Germantown soccer players announce college plans
BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
Six Germantown High School soccer players announced their college
plans during National Signing Day
Feb. 4.
Feb. 4 was National Signing Day,
the first day when high school athletes
could formally accept scholarships for
several sports, including football and
soccer. Others announced their plan
for schools that don’t offer scholarships.
“It’s not an easy task to play at the
collegiate level. It’s a testimony to these
individuals and the work ethic they’ve
had since they played in club, since
they were able to kick a soccer ball, up
to where they are now,” Germantown
girls soccer Coach Paul Sikinger said.
“It’s going to be kind of cool to see how
they do in the future in regard to playing at the next program. But all the hard
work they’ve put up to this point, it’s
going to pay off today.”
The four girls players announcing
their plans were Jenni Poss and Dani
Schuyler (both Cardinal Stritch), Jensen
Meyer
(Carroll
College) and
Mackenzie Challoner (Winona State).
“I just fit well to the campus and like
the (team) there. It just suited me,”
Challoner said of Winona State.
Challoner said Winona State, an
NCAA Division II school, first

expressed interest at the end of her junior year. Challoner also talked with
Northern Illinois, UW-Green Bay and
UW-Milwaukee.
“Winona State was just a better fit
for me,” she said.
Challoner played two years on the
Germantown varsity squad in addition
to playing the club season with North
Shore United.
Schuyler said Stritch started
expressing interest in October 2013.
She said there were a few other schools
in the running.
“I really liked the team, I liked the
girls that went there, I like the area. I
like that it’s by bigger colleges but it’s
still in the city,” Schuyler said of Stritch.
She said she plans to major in biochemistry.
Schuyler has played on the varsity
squad for the past three seasons at
Germantown. She currently plays with
the Bavarians during the club season.
Poss said Stritch “feels like I’m at
home.” She said the Bavarians club
team she plays for had a fun game
against the Stritch squad. Afterward,
Poss was contacted by the Stritch
coaches and was invited to practice
with the team.
Poss said she was talking with
Viterbo and Winona State along with
some Division III schools during the
recruiting process.

Freight shipments are only for big businesses, right? WRONG! A freight
shipment doesn’t have to mean a whole semi trailer of parts. A freight shipment can be anything that is too big to ship through UPS, such as large artwork, motorized vehicles, heirloom family furniture, or anything that needs
to be palletized. At The UPS Store, we can help find the best service option
to fit your shipping needs, schedule and budget. Like we can do for small
packages, we can comparison shop your large shipments to get you the
best price! Did you know freight can also be a cost effective solution if you
have a large quantity of packages all going to the same place, like a family
member moving out of state? You don’t have to pay to ship each box individually. Palletize the boxes as one secure shipment and save!

...2 Germantown players going to Cardinal Stritch
From page 1
has been in communication Sikinger about Germantown
players. Brennan said he first saw Poss and Schuyler when
they first played for FC-Milwaukee and later when they
moved to the Bavarians program. He said he started recruiting Poss and Schuyler during their junior years.
“Academically we were a good fit, geographically we
were a good fit,” Brennan said. “From a soccer perspective I
know they’re going to be a great addition.”
Meyer said she plans to play at Carroll because she likes
the school and the nursing program. Meyer said she went to
a soccer camp at Carroll and Carroll coaching staff saw her
play later in the year.
“I just really like the academics,” Meyer said.
Meyer has played on the Germantown varsity team the
past three seasons while playing with the Bavarians during
the club season. Carroll University is an NCAA Division III
school.
Two boys players announced their plans to play for
Division III schools, which don’t offer scholarships. Zack
Knudson will play at UW-Oshkosh while Jacob Agbuis plans
to play at Concordia.
“I just liked the school. It’s not too far from home,”

Knudson said of Oshkosh. He said he plans to major in computer science.
While at Germantown, Knudson was first team all-conference in 2013 and second-team all conference in 2012 and

2013. He plays with Bavarians during the club season.
Agbuis has played on the varsity team with Germantown
and with North Shore United during the club season. He said
he plans to major in sports medicine at Concordia.

