MLK WEEK FOCUSES ON THEN AND NOW By Martin Slagter Pioneer Staff Writer BIG RAPIDS — This year’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration week, “The Jim Crow Era: Then and Now,” will allow students and community members to reflect on the past in terms of race relations and how those issues remain relevant today. Taking place from Monday through Thursday, the week kicks off on Martin Luther King Jr. Day with the annual MLK Freedom March at 3 p.m. on Monday, which begins at Ferris’ Merrill/Travis Residence Hall and ends in the Rankin Center lobby. Traditionally held on Sunday, organizer and Ferris Chief Diversity Officer David Pilgrim said holding the event on Monday should allow more students to be in attendance. “We’re hoping instead of getting 100 people, we get a few hundred,” he said. “We also want to send the message that whether it’s the march or any other event, the community is welcomed and encouraged to attend.” During the week, special activities and presentations will be given by Ferris faculty, including Pilgrim, who will speak about “Stories of Activism” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Ferris’ IRC building (room 120). Pilgrim’s presentation will highlight images and stories as they relate to the Jim Crow era and Dr. King, speaking about activists and their role in creating change. Pilgrim said he hopes the presentation will not only define what it means to be an activist, but also challenge audience members to be activists. “It’s going to focus on not only what an activist is, but what it is not,” he said. “We want the audience to be civil, active and relevant activists when you’re talking about the issues they face today.” Other activities during the week include the return of the Tunnel of Oppression exhibit, which is an interactive exhibit that highlights issues of oppression in contemporary society, and the presentation of “The N*W*C* Race Show” — a theatrical and comedic show that explores self-image, stereotypes and hateful words, which takes place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Williams Auditorium. The majority of the events throughout the week are free and open to the public, said Michael Wade, assistant director for Multicultural Student Services. Wade also stressed the term “relevancy” in describing many of the events being held during the week, hoping that students and community members will be able to apply lessons learned from the past in current social issues. “You want to pinpoint certain aspects of society and ask ‘What would Dr. King do?’” he said. “I think we’ve done

a good job of growing this celebration and collaborating with different people and organizations across campus.” For a complete schedule of events for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. week, visit www.ferris.edu/htmls/studentlife/ minority/MLK2010.pdf. Martin Slagter is the Pioneer’s education reporter. He can be reached at (231) 592-8361 or by e-mail at mslagter@pioneergroup.com. Don’t Let Diabetes Wipe That Smile From Your Face (NewsUSA) - Diabetics know that they need routine health care, like checkups and eye exams, but many might not know that diabetes can also put a bad taste in their mouth. High glucose levels encourage destructive bacteria to overcrowd the mouth. The bacteria cause plaque build-up and gum disease, or gingivitis. Anyone can develop gum disease, but diabetics often struggle to fight off infections. Without a strong immune response, infections advance quickly. And gum disease, which starts off with red, sore and bleeding gums, leads to periodontitis, a serious infection of the gums and the bones of the mouth. Those who develop periodontitis often lose their teeth. The relationship between gum disease and diabetes proves a two-way street -; studies suggest that advanced gum disease raises blood sugar, making diabetes harder to control. As gum disease worsens diabetes, and diabetes worsens gum disease, patients should strive to avoid the whole cycle altogether. Some products can help. For example, EvoraPlus Probiotic Mints (www. MyEvoraPlus.com) can help keep bad bacteria at bay. The mints contain a mix of healthy bacteria, called ProBiora3, that adheres to the teeth and gums, leaving less room for bad bacteria to grow. In crowding out bad bacteria, the probiotic mints naturally support tooth and gum health. The mints also gently whiten teeth through the natural release of low-level hydrogen peroxide. Diabetics can also avoid gum disease by controlling their blood sugar. The higher the patients’ blood glucose level, the more likely they are to develop periodontitis and other oral infections. Everyone should schedule dentist appointments every six months, but diabetics must work closely with their dentists to develop oral health care plans. Dentists can offer diabetesspecific tooth care advice. If patients smoke, they should talk to their dentists or doctors about quitting -; smoking drastically increases the risk of tooth and gum disease. Diabetics should be especially careful not to neglect routine brushing and flossing. Patients should floss at least once a day and brush their teeth with a

