living on the streets of Miami Beach. Morris asked the officers for assistance in
reuniting with his goddaughter in Ohio, and they agreed with the condition that
he stay out of trouble and stop drinking. Keeping his end of the deal, the officers
were successfully able to find Morris goddaughter and on their own dime, drove
Morris to a Greyhound station and sent him on a one way, direct trip to Ohio.
His goddaughter was thrilled to have him back for the holiday season after so
manyyears.

MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
A permanent, robust traffic monitoring and
management system capable of changing
signal timing to avert heavy congestion will
be installed on Alton Road south of 41
Street, MacArthur Causeway, 5 Street and
Collins Avenue north of 26 Street and 41
Street. This technology has been used during
major special events, including Art Basel,
Miamis International Boat Show and Winter
Music Conference, with much success. Travel
times have been reduced up to 230 percent
in comparison to a baseline event when no
traffic monitoring or management

ALL READY
RISKY BUSINESS
By Shari Holbert Lipner
ROOF:
Analyze Any loose tiles or
shingles? Any rot, leaks or
damage? Is your roof secured with
hurricane straps? (Note: Be safe.
Dont do this alone or if you are
not capable).
22
MOLD:
Analyze Mold can form after
flooding or whenever there is extra
moisture buildup.
Reduce Risk Keep indoor humidity
low, prevent moisture buildup. If you
discover mold, use a 1:9 bleach
and water solution and some
elbow grease.
GENERATORS:
Analyze If you have a portable
generator, did you leave fuel in it
from last hurricane season? Is there
enough power capacity to run all
the electricity in your home?
Reduce Risk Consider installing
a whole-house stand-by generator.
Also, generators should not be used
or stored indoors.
LEAD:
Analyze Was your home built
before 1980? If you are in doubt
about the presence of lead, you
may purchase a test kit or hire a
professional inspector. Long-term
exposure to lead paint can be most
dangerous for children.
Reduce Risk Hire a professional to
remove and dispose of paint.
AWNINGS:
Analyze Is the awning frame bent
or compromised in any way?
Reduce Risk Aluminum awning
frames are recommended. Have a
structural engineer check that your
awning meets code. Remove the
fabric from the frame when making
storm preps.
RADON:
Analyze Florida law requires
testing for radon in certain facilities
as prescribed in Florida Statute
404.056. If you are not sure if
your home has been tested, you
can purchase a test kit to detect this
natural, radioactive gas that can
seep up from limestone rock under
your foundation. Radon is the second
leading cause of lung cancer.
Reduce Risk Seal any cracks in your
foundation. If the solution is greater
than DIY efforts, hire a
professional contractor.
WINDOWS:
Analyze Are all doors secure?
Reduce Risk ENTRY DOOR:
Best to have at least three hinges.
Deadbolt should be at least one
inch long. PATIO DOORS: Sliding
glass doors must be protected if
there is a storm. GARAGE DOOR:
Very susceptible to wind damage.
Must be shuttered in a storm.

The Story
of the Century
By Seth H. Bramson, Miami Beach City Historian
1870s
28
1900s
John S. Collins, a wealthy Quaker from New Jersey, and
his son-in-law Thomas Pancoast, journeyed south to take a
look-see and Collins fell in love with what he saw. They
purchased the island from Field and Osborne for $1.25 an
acre, and successfully planted avocado, papaya, mangoes
and potatoes. With the success of their crops, they hoped
to attract automobiles and sell some of their acreage. As
such, they embarked on the construction of a three-mile long
wooden bridge from the mainland to what, by then (1910
1911) was being called Ocean Beach. Unfortunately, they
ran out of money about half-way across the bay and began
looking for an angel who would help them finish the bridge.
As, emprendieron la construccin

Lincoln Road
In 1960, Lincoln Road merchants enlisted nationally
renowned architect Morris Lapidus to plan and
design a pedestrian mall, closed to automobile traffic,
where Lincoln Road had been. Lapidus constructed
a series of concrete bollards and shade structures
and widened the sidewalks, stating A car never
bought anything. The mall fell on hard times for some
years, but today, it is one of Americas most desirable
shopping locations.
During the 1960s and 1970s Miami Beach was a
magnet for the countrys greatest entertainers. Besides
the Surfside Six television show being produced
here, Jackie Gleason moved his variety show to
Miami Beach Auditorium and the citys famous hotels
competed for the likes of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis,
Jr., Dean Martin and the Rat Pack, Eddie Fisher,
Liberace, Count Basie and his Orchestra, Elvis Presley
and many more. Along with that, Presley and the
Beatles visited in the early 1960s, and Miami Beach
became a favored venue for movie production during
that time.

espite best efforts, a beloved dog or cat can slip through an open door,
gate or window and disappear. If your pet is wearing a collar with an
identification tag, chances are good that you will get them back. But what if
the collar comes off or the tag becomes hard to read?
Microchips provide an extra level of protection in case your pet goes astray.
Providing your cat or dog with both tags and a microchip can help ensure a joyful
reunion if your companion goes missing.
When I first come across a lost pet, I check for an identification tag on the collar.
If thats not available, I immediately scan the found/lost pet for a microchip, said
Officer Mariana J. Garcia, Miami Beach Polices first animal resource officer who
takes great lengths to ensure pets are returned safely.
Thanks to microchip technology, Officer Garcia has been able to reunify dozens of
Miami Beach pets with their families. Most recently, she reunited Armando, a lost
pooch, with his owners in a record 20 minutes. A Good Samaritan had brought
him into Fire Station No. 1 and he had a microchip.
Microchips are tiny transponders, about the size of a grain of rice, that use radio
frequency waves to transmit information about your pet. Theyre implanted just
under the skin, usually right between the shoulder blades.
However, implanting a microchip is merely the first step, noted Officer Garcia.
Pet owners must register their animals information correctly with the microchip
company. If you move, you must notify the microchip company to ensure they have
your updated information.
Its important not to rely on a microchip alone to protect your pet, warns Garcia.
In the event of accidental separation, identification tags are your pets first
ticket home.
Now thats technology getting under your skin.
