r ule, t his pilgr im, Saint Thyagar Aj A, was not keen on leaving t he side of his
Aar Adhana mUr t hy at Thir uvayyAr u. He said t hr ough one of his Thodi r aaga
kr it his (KOt inadulu dhanushkot ilO): "Oh Mind! List en t o t he counsel of
Thyagar Aj A, t he gr eat devot ee of RaghunAt hA. For t hose f or t unat e souls,

Thyagar Aj A t alked about t he r eal r oad f or one t o t r avel:
“Oh Mind! Give up t he siddhis (Yogic achievement s), which ar e per ishable and
br ing you r ebir t h. Per ishable ar e t he f r uit s of t he st udy of Sanskr it , Dr ama,
Poet ics, VedAs, Pur ANAs and t he per f or mance of sacr if ices, J apa, Tapas and
KshEht r Adanam. The (r eal) r oad t o t r avel is t he wor ship of RaamA; (t hen) all
t hat one (t he devot ee) does, t he Lor d accept s wit h appr obat ion and vouchsaf es
t o him t he highest st at e t hat is ever last ing.
Wit h t his discr iminat ing knowledge (Vivekam), Saint Thyagar Aj A did not want
t o spend his t ime t r aveling anywher e and was happy t o st ay at Thir uvayyAr u
deeply immer sed in Sr i Raama Naama J apam and t he Aar Adhanam of his I sht a

kr it his (mur ipemu galigEgadhA? RaamA!): “Oh My dear One! Sr i RaamA! Ar e
you not happy st aying her e at Thir uvayyAr u (Panchanadha KshEt hr am) on t he
banks of KaavEr i r iver at my home, wher e I have built a r at hna mant apam f or
Your r esidence wit h Sit A dEvi and Soumit hr i? Why do you want t o go away
f r om your lovely home r ight her e?
I n spit e of t his r eluct ance t o leave t he side of his Aar Adhana mUr t hy, he was
per suaded by his sishyAs t o under t ake a t r ip t o Tir uppat hi, Kaancheepur am
and Sr ir angam. He included addit ional visit s t o Thir uvallikkEni and ot her
KshEt hr ams in t hat one and only pilgr image t hat he t ook in his lif e t ime
spanning eight y year s bef or e he r eached t he Lor d’s holy f eet .
We will cover t he Sr ir angam por t ion of t his pilgr image, wher e many auspicious
event s t ook place including t he bir t h of t he Sr ir anga Panchar at hna Kr it his
devot ed t o Sr i RanganAt hA.

Saint Thyagar Aj A ar r ived at Sr ir angam dur ing Chait hr Ot hsavam. He st ayed at
a house of a f r iend in Sout h Chit t r a veedhi. This was near t he cor ner of Sout h
and West Chit t r a st r eet s. I t was t he day, when Sr i RanganAt hA came ar ound
t he r Aj a veedhis of Sr ir angam on t he golden hor se (Kut hir ai Vaahanam). Saint
Thyagar aj a was st anding in f r ont of 86, Sout h Chit t r a st r eet as t he Lor d’s
pr ocession ar r ived. The gr eat NaadhOpAsakA was moved by t he beaut y of t he
Lor d on Kut hir ai vAhanam and bur st f or t h ext empor e int o t he Thodi Raaga

Rangan. The saint was disappoint ed and st ayed put in his or iginal place. Some
t hing mir aculous happened t hen. The moving pr ocession of t he Lor d suddenly
came t o a st andst ill. The t r ained bear er s of t he Vaahanam of t he Lor d wer e
benumbed and could not t ake anot her st ep. Dur ing such occasions, it is
gener ally assumed t hat some apachAr am has been commit t ed and Saant hi
cer emony is per f or med t o over come t his inauspiciousness.

r equest , deepAr Adahnam was conduct ed and immediat ely, t he bear er s of t he
Lor d’s Vaahanam r egained t heir st r engt h and t he Lor d’s pr ocession r esumed t o