soft-bristled brush after every meal and snack. Those wearing dentures should keep them clean. Don’t Let Your Looks Blow Your Interview (NewsUSA) - The perfect resume means nothing if you can’t sell yourself at a job interview. And most interviewers form an opinion before you shake their hand -; potential employers really do judge books by their covers. So, how can you dress to get your foot in the door? The most important element when dressing for a job interview is to evaluate your setting. Different offices enforce different dress codes -- an advertising agency, for example, might allow a little more personality than a government office. If the employer has an HR department, ask someone there about the company dress code. When in doubt, dress conservatively. While you don’t always need to wear a suit, keep in mind that you should dress for a position two levels higher than the one for which you are interviewing. If that means wearing a suit, choose a well-fitted, neatlypressed suit in a dark, neutral color other than solid black. Even if you opt for a more business-casual look, wear a collared shirt and a jacket. Make sure that all clothes fit well, are clean, and do not have loose threads or wrinkles. And, although often overlooked, remember it’s what is inside that counts. While your interviewer certainly shouldn’t see them, it is important to choose the right kind of underwear. According to a recent Calvin Klein Underwear survey that polled 600 men and 400 women (avaiable at survey.com), approximately 70 percent of those polled admit their undergarments are an extension of their personality. In addition, 80 percent say a good pair makes them feel more confident. “Whether you are wearing a crisp white shirt with slacks or a tailored suit, it’s important to set your foundation with a stylish and comfortable set of underwear,” says Jeannie Mai, celebrity stylist, host of Style Network’s “How Do I Look” and “Extra” correspondent. “Consider Calvin Klein’s Classic Two Pack Boxer Briefs (www.cku.com). They are 100 percent cotton with a traditional fit, and are sexy, yet functional, with the signature logo waistband. Available in black and white, they can lend added confidence for your interview.” To add the final touches to your dressed-to-impress style, polish your shoes to demonstrate attention to detail. Cleanly groom your hair, and you’ll show any respective employer that you mean business! Healing After Weight-Loss Surgery (NewsUSA) - Obesity is a national health crisis affecting over one-third of all American adults (72 million people).

It increases the risk for a number of serious health problems, including coronary heart disease, type-2 diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and others. For most people, the safest and most effective way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more. But for some, this is not enough. For these people, weight-loss surgery may be an option. While weight-loss surgery (often referred to as “bariatric surgery”) has been around since the late 1960s, recent advancements in surgical techniques and increased safety have made it an increasingly popular option. Last year an estimated 220,000 Americans underwent a weight-loss surgery procedure, and this number continues to grow. But healing from weight-loss surgery, including gastric bypass and laproscopic banding procedures, can be more complicated than one might expect. Immediately following, and for several days after surgery, patients are prohibited from eating, and their diet is restricted to clear liquids, including water, diluted non-acidic fruit juices, tea, artificially sweetened noncarbonated drinks, broth and sugarfree gelatin. Over the next few months, patients gradually progress from an allliquid diet to a solid food diet of 1,000 to 1,200 calories per day with several intermediate steps along the way. The problem? Water and fruit juices do not supply adequate protein that the body needs for recovery. Doctors want to improve their patients’ post-surgery nutrition, but traditional protein drinks are often too thick and heavy, contain calorie-packed carbohydrates and are unsuitable for use during the initial phases of recovery. The Isopure Company, LLC, which makes nutritional products, developed Isopure Plus Zero Carb Protein Drink to help bariatric surgery patients get the protein they need during their recovery and beyond. Unlike other nutritional drinks, Isopure Plus is clear, fruit-flavored and never thick or milky. Bariatric patients can drink it during any phase of recovery, and it provides 15 grams of high-quality whey protein and all eight amino acids in a single, 60-calorie, eight-ounce serving. The drink is lactose-, gluten- and fat-free and comes in two flavors -- Alpine Punch and Grape Frost. For more information, visit the Isopure Plus Web site at www.isopureplus.com Small Business Tax Tips That Add Up to Big Savings (NewsUSA) - In small business, it’s not about how many units of goods or services are sold. It’s about how much is left in your pocket, making every tax break matter. With small businesses still struggling to stay afloat, new laws to reduce 2009 taxes have come at an ideal time. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 includes legislation allowing qualifying

