Sensory Impact: Architectural Expression for the Visually Impaired

February

she enrolled in the School of Architecture in Sarajevo. During the first three years of college, she received
recognition for several of her projects.
With developing countries now a fundamental part of the global economy, the world has never been so
competitive. The skills one needs to survive and thrive in this environment are thus very highly valued however, these are not skills one can simply buy. A degree in architecture is about refining your mind
more than anything else. One must learn the iterative process, how to draw technically, and the
engineering know-how to support your designs. In 2012, Mia-Martina arrived in Zagreb, where she is
preparing for her final exam to enter graduate school for architecture. With a Masters in Architecture, MiaMartina hopes to have a positive impact by creating distinct and transformative spaces that increase
livability and work towards environmental, economic, and social sustainability.

How do we customize the architecture of cities, parks, buildings and rooms for the visually impaired? How do we
provide a safer environment? And most importantly, how do we understand their perception of space? The main
issue for all of these questions is that we do not understand, we do not 'see' the world with their senses.
I propose a conceptual building that stimulates for the sighted, the way of life for the visually impaired.
The building is divided into the 'Black Building' and the 'White Building '. The interior of the first is
conceived as a space in which a person is submerged into total darkness. Without any light, the sighted are met
with obstacles and a disorienting cacophony of noises that would be experienced on the street,
in the city
park, and in the home.
In the second space, blinding glasses obscure vision.
However, the interior purposefully stimulates taste,
hearing, touch and smell in order to orient the visitor
and guide them through the spaces. They are provided the
chance to experience architectural meaning through their
non-visual senses.

material.
Joel Zincone
Joel received his Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Master of Architecture from Lawrence
Technological University in Southfield, Michigan. His inclination towards a theoretical, yet hands-on
approach allows him the freedom to explore concepts through research and application, specifically
looking to new uses for existing materials. On a larger scale, he believes that the built environment has
the ability to positively affect the social, physical, and physiological well-being of society at large. His
experiences throughout Western Europe have greatly influenced his appreciation for the urban
environment where emphasis is placed on the quality of the public realm, both physically and socioculturally. Joel is currently an Intern Architect at Glos Associates where he is involved in all aspects of

Architectural Intervention,
Boundary Between Art and Technology
Nowadays, we are all connected each other somehow...... When it comes to thinking about Cultural life, we
cannot simply ignore the relationship between technology and art. The goal of this architecture is to encourage the dialogue between technology and the arts with a core theme of communication, thereby building
an affluent society for the future. Through such dialogue, it also aims to become a network that links artists,
scientists, community members, as well as a center for information exchange. The key point of this architecture is responding and hamonizing surrounding, diverse people. In order to do it, This architecture is a part
of the park and it also acts as certain program at somewhere.
Ultimately, this is a kind of exploration for further possibilities of communication.
