PRACTICE PROBLEMS:
MOMENTUM
1. Calculate the momentum of a 0.15 kg ball that is moving toward home plate at
a velocity of 40m/s.
2. Which has greater momentum, a 2.0kg hockey puck moving east at 2.5m/s or
a 1.3kg hockey puck moving south at 3.0m/s?
3. A track athlete throws a 2kg discus into a field with a velocity of 21m/s.
What is the momentum of the discus?
4. Calculate the momentum of a 700g ball that is rolling down a ramp at 4.6m/s.
5. A cannon fires a 40.5kg shell toward a target and the shell moves with a
velocity of 120m/s. Calculate the shell's momentum.
PRACTICE PROBLEMS:
POWER
1. A set of pulleys lifts a piano and does 3,356 joules of work. If the piano is
lifted in 75 seconds, how much power is used?
2. How much work is done in order to cook a bag of popcorn in a 500 watt
microwave oven for 5.5 minutes?
4. Sara and Josh do the exact same amount of work. Sara does the work in 2.3
hours and Josh does it in 2.5 hours. Who is more powerful? Explain.
5. A dock worker lifts a 375N crate a distance of 0.5m over his head in 2.3
seconds. What is his power output?
PRACTICE PROBLEMS:
WORK
1. Calculate the amount of work done when moving a 567N crate a distance of
20 meters.
5. A young boy applied a force of 2,550 N on his St. Bernard dog who is sitting
on the boy's tennis shoes. He was unable to move the dog. How much work did
he do trying to push the dog?
PRACTICE PROBLEMS:
FORCE
1. If a 4500 kg car is traveling westward with an acceleration of 35.2 m/s2,
what is the force acting on it?
3. A dock worker needs to stop a box of goods that is rolling across a manual
conveyer belt. The box has a mass of 8.35kg and is accelerating at .75m/s2.
How much force will he need to apply to the box in order to stop it?
5. How much force must be applied to a toy car that has a mass of .25kg to
achieve an acceleration of 2.4m/s2?
PRACTICE PROBLEMS:
KINETIC ENERGY
1. What is the kinetic energy of a jogger with a mass of 65.0 kg traveling at a
speed of 2.5 m/s?
2. What is the mass of a baseball that has a kinetic energy of 105 J and is
traveling at 10 m/s?
3. What is the kinetic energy of a 0.38 kg soccer ball that is traveling at a speed
of 120 m/s?
4. What is the kinetic energy of a 0.50 kg ball travelling at a speed of 120 m/s?
PRACTICE PROBLEMS:
POTENTIAL ENERGY
1. Find the gravitational potential energy of a light that has a mass of 13.0 kg
and is 4.8 m above the ground.
3. A marble is on a table 2.4 m above the ground. What is the mass of the
marble if it has a gravitational potential energy of 568 J?
4. A box with a mass of 12.5 sits on the floor. How high would you need to lift it
for it to have a GPE of 355J?
5. A cart at the top of a 300 m hill has a mass of 40 kg. What is the carts
gravitational potential energy?
PRACTICE PROBLEMS:
ELASTIC COLLISION
1. A ball of mass 2 Kg is moving with the velocity of 12 m/s collides with a
stationary ball of mass 6 kg and comes to rest. Calculate the velocity of ball of
mass 6 Kg ball after collision.
PRACTICE PROBLEMS:
WEIGHT
1. What is the weight of an 80 kg person?
