No mention of ENDA in
State of the Union address
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
President Obama had few words in his State of the Union speech
Tuesday night on LGBT issues, disappointing many advocates who
had wanted him to address the lack of federal non-discrimination
protections for LGBT people.
Devoting a large portion of his speech to income inequality,
Obama called on Congress to pass other initiatives such as a
Voting Rights Act, a measure to ensure equal pay for women and
immigration reform and pledged to sign an executive order
raising the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour for federal contractors.
In the coming months, lets see where else we can make progress
together, Obama said. Lets make this a year of action. Thats what
most Americans want: for all of us in this chamber to focus on their
lives, their hopes, their aspirations.
LGBT advocates had been pushing Obama to include in his
speech a call to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and
a pledge to sign an executive order barring federal contractors from
discriminating against LGBT workers.

As the worlds attention turns to the Sochi Olympic Games, theres as much
buzz about LGBT rights and terrorism fears as medal counts.
Early reports suggest Russia isnt ready for the games, with attendees
tweeting images of incomplete hotel rooms and failing infrastructure.
Meanwhile, LGBT advocates from the United States began arriving in
Sochi, with at least one reporting that, so far, there have been no early
signs of LGBT protests.
Athlete Ally founder Hudson Taylor told the Washington Blade in an
exclusive interview from Sochi on Wednesday that he has thus far seen little
evidence of LGBT advocacy in the city ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics.
Many of the athletes we are working with are just getting here and
getting their bearings, he told Blade contributor Kevin Majoros during a
telephone interview.
Taylor, a former college wrestler who coaches the sport at Columbia
PRESIDENT OBAMA failed to include a reference to ENDA in his State of the Union address this week.

Same-sex marriage
becomes legal in Virginia
In an unexpected development, the
U.S. Supreme Court on Oct. 6 refused
to take cases seeking to uphold laws
banning same-sex marriage in Virginia
and four other states, clearing the way
for gay and lesbian couples to marry in
Virginia that same day.
With Virginia Gov. Terry McAulie and
state Attorney General Mark Herring
strong supporters of marriage equality,
the Supreme Courts action also resulted in
Virginias immediate recognition of samesex marriages performed in other states.
Same-sex couples from all over
the state descended on their local
courthouses to obtain marriage licenses,
with some getting married on the spot.
LGBT advocates in the state hailed the
development as an historic breakthrough
in LGBT equality not only for the
Commonwealth of Virginia but for the South.

signed an executive order barring
federal contractors from engaging
in discrimination based on sexual

Although concerns persisted that
Obama would include a religious
exemption in the measure, known as
Executive Order 13672, no carve-out was
included beyond the already existing
Bush administration language allowing
religious-aliated businesses to favor coreligionists in hiring practices.
According to the Williams Institute,
the order will protect 34 million
workers, or about 22 percent of the
American workforce. In December, the
Labor Department announced the rule
for the executive order has become
final, giving federal contractors 120
days to update their policies to comply
with the measure or lose out on
federal contracts.

Want to start the new year o with a few laughs? D.C. Shorts, voted Coolest
Short Film Festival by Movie Maker Magazine, presents two nights of comedy
on Jan. 9-10 with D.C. Shorts LAUGHS!, a block of short comedies interspersed
with live stand-up performances by the local comedians.
Theres an early and late show on both nights that feature dierent lms
and comedians. Each show will last 90 minutes and feature comedies that have
previously appeared in the D.C. Shorts Film Festival, which started in 2003.
This is a perfect opportunity to catch lms you might have missed from
last years festival while whetting your appetite for the big D.C. Shorts Film
Festival in September, says Jon Gann, founder and director of D.C. Shorts.
Comedy fans generally love funny movies as well as stand up, so we wanted
to throw an event that brings both of them together.
The shows are at Burke Theater at the U.S. Navy Memorial Heritage Center
(701 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W.) at 9 and 11 p.m. both nights. Regular tickets
are $20 but double header packages are also available. Details at laughs.

From far-ung tournament wins to strong Gay Games showing, local leagues enjoy banner year
By KEVIN MAJOROS
It was another banner year for the
LGBT sports community of Washington.
The clubs have continued their steady
growth and are the shining example of
what a cohesive LGBT sports community
can accomplish.
Twenty teams consisting of 270 players
battled during season nine of the D.C.
Gay Flag Football League in pursuit
of the DCGFFL Super Bowl title. The
TangerQueens (Orange) took out the
Rear Admirals (Navy) in a score of 41-28
in the championship game.
Ski Bums spent 2014 looking for the best
skiing and snowboarding powder around
the United States and other parts of the
world. Upcoming international trips in
2015 include Austria, Japan and Argentina.
National trips to Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming,
Vermont, New Hampshire and New York
are also being booked. This years D.C. day
trip will be to Seven Springs, Pa.
Chesapeake and Potomac Softball
sent three teams to the Gay Softball
World Series in Dallas and continued to
provide league play in the open division
and womens division. They hosted their
annual MAGIC Tournament and traveled
to New York City and Cleveland for more
tournament action.
The D.C. Strokes Rowing Club
continued with multiple rowing programs
and hosted the 21st annual Stonewall
Regatta bringing about 400 rowers to D.C.
The Strokes continued to race sprints and
head races through the season and had
great success at regattas in Grand Rapids
and Cleveland.
The Capital Tennis Association hosted
Capital Classic XXII and several players
traveled the Gay & Lesbian Tennis Alliance
World Tour stops. The group continues to
host 20 leagues across four seasons and
was honored by the United States Tennis
Associations D.C. branch as the 2014
Community Program of the year.
The Federal Triangles Soccer Club
continued to host its annual tournaments,
the Womens Indoor Cup, the Rehoboth
Beach Classic and the Turkey Bowl
along with the Summer of Freedom
soccer league. The squads traveled to
tournaments in New York and Ohio. This
years United Night OUT at RFK Stadium
drew about 500 fans.
Womens full tackle football made its
way into the LGBT sports community
of D.C. with the Washington Prodigy
becoming part of the Team D.C. Night
OUT series. The Prodigy plays in the
Independent Womens Football League
and competes against teams along the
eastern seaboard.
The District of Columbia Aquatics Club
drew about 230 swimmers to their open
water race, the 23rd annual Swim for Life
which also raises funds for those living with
HIV/AIDS and the Chester River Association.
The swimmers competed at meets
throughout the region and capped o its
year with a successful trip to Cleveland.
The Washington Scandals Rugby
Club did a lot of traveling this past year
going to events in Philadelphia, Atlanta
and Chambersburg, Pa. Several team

The Baby Boom by P.J. ORourke
will bring back memories for anyone born
between 1947 and 1964. ORourke recalls the
usual things that Boomers will remember

he nds something youve long-forgotten,
and he expounds upon it. This book is like
time-traveling to your childhood.

This exhibition features artists of varying mediums that share a common factor:
they are all under 25 years old. While being 90s babies may connect them, it is
the exploration of identity, technique and community that unies these works.
This class will focus on dierent kinds of Web-based writing, as well as on how
to market and publicize it. By the end, participants should expect to be ready
to publish one or more pieces of writing online whether on a personal blog or
