby welcoming membersof all the Purple'93 class. Looking aroundand seeingyour faces grin with that beginner's look of joy makes me proud. Also, this class I am seeingthe class from a different perspective- not only as Administrator but as an instructoras well. I will be assisting Don with the instruction the class. I ask of that you bare with us. We are all learning. As all of you begin to get to know other membersof your class, thoseacquaintances will becomefriendsand you willbeginto learnthat squaredancingtruly is 'friendship set to music.' Many of you will noticethat sometime aroundthe lastweek of June many Club memberswillsuddenly seem to disappear. Don'tworry,we'llbe back soon. We will be travelingnonh to Seattlewhere we will be attendingthe tenth lnternational Association of Gay SquareDanceClubs(IAGSDC) Convention.lt is not too soon to begin planning nextyear'sConvention for which willtake placein Washington D.C.over the Fourthof July weekend.

DearSquare Friends, Dance
I hope all of you that went to Conventionhave returnedsafely and broughtback many fond memories. I knowthat this will be one Convention that I will neverforget. The Friday afternoonGrand March seem to set the tone for the weekend.lt was energetic, exciting and filledwith emotion. The weekendgave me chanceto see many old friendsand to make some new ones. This Conventionwas also one of the most emotional times of my life. Sunday Brunchbegan typicallyenough with the GeneralMembership meetingand some entertainment Ms. by l'.4ccleena, l-1cnky the Tonk Queen. Then Freemanoresented the medallions recognition ten for of years of attendanceat Convention. As I sat there watch those thirty or so peoplereceivetheir medallions, was I filledwith emotion. Theirvery presencewas a major achievement. By the time Skip presented Freeman with his medallion, was all I teary-eyed and emotional. After this, Lauro came up to present the Golden Boot Award in Keith Snowden's memory. As he talked about Keith,he broughtback memories times I had sharedwith of Keith. Then Lauroannounced my name and those of Stan B. and BillS. from Sacramento. Those of you that were there know exactly how totally overcomeI was. I don't remember getting the stage (but I remember to that when I returnedto my seat, I had wads of kleenexstuck in all my pockets). This was an incredible honor! My heart stillfillswith emotion wheneverI think aboutthat moment. With so many people that have dedicated much of their livesto so gay squaredancing,it will be difficult to choosenext yea/s recipient(s). However, know that we willdo our I

best to pass on the honor which was left to us by my friend Keith.

Camp Caz

Patty White Marie Mohr Peggy Osterkamp

LEADING LADY Every theater has a member who is renowrl for her grace and sense of style. Westem Star is no exception. Our LEADING LADY has graced many of our events and handled the adulationwith great aplomb. She brings to Westem Star a new sense of style and makes people wonder where she shops. ln Seattle, she was chosen as the'Krystal Vanishgirl with the most potential' (and most room for improvement). Carlotla Alfrey

SILVER NEEDLE There is only one article of 'Westem Star Wear' which is consideredto be official--the Westem Star vest. lts design requires someone to coordinateevery aspect of its creation. lt also requirespeople to help cut, seu and decoratethese vests. To concludeour recognitionfor volunteerism for Westem Star Dancers,I would like to add a personalnote. As many of you know, I will for be steppingdown as Administrator Western Star after this year. I have been on the Board in some capacityor anotherfor six out the last seven years. lt is now time for others to take over. While I will not be completelygone, my life is changing. I will be retumingto school in Novemberto pursue a career goal. This will be a long term commitment. You will always be a part of my family. I will need your support in this pursuit. I know that I leave Westem Star in very capable hands. You've seen this by the amount of involvement that was mentioned here tonight. Continueto support Westem Star as you have over the last year. Get more involved. Choose a project, make it your own and do your best to completeit. Run for the Board. Otfer ideas and be willing to help implementthem. Take time to care for each other as well as for yourselves. I see as I look out among all your faces that each of you is a STAR of the highest. I feel that the new board will be a very CAMP CAZADERO enlhusiastic and hard working group who will strive to lead WSD in the comingyear. Everyone is gearing up for annual trek to the woods, Camp Cazadero. This will be the tenth anniversary retreat and will At a recent Scottish Dance get together Russ found the provide lots of fun, partying, dancing, and just plain relaxation followingpoem that seems appropriate our club also: lor lf you have never been, just ask someone who's been lhere what to expect. AI{GELS WAT{TED We are looking for a few good dancers lor angeling our two class nights. The classes are small, but spiritedand

This year we are trying something new (for us) lor the holiday season. Each club and class member is asked to fill out the questionnaire(see flyer), then our Santa helper will secretly assign Holiday Angels to everyone in early November. Then the angels will secretly do good deeds lor their wards. At the WSD Christmas Party, the Ward will then give his unknown Angel a gift and the identity will be realized. This event is not replacingour regular gift exchange, but will be in additionto it. The Angelscan do anythingfor their ward, Bake a cake, Knit a shawl, Send a card, Write a poem., etc., but they must keep their identity secret until the Christmas Party. This should be lots ol fun and maybe bring a little spirit to the club. Questionnairesmusl be returned by October 27. For more information this, please contact Anna D. or myself. on

IAGSDC TENTH AI'INIVERSARY BOOK WSD has purchased a copy of the IAGSDC history book for club use. For a simple 25 cent donation you may check the book out for a week. This is a great book and deservesto be read by everyone, telling the story of how the IAGSDC was formed and grew into the organizationas it is today. The book is on lhe literaturetable so give il a look.

MEMBEROF THE MONTH As you know,I willbe selecting a member of the month each month. This month's Member of the month is AIt Bnadley, a real worker,a great cook, and an untiringmember of WSD. At the Levi's, Leatherand Lace Dance, he cut his wrist on a broken bottle as he was unloading sodas. Did this deter him? No, he went to the UCSF EmergencyRoom, had a few stitches, and retumedto dance a few tips before the end of the dance. Art was Camp Caz Counselorthis year, and was responsible the lavishspread put out at for the Board Party Saturdayaftemoon. He did a wonderfuljob. In fact any Art undertaking pursues, tums out well. He has been our unofficial soda personfor the last few years, luggingthe chests and sodas to all our functions. Att has also been on the WSD Board of Directorsfor the past year. Art assuredthe Board at the last meetingthat he will continueto work in some capacityfor the club. lt is with heartfett appreciationthat I say THANKYOU to OctoberMemberof the Month, Art Bradley.
