COUNTY LEGISLATOR CHRIS HIGGINS TO INTRODUCE FAMILY
AND MEDICAL LEAVE LEGISLATION FOR ALBANY COUNTY
ALBANY, N.Y. (Jan. 14, 2015) --- Today, Albany County Legislator Chris Higgins (D-Center Square)
introduced legislation to enact a policy of paid family leave for employees of Albany County.
Currently, the county requires employees to use accrued time, in lieu of compensating individuals when
they take time off following pregnancy or adoption of a child. Unfortunately, for many working people,
taking unpaid time off is virtually impossible, no matter how serious the situation. Under this proposal
employees would be allowed up to eight weeks of paid leave following pregnancy or adoption.
“Enacting a policy of paid family leave is long overdue for our dedicated and hardworking county
workforce”, said Higgins. “Out of every industrialized nation, only the United States and Papua New Guinea
fail to provide paid maternity leave. This is unacceptable and needs to change.”
“The resolution I am sponsoring will enhance the productivity of our employees while simultaneously
helping families in high stress situations following birth or adoption,” Higgins continued.
If enacted, Albany County would become the largest regional employer with a workforce of over 1,800
employees to offer such a benefit.
The resolution will be introduced at the February meeting of the county legislature and subsequently
referred to committee. The County Department of Management and Budget estimates costs associated
with this proposal to be approximately $368,000 annually.
