I always wish to be part of the health care field, therefore, I grabbed the chance to

shadow in a hospital for 200 hours of summer instead of adoring my cozy home after 9 months
abroad. My parents are both physicians, role models that I followed not only on Halloween. As a
youngster I enjoyed observing my parents working, from the doctor-patient relationship to the
fuzzy rewarding feeling when patients came out healthy. Often times physicians owe much to
patients to earn their career, I lived on them ever since I was my parents child, therefore it is
reasonable that I wish to follow my parents path to reward my patients with my best effort. Yet as
one grows, certain incidents shaped him or her, and yet galvanize ones dream more or less.
My high school held preference for textbooks, resulting in my scarce exposure to lab
environment. Fortunately, my university offers not only vigorous liberal art academics but also
dynamic lab experience for science courses. Last year, I worked on a group project on fat, a
fascinating macromolecule so pervasive in our diet and essential in determining our health as
well as body image. The course of forming hypotheses, self-designing and conducting
experiments to analyze observations and thus yield a final conclusion about practical appliances
was a tedious yet rewarding process, which enabled one to mature remarkably. However, my
ambitious heart yearned for much more.
After taking courses in statistics, calculus, biology, anatomy, and organic chemistry, I
pitied not having more research opportunities on these combined so I can consolidate my
knowledge and sophisticate my publication. I have shadowing experience with respectable
physicians, yet lab atmosphere offers greater sense of belonging. Solving a puzzle is never dull
when one is well-prepared, the same goes for testing hypotheses when armed with advanced
skills and solid knowledge. This excitement allows all left brainer to transform into artists with
meticulous tailored piece of work, making researching an intriguing kind of art. This aspect of
research makes MD/PhD my new dream, instead of MD alone; as I feel the need to challenge my
ability to learn, discover and thrive better in my career field. Matthew effect supports a person
who has a good standing in lab work can enrich themselves better than conventional science
students. It keeps me seeking research experience to enhance both laboratory and deduction skill.
I wish to grow more, to look at not only any molecule but how it enhances human health and
possible innovative exploitation.
SRIP then helps me gain more research experience, with the whole summer to work in
depth on areas of interest and perfect my lab skills and thought process. Besides, I can learn
about state-of-the-arts topics rather than those in the lab manual, and experience lab as a serious
job rather than schoolwork, there I can challenge myself to grow and persist with lab work. I
favor OHSU because apart from the schools reputation with excellent faculty, it has interesting
research topics as well as astounding published articles. With the advocacy of this program, I
hope to advance professionally and publish an article with my name. Moreover, I will work
independent, not with any partner, where I feel more self-motivated to work toward the desired
degree, MD/PhD. Above all, shadowing allows me to learn about physicians work at some level
in depth but I was not able to perform any tasks on patients, this internship, on the other hand,
positions me as a novice researcher with help of excellent mentors.