School Board approves
open enrollment seats
The Germantown School Board offered
a total of 25 seats through the open enrollment and Chapter 220 programs.
Open enrollment is a state program
through which non-district students can
attend district schools, with parents responsible for transporting students to the school.
Under the Chapter 220 program, minority
students from Milwaukee Public Schools
can attend suburban districts while nonminority students suburban schools can attend
Milwaukee Public Schools.
During the Jan. 26 School Board meeting, Jayne Borst, Chapter 220 and open
enrollment coordinator, said the goal is
have Chapter 220 students begin at early a
grade as possible. Under the proposal
before the board, six seats were opened up
at the third grade level for Chapter 220 students while all the remaining seats — three
in fourth grade, 13 in fifth grade and three
in the ninth grade — were opened up for
open enrollment students.
Borst added that students who are currently attending the district along with their
siblings would be first priority for the open
seats.
Board member Bruce Warnimont said
he would oppose the making the additional
seats available through the Chapter 220
and open enrollment students.
“Just because we have the room now
we don’t need to cram the box completely
full,” Warnimont said. “I realize this is a
tremendous revenue opportunity for the
Germantown School District, but we’re
bursting already.”

Board member Lester Spies replied that
no seats were opened at the kindergarten
through second grade level because there
isn’t any space available at those level.
“We just don’t have the space for it,”
Spies said at those levels.
Board President Robert Soderberg indicate that even with the added seats offered
through the two programs, the district will
be within its enrollment metrics for the coming school year.
The motion was approved 5-2, with
Warnimont and Sarah Larson voting
against it.
Finance Committee items approved
The board approved spending $5,000
related to staging a standards “summit”
and Florian Conference & Banquet Center
March 20-21.
The board also approved linking
Kennedy Middle School to the village
municipal water system at a cost of
$114,241 in plumbing. Board member
Michael Loth said the move will transition
the school from its well system and allow for
the possibility of having a sprinkler system
installed in the school in the future.
The school will be linked to the village
municipal system through a connection from
Williams Drive.
In another matter, Loth said student fees
at the elementary and middle school levels
will not change while high school fees are
“still open,” with that item to be discussed at
a future committee meeting.

Safe, secure and beautiful
By Tresa Erickson
Lighting is one of the most important
features of a home, indoors and out. It provides illumination for tasks inside and
keeps burglars away outside. When chosen well, lighting can also enhance a
home’s beauty. Here are some tips the
next time you change or add to your outdoor lighting.
Outdoor lighting comes in many types.
Post lights are mounted on a post, which is

usually located near the driveway. Wall
lights are mounted on walls near exterior
doors—on each side of the garage door,
for example. Ceiling mount lights are
mounted on the ceiling of a porch or portico to illuminate the front entrance.
Hanging lights serve the same purpose as
ceiling mount lights but make more of a
statement in grand entrances and tall
porches.
Make a list of the outdoor lights you
need and the amount you have to spend,
and then get ready to shop. Outdoor lights
come in a variety of styles. Look for a style
that complements the style of your home.
While lanterns might work well for a
beach house, they may not suit your contemporary home. You might need a sleeker, cleaner style.
Finish is another aspect to consider.
Again, look to your house as a guide. If

you have a lot of brass, brass fixtures are
the way to go. If you have a lot of ironwork, look for black fixtures. If you have a
lot of chrome, look for chrome fixtures.
Scale is vital. Too small or too large of
lights can detract from the beauty of your
home. Look for appropriate sized lights. If
you are looking for wall lights for a twostory home, for example, you should focus
on lights that are 18 to 24 inches tall. Pay
attention to the elements in the area where
the lights will go. While you might adore
hanging lights, having one in your small
portico might not work. You don’t want
guests hitting their head on the light every
time they enter or exit your home.
Want to make your home really glow?
Update the outdoor lighting. Determine
your needs and look for the right style, finish and scale to create a safe, secure,
beautiful home.

