Summer Undergraduate Research Program
The SURP early deadline is February 1 and the final deadline is March 1. The program will
begin May, 26 2015 and end July 31, 2015.
All students receive a competitive stipend of $3,500 for the ten-week program. Additional
funding for housing and travel may also be available.
SURP provides an intensive 10-week research experience designed to help undergraduates
perform outstanding cutting edge research at Pitt. Students are matched with research mentors,
participate in weekly seminars and lab meetings and conduct laboratory based research. Housing
in a modern University dormitory is provided along with social activities that enable students to
enjoy life in Pittsburgh. At the program's conclusion all students write up their work and give
presentations on their projects
2. Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai:
TIFR is the holy mecca of research in India!! TIFR conducts a Visiting Students Research
Program (VSRP) annually for students interested in being a part of world class research work.
This program is highly competitive and more details about the application process and

The deadline for application submission is January 15, 2015.
3. National Center for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bangalore:

NCBS offers training opportunities to science and engineering students who are interested in
working under the supervision of scientists and faculties at the institute. Interested students can
email professors whose research interests align with theirs and enquire about training positions
and other vacancies in their labs. Many students also do their final year semester projects at
NCBS. For more information about their training opportunities, please refer to this

4. Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc), Bangalore:


Students interested in pursuing summer internships at the IISc can email professors whose
research interests aligns with theirs and enquire about open positions in their lab. Many
students have also been placed at the IISc for summer training and internships programmes
through the two-month summer fellowship offered by the three national science academies.
Sometimes, many departments within IISc post summer internship opportunities in their
departmental website.
5. Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB), Thiruvananthapuram:
RGCB offers plenty of paid summer training programmes, skills development workshops and

6. Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB), Delhi:
IGIB offers summer training programmes (two-months duration) and final year semester
projects of 6 months and 1 year duration. Entry to the two-months program is through various
government fellowships such as JNCASR, INSA, IASc etc. The deadline for this training is in
the month of February. For students who are interested in doing their semester projects at
IGIB must email scientists whose work interests them along with their CV and other

7. Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad:
CCMB conducts a summer training programme (6 weeks duration from May - June) for
students who are in their 1st year of MSc or 6th semester of BTech or 8th semester of
integrated B.Tech-M.Tech program. Only Students who are admitted in a Masters program
(M.Sc.) in year 2014 or B. Tech program in 2012 or Integrated B. Tech - M. Tech. (5 year)

program in 2011 can apply, i.e., Students who will complete their 1st year of M.Sc. or 6th
Semester of B. Tech. or 8th Semester of Five year Integrated B. Tech - M. Tech in June/July
2015 are eligible to apply. M. Tech. students are not eligible. Computer science students with
flair for biology may also apply. CCMB also offers project dissertation programs for Biotech
and Life Sciences students. The deadline for application submission for the 2015 summer

8. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Center For Biomedical Research, Delhi:
ACBR conducts an annual Summer Undergraduate Research Program of 14 weeks duration in
the newly emerging techniques of Biotechnology. The trainees undergo both theoretical and
analytical training in biomedical sciences and biotechnology. Applications for training must
be sent to the Director of ACBR on or before 15th May every year. The link is

9. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi:
The School of Life Sciences, JNU organizes an annual summer school program of 2 months
duration. Applications are invited from students pursuing graduate or postgraduate studies in

10. Instem, Bangalore:
If you want to work on stem cell research, then this internship might be exactly what you are
looking for. Instem accepts MSc and BTech students to do their final year projects and short
term summer projects. Applications are accepted all through the year and faculty members
