Gender equality is promoted in todays society. The Gender
Inequality Index (GII), which measures the level of gender
inequality in the world, shows that there is a decrease of gender
inequality in most countries of the world in 2000-2013 (Human
Development Reports). Nowadays, women are allowed to be
working at an office rather than staying at home. In a world where
gender equality is supported, it is necessary for women to be
treated as equally as men. However, women sometimes feel a lack
of equality in real life. Men are frequently portrayed as the more
superior and appreciated gender than women. The aspect of gender
equality is also rarely seen in the bible. The bible has majorly
focused on men than on women. Christian women needed to know
their roles as a Christian woman by understanding the content of
the bible to be able to recognize their roles.
The Role Of Women In The Bible
It is important for women to understand their roles so that they
know the purpose of their life. The roles of women in the bible have
given a lot of examples of women that are stated in the bible, both
in the Old Testament and the New Testament, which could help
Christian women to learn their roles.
Gender inequality is sometimes misunderstood as the result of
sin in the fall of man. According to Slick, In the Old Testament, the
roles of women can be seen in Genesis 2 before the fall of man
where Authority is naturally seen (Slick, Genesis 2, Adam and Eve,

and Authority .) After the creation of Adam, He has the
responsibility to take care of the Garden of Eden, but Adam was
lonely. Eve, who was a woman, was created as a helper for Adam.
The fact that the woman is created from a mans rib also signifies
that the woman is a part of him. However, being a helper doesnt
mean that women are less important than men. The Hebrew word
Ezer used in the passage is the same word used to describe God
as a helper in Psalms (What Does the Bible Say About Women's
Rights). This means that women are created to help men and be
their helper, not their slave.
In the Old Testament, it is also shown that there are
important leaders that are women. In Exodus 15:20, Miriam was a
prophetess and a leader of the women, leading them to praise and
worship. Other than Miriam, Esther was also a queen that was
stated in the Old Testament for being a great leader (New
International Version). This can signify that there is equality in
gender roles for both men and women, where women can also be a
great leader.
However, in the New Testament, women are mentioned more
frequently as a part of society. In Jesuss healings, there were
several women, who were healed by Jesus, like Simons mother-inlaw, who was sick of fever in mark 1, or a woman who was sick and
touched Jesuss Garment and was healed in Mark 5 (New
International Version, (Turner, Women as Model Disciples in the

Gospel of Mark). Jesus never discriminates women, and is willing to
heal them. Jesus pays attention to Women and their good deeds,
like the widowed woman who gave all she had as a sacrifice to the
treasury, or the women who pours the box of alabaster ointment to
Jesuss feet (Turner, Women as Model Disciples in the Gospel of
Mark). In Mark 3:35, it is stated that Jesus said, For whoever does
the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother. (Turner,
Women as Model Disciples in the Gospel of Mark; New
International Version). Jesus has set an example of treating women
equally, and pays attention to the women in the New Testament.

The Role Of Women In The Family

In Genesis 3:16-19, it is stated that I will greatly increase
your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children.
Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you." God
declared that Men would rule over Women. This verse arises
confusion in Christians as this verse creates a seemingly unequal
status of men and women. Adam was also given punishments, in
which the ground will be cursed and he should work hard to get
food (New International Version). Actually, these punishments were
given to both of them by God. He did not lower the status of
women, and it doesnt mean that men should rule harshly upon
women (What Does the Bible Say About Women's Rights). In
Greek, Submission is called Hupotasso which means to voluntarily

follow (Poston, What does it mean for a wife to submit to her
husband?). This means women are not forced to be his husbands
slave, but rather choose to follow the lead of her husband.

The Role Of Women in Ministry

In present day church, there are different views on women in
the ministry. According to the Bible in 1 Corinthians 14:33-35, it
states that women are not allowed to speak in church (New
International Version). However, it is not 100% true. The fact that
women in the early churches are uneducated can be one of the
reasons that the verse doesnt really apply for women today. Also,
women are not treated equally in the society, because of an
inequality in gender in the early society, where women are
considered in the same level as children ("What Does the Bible Say
About Women in Ministry?") now that there is less inequality in
gender roles, people start to wonder; are women allowed to speak
in churches?
Until these days, there were no absolute answers to that
question whether or not women are allowed to be a pastor in
church. Some churches believe that women should be treated as
equally as men. In Matthew 28:19, the bible stated, Therefore go
and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (New International
Version). This bible verse does not specify that a pastor should be a

specific gender. This means a woman can be a pastor, as long as
they committed themselves to God and spread Gods word to every
nation. Although some churches allow women to be pastors, there
are also several churches that dont allow women to be pastors.
Some churches believe that if all of Jesuss apostles are men, and
the bible prohibits women to speak in church. They believe that
those verses still apply to their lives and women will forever be
banned from ministry.

Even if gender equality is promoted in the present, there will
still be problems in understanding the absolute role of women.
Knowledge of the bible is needed for women to understand their
roles. In the family, they are expected to respect and love their
family, just like they love themselves. God has created man and
women equally, as Galatians 3:26-28 has stated, So in Christ Jesus
you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were
baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is
neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male
and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (New International
Version). Both male and female are equal in Christ.