6

TRI COUNTY NEWS SHOPPER • MONDAY, January 18, 2010

00358139
businesses to reduce their estimated payments to 90 percent of the previous year’s taxes, rather than 110 percent. To qualify, a business must meet the following criteria in 2008: have an average of fewer than 500 employees, receive more than 50 percent of gross income from small business and have an AGI less than $500,000 ($250,000 if married filing separate). The ARRA also includes a capital gains tax break for those holding stock investments for more than five years. Up to a 75 percent gain can be excluded on 2009 individual returns, but limited to the greater of 10 times the taxpayer’s basis in the stock, or a $10 million gain from stock in the small business corporation. More information about the ARRA can be found at www.irs.gov and www.taxact.com/recovery-act. The ARRA also includes new rules for Net Operating Losses (NOLs). Qualified taxpayers can carry back applicable 2008 losses for up to five years (normally two years), with the fifth year limited to 50 percent of taxable income. The Worker, Homeownership, and Business Assistance Act (WHBAA) of 2009 also gave almost all taxpayers the option to carry back business losses incurred in one year (ending after 2007 and beginning before 2010) for up to five years. Unlike ARRA legislation, taxpayers electing a five-year carryback will be limited in the carryback amount under WHBAA legislation. Complete details about NOL rules can

be found by searching for “Form 1045” at www.irs.gov and www.taxact.com/ tsupport. Small businesses filing Form 1040 can also call the IRS at 1-800-8291040 with NOL questions. Corporations should call 1-800-829-4933. A break not associated with the ARRA or WHBAA is the expanded section 179 deduction that allows you to deduct costs of certain long-term tangible assets in one year. The asset must be used for business purposes over half of the time. The maximum deduction is $250,000 ($285,000 for qualified enterprise zone and renewal community property) and is reduced by the cost of section 179 property placed in service during the tax year that exceeds $800,000. Finally, consider using do-it-yourself tax preparation software like TaxACT Home & Business Bundles that cost under $55. Each Bundle includes TaxACT Deluxe and State, and your choice of 1065, 1120S or 1120C software. Answer simple questions, and TaxACT will help identify all the credits and deductions you qualify for, do the math, and complete the correct forms for you. Visit www.taxact.com for details. Deciphering Your Car’s “Check Engine” Light (NewsUSA) - Many drivers don’t know what the “check engine” or “service engine soon” warning light

on the instrument panel really means. Understanding the purpose of this light, and knowing what actions to take when it comes on, can help you nip problems in the bud -- and possibly prevent major damage. An illuminated “check engine” light is telling you the engine control computer has detected a problem that is causing the vehicle to produce excessive exhaust emissions. Sometimes the light will be accompanied by noticeable performance problems, such as an engine miss or hesitation, but other times the vehicle will appear to operate normally. Common failures that can trigger a “check engine” light include: * Failed engine-control components such as an oxygen, coolant temperature, MAP (manifold absolute pressure) or airflow sensor. * Engine misfires from faulty sparkplugs, sparkplug wires, ignition components, fuel injectors or other fuel system parts. * Emission-control failures such as loose or cracked vacuum hoses, a loose or missing gas cap or a defective EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve. How you should react to a “check engine” light depends on how the light behaves. If the light comes on for a little while and then goes out, you may have had a momentary problem in the system. The light goes out when the problem stops, but the computer could

have stored a diagnostic trouble code in its memory. If the light does not recur, it can be ignored. However, if the light comes and goes intermittently, take the vehicle in for a checkup. If the light comes on and stays on, the car has an ongoing problem. While that problem may not be severe, it will negatively impact your car’s performance, gas mileage and exhaust emissions. Take your vehicle to a repair shop as soon as possible for further diagnosis. If the “check engine” light begins to flash on and off, a severe problem is causing the catalytic converter to overheat. This can destroy the converter and possibly even start a fire. If your repair shop is nearby, drive there immediately. If the shop is some distance away, shut off the car and call for assistance. Always have the cause of a flashing “check engine” light investigated right away to prevent damage to important components that can greatly increase the cost of repairs.

AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities can diagnose “check engine” light problems and provide a full range of vehicle maintenance and repair services. Approved Auto Repair shops meet AAA’s high standards for customer care and technical proficiency. To locate a shop near you, look for the AAA Approved Auto Repair logo or visit www.AAA.com/repair.
