S&P GLOBAL BMI SHARIAH

Description
The S&P Global BMI Shariah measures the performance of large-, mid- and small-cap stocks across 26 developed and 20
emerging markets that meet rules-based screens for Shariah compliance as defined by Islamic investment principles.

Index Attributes
Serving as a comprehensive global equity benchmark for Islamic investors, the index is a Shariah-compliant subset of
the S&P Global BMI. The S&P Global BMI (Broad Market Index) consists of more than 10,000 companies and comprises
the S&P Developed BMI and S&P Emerging BMI.
Shariah refers to Islamic canonical law based on the teachings of the Koran. To ensure that our Shariah indices comply
with Shariah law, we collaborate with Ratings Intelligence Partners (RI), an independent London/Kuwait-based consulting
company that specializes in solutions for the global Islamic investment market. RIs team of qualified Islamic researchers
work directly with a Shariah Supervisory Board of five Islamic scholars that interprets business issues and recommends
actions related to the indices.
Historically, the performance of our Shariah-compliant indices has been highly correlated to conventional benchmarks.

Methodology Construction
Universe. Must be a constituent of the S&P Global BMI. To be included in the index, constituents must have a floatadjusted market cap of at least USD 100 million and annual value traded of at least USD 50 million.
Constituent Selection. All constituents of the S&P Global BMI are screened for Shariah compliance. These screens
fall into two categories: sector-based and accounting-based.
Sector-Based. Some businesses offer products and services that are considered unacceptable or non-compliant.
Examples of these activities include conventional financial services, gambling, adult entertainment, alcohol and tobacco.
Accounting-Based. Company financial ratios may violate compliance thresholds. Three areas of focus are leverage,
cash and the share of revenues derived from non-compliant business activities. All of these screens are monitored on an
ongoing basis.
Ratings Intelligence Partners. RI provides the Shariah screens and filters the stocks based on these screens. They
work with a Shariah Supervisory Board that recommends actions to maintain the strictest Shariah standards for the
indices.
Monthly Rebalancing. For changes due to Shariah compliance, the index is rebalanced monthly.
Annual Reconstitution. The index is reconstituted on the same schedule as its underlying benchmark.