Board supports industrial revenue bonds for company move to village
The Germantown Village Board
approved issuing an industrial revenue
bond that will allow for a Cedarburg company to move to the village.
The industrial revenue bond is a federal program in which the village is a conduit
for federal bonds for industrial development or redevelopment. Any liability is covered through insurance and guarantees
from the federal government.
Machining Concepts is proposing to
construct a 34,500-square-foot facility at
W188 N12050 Maple Road. The village
agreed to issue $2,140,000 in industrial
revenue bonds for the project. The project

will be owned by Germantown Realty
Investment LLC.
During the Feb. 2 Village Board meeting, Village Administrator David Schornack
said the project involves acquiring approximately 8.5 acres of land. Schornack said
the industrial revenue bonds has nothing to
do with village debt obligations. He said
the biggest reason opt for industrial revenue bonds is to take advantage of lower
bond interest rate and a higher rating on
the bonds.
“It saves them money and yet does not
put us in harm’s way of any kind,”
Schornack said.

Germantown Fire Department
seeking Paid-on-Call staff
The Germantown Fire Department (GFD)
is looking for men and women who want to
make a difference in our community by
becoming a Paid-on-Call Firefighter or EMT.
The work is hard but the rewards are great.
The GFD is a combination fire department, which means there are a small number
of staffed firefighters but the majority of the
members are paid-on-call. That means when
an emergency incident occurs firefighters
come from their homes to the fire stations to
respond. While this is cost effective, we
need you, We Need You to become a member of our team.
If you want to be part of a dynamic
group of men and women who are willing to
provide emergency service to their community 24 hours a day, We Need You. If you
ever saw an ambulance or fire truck
responding to an emergency or witnessed a
car accident and wished you had the knowledge to help, We Need You.
If you want to go home knowing you

made a difference in someone’s life, or
saved someone’s property, We Need You.
We will provide you with the training to
be a firefighter and EMT, with the equipment
to operate safely and with other team members to mentor you.
If you have any questions you can visit
our RECRUITMENT CENTER PAGE on the
Village of Germantown’s Web Site at
www.village.ger mantown.wi.us
<http://www.village.germantown.wi.us>
and select the fire department tab. You can
find additional information about our department and team as well as view a video about
becoming a Paid-on-Call member.
We Need You to become part of our
team.
If you have any questions please contact
Chief Gary Weiss at 262-502-4701 extension 1701.

He added the industrial revenue bond
request is similar to others approved by the
village within the past few years. No one
spoke at the public hearing and the item
was approved by the Village Board.
In another matter, the board approved
the purchase of two Ford SUV police interceptors to replace two existing squad vehicles which have 100,000 and 80,000
miles on them.
The board approved the purchase of
the two vehicles from Ewald Ford for a total
amount of $81,364, which includes addi-

tional equipment requested by the department. Capt. Michael Snow said Ewald was
the only dealer that submitted a bid with the
optional equipment requested by the
department. Snow said a backup camera
was among the items requested by the
department.
Snow further stated the cost of the
squads decreased from last year, and that
with the additional equipment the cost is up
only slightly from last year.

Boys basketball: Germantown
remains undefeated
The Germantown boys basketball team
started fast against Cedarburg Jan. 30,
opening up a 19-2 lead after the first four
minutes on the way to a 89-61 win.
The Warhawks scored the first seven
points of the game and extended the lead
to 19-2 following a three-point basket by
Juwan McCloud at the 4:05 mark of the
first quarter. Cedarburg cut the lead to 2512 by the end of the quarter but
Germantown scored the first seven points of
the second quarter to take a 32-12 lead following a layup by Kyle Theis at the 5:42
mark of the second quarter. Germantown
held a double digit lead the rest of the way.
Theis led Germantown with 29 points
while McCloud added 24 points, including
five three point baskets.
Afterward, Assistant Coach Mark
Adams said that during the week coaches
told the team this was one of the most
important stretches of the season, as
Germantown had eight practices prior to
the Cedarburg game.
