Headmasters Corner
Welcome back to a new year and a new school term. I hope that you all had a very enjoyable break and are now fully
refreshed and raring to go. The children have returned in great form and are already back in the swing of things. I would
very much like to thank and congratulate all the children and the Music Department for such a wonderful Carol Service on
the last day of term. It was so nice to see all of the children from Reception to Year 8 there; to hear such excellent singing
from our choirs and such clear confident reading from our many readers.
If I may, I would like to remind you that registration is at 8.20am each morning from Monday to Friday and it is vital that
children arrive on time so that we can start assembly at 8.35am. Regrettably, any delays do have a knock on effect to
Period 1, which should start at 8.50am. Children should also arrive on time for Saturday morning school. We are using
session one for our Bugsy Malone rehearsals and this time can only be used properly if all children are there. In addition,
may I also request that if children arrive at school late due to a dental appointment or the like, can you please bring them
to the office so that they can sign in. We thank you in advance for your help.

Eisteddfod Speech and Drama

You might be aware that the Eisteddfod for Speech and Drama is fast approaching. It will take place in Thornbury on
Saturday March 14th. It has a wide range of categories which our children usually enjoy entering. Anyone from any year
group can enter something. Classes include poetry recitals, reading aloud, story telling, Shakespeare solo, acting and so
on. Your child has been asked to register interest with me so that I can give them application forms and information about
categories to enter. At that point it is up to you to complete the forms and send them to the organisers BEFORE
TUESDAY JANUARY 20TH. NO LATE APPLICATIONS ARE ACCEPTED. Once that is done, and you have let me
know what categories you have entered your child for, I will give out poems and suggest readings and set up a rehearsal
schedule. On the day, the children will need to be accompanied by you to the competition, although, of course, I will be
there.
This is a great opportunity and most children enter year after year because they have enjoyed the experience so much.
Please consider whether you and your child can dedicate the time they will need to perform confidently in front of an
audience and check that the date is free before you apply.
Note: there is an Open Day on March 14th at school and play rehearsals also take place on Saturdays.
All information about entering for the Eisteddfod, including which age categories to enter the children into is on the official
website :

If you need any help with making an application, please let me know as soon as possible. Good Luck!

Thornbury Swimarathon 2015

Invitations are open to Years 5-8 swimmers who wish to swim in the Swimarathon at Thornbury Leisure Centre on
February 27th at 6.00pm.
Swimmers must have emailed to say that they wish to be part of the team and receive an email back confirming
acceptance on the team -the Sharks (record 157 lengths) or the Dolphins (record 144 lengths). Swimmers must meet at
Thornbury at 5.55pm and be collected at 7.10pm from Thornbury. Any pupil who would like to attend, but has transport
difficulties, please contact Mrs Hinchliffe.
Swimmers swim for 55 minutes in a team with steel band music playing and a general sense of fun! Silly swim hats are
actively encouraged. Swimmers are asked to get sponsorship for the Rotary Club which supports local projects. The
principle is that many small amounts of sponsorship money create a large team effort. Most years see a contribution
from TMS of between 250 and 400. More details are available on receipt of an email requesting a place. There are
12 spaces and these usually go quickly! bhinchliffe@tockingtonmanorschool.com
