APRIL 2007
The schedule for April 2007 will be as follows:

MONDAY/WEDNESDAY
5:15 pm Pre-Karate (4-6 yrs) 6:05 pm Karate Kidz (7-9 yrs)

TUESDAY/THURSDAY
5:30 pm Beginners 6:20 pm Intermediate/Advanced 7:20 pm Advanced

The Clinic is mandatory for all students 9 years and older and above white belt, unless excused by Sensei Scott.
REGISTRATION: You must register for the test on or before Thursday, May 17th in order to participate in the test. You MUST bring your fees and your JKA card (if you have one) to the pre-tests you attend. Typical white belt registration will include: Costs of test $40.00 JKA membership card*(once annually) $40.00 Karate Clinic $10.00 $10.00 Belt TOTAL $100.00 TEST PROCEDURE & ETIQUETTE: The tests begin with the white belts and proceed through the ranks. There will be a series of marks (usually crosses made by tape) in front of and facing the table that Sensei Mikami, Scott & Lane sit at. There are usually 6 marks. You will be called up one by one to form the first group being tested. As your name is called, you must answer OSSU (like “ose” from Rose, except with the “s” sound emphasized) loudly and quickly make your way to the next available mark. DO NOT WALK to your mark, but quickly run to your place at about half a sprint. Take a ready (yoi) stance in front of the mark and wait for Sensei Mikami to tell you to begin your kata. KATA: When your kata is mentioned, bring your feet together with the toes at a 45° angle and bow, step back into your yoi position and announce the name of the kata (HEIAN SHODAN for instance) loudly and spiritedly. It is very important that you kiai at the correct place in the kata loudly. At the conclusion of the kata, wait for Sensei Mikami to call yame before stepping back into a yoi position. Then you may once again bring your feet together with the toes at a 45° angle and bow, stepping back into your yoi position. KIHON: Next Sensei Mikami will move the line into kihon position (it will be a staggered line vertical to the table). When you step out for kihon, with the left leg, left arm downward blocking, kiai loudly. Make sure you kiai on the third technique called each trip back and forth. Typical white belt kihon consists of three punches to the stomach stepping forward, stepping backward rising block, stepping forward inside block, stepping backward knife hand block, four front snap kicks follow. Then from kiba dachi stance, three side-thrust kicks each way. Finally, you will be paired up for three step sparring. KUMITE: (three step, one step or semi free): When you step back to attack, kiai. When you counter-attack; kiai. You will perform all three kumite techniques you have learned. At the conclusion, turn to the head table and bow to the instructors and make you way off the floor quickly. Your test is over. The results are always given at the next scheduled class (Tuesday), but out of respect please stay quietly and watch the other students test until you are told you can leave. Etiquette & respect are very important to Mr. Mikami and therefore to your test results. *The membership card represents an annual assessment / dues to the JKA and is valid for one year or 4 tests, whichever comes first. NOTE: If you cannot attend the pre-test, please pre-register at the class before the test.

The student of the month for April is Haley Hebert. Haley is an advanced student that is now a black belt. She tested at our camp this past fall and did an outstanding job. Many people commented on her impressive fighting skills and wondered where Sensei Scott had been hiding her! Haley is very talented and focused. She will do well in competition. Congratulations, Haley, on your karate accomplishments and good luck on your future karate achievements. As a recipient of the April award, she is now eligible for the Student of the Year Award given every December. Keep up the hard work and keep the school spirit high.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Your monthly tuition is now due for April. As a reminder, tuition for one student is $50.00 per month, and for two it is $85.00. Tuition is to be paid between the 1st and the 10th of the month.

MONTHLY TUITION KYU TEST

GENERAL: The kyu belt test for the students of NIKI will be held at our dojo on Saturday, April 19th. The approximate schedule will be as follows:

11:45 am 12:00 noon 1:00 pm

Arrive and check in with Black belts other than Sensei Scott (Sempai) Clinic taught by Mr. Mikami (Cost $10.00) Belt Test Begins

There will be a couple of pre-tests for all students on Saturday, April 12th at 10:00 a.m. and also Wednesday, April 16th at 6.00 p.m. There is no cost for the pretest. Registration for the test begins Saturday, April 12th. Everyone must register by Thursday, April 17th. Register early because there will be limited space for participation in the clinic. All students are encouraged to attend the Karate Clinic taught by Mr. Mikami. While it is optional for white belts, it allows you warm up, provides excellent additional experience, familiarizes the student with Mr. Mikami, and it also gives Mr. Mikami a chance to become familiar with you.
