the little black book for every busy woman

from the editor
The f∏st issue of The Little Black Book was published in January 2000, and this issue marks 10 years of bringing you the best of the best. Born from a need to f ind quality businesses and service providers when one doesn’t know where to turn, we know that if you need some advice, you ask another busy woman. Every step of this process depends on you – our readers and supporters – sharing your recommendations with us. We thank you for your expertise, your words of wisdom and your willingness to help other busy women. If we can ever be of help, please let us know. It is an honor to serve this community, and work with you to spread the word about the great businesses serving the Lowcountry. Thank you and have a great 2010!

What Job Do I Want?
Nella Barkley of Crystal-Barkley Corp. (www.careerlife.com) has helped people find their personal career and life paths for over 20 years, and has shared this “starter” for every busy woman on her own journey. But, what sort of job do I want? If you don’t want to find yourself wandering like an Alice in Wonderland, you might try asking yourself a few direct and personal questions – 1) If I could change one thing about the world, it would be: 2)My best skills are: 3) I want to live in a community which: 4) The traits I most want in a boss are: 5) Or, do I want to be my own boss? In which case, what is my risk tolerance? 6) I really want to learn how to: 7) Who do I know dealing with any of the above? Who do I know who might know someone who does? 8) What do I recall doing with the most pleasure? 9) What do I believe is my top accomplishment in life to date? 10) In 2020 what do I want my top accomplishment to have been? Now, put your answers together and go out and start talking with people about their view of the needs in the areas that you know are right for you. Nothing is as attractive as the power of your genuine interest!

betty buzz: SMall buSineSS loan Packaging
securing a business loan means being prepared with the necessary paperwork. busy woman, cindi rourk, Loan officer with the charleston Local Development corporation, shares advice for putting together the materials you need before applying for a loan. • Start with an updated business plan. any “dust” could signal the business owners’ lack of interest (or worse, dedication!) • Include the financial numbers – a set of projections, broken out monthly for the 1st year and annually for years 2 & 3. • Show how much the entire project costs, and include how much the owners are investing and exactly how much is needed to borrow. Lenders typically like to see owners invest 20% or more of the project cost. • Gather personal information. A current personal financial statement and tax returns for 3 years for every business owner with 20% or more ownership. • If you haven’t checked your credit report lately, it’s time. Try www.annualcreditreport.com. Dispute any inaccuracies before submitting, or explain the information in the application. • Describe the collateral offered to secure the loan in detail. • Be prepared for any questions the lender may have for you. • Don’t take rejection personally! Business loans are not personal loans – banks can decline because of issues related to their bottom line, not yours. • Don’t go it alone. Contact your closest SCORE office or the Small Business Development Center for free business consultation (www.smallbusinesscharleston.org). • If declined by traditional banks, try an alternative lender like the Charleston Local Development corporation (www.charlestonldc.com).

Used Car Buying Tips
• Only deal with a salesperson you feel comfortable with. • When negotiating, use a method you feel most at ease with (email, phone or fax). • If you’re financing, get your own credit report and get loan information from your bank or credit union to have figures to compare with the dealer’s offer. • Make an offer as low as is feasible based on research and the current market. It’s best to negotiate up.

“Charleston’s flooding is a part of living in the Lowcountry. For the life of your car and your personal safety: do not drive through standing water! If you know the depth of the water and MUST drive through it, be sure to keep your foot on the accelerator at a slow, steady pace and don’t let off the gas, as your exhaust system may uptake water.” – JOHN BUDDIN, ASE Certified Mechanic

The day you get married is not an ordinary day. Why celebrate with ordinary flowers? No pre-set package deals forcing you to fit a standard. Visit us in our new location.

Toast of the Town
- Generally, there are 3 toasts given at a wedding reception: the best man, the bride’s father and the groom. - Make sure all glasses are full prior to beginning the toasts. - Do not use a fork or knife to “ting” the glass; ask for everyone’s attention. - Start the toast by stating your relationship to the bride and groom. - Use personal stories, fond memories you have of the bride and groom, for the best impact, and be respectful. - Humor is great as long as it is tasteful. Consider ending on a serious note for well wishes to the newlyweds.

Wedding Makeup Advice
• For morning ceremonies, use lighter colors, especially if the ceremony is outdoors. • Evening events require a darker makeup application, but don’t get carried away. • Consider the lighting of your venue. If you must be under fluorescent lighting, make sure to avoid green tones of makeup. • For the brightest smile on your big day, begin using whitening strips at least two weeks in advance. And, wear red or berry lipstick to make teeth appear whiter.
