By MARK LUBE

The Cuero Lady Gobblers wasted little time in

setting the tone of the game
against Gonzales as they
opened with a 10-0 lead
and never looked back in
a 53-27 win over the Lady
Apaches Tuesday evening.
The game marked the
end of the regular season
for the Lady Apaches, who
finish the year with a 1-11
record in district and getting a 30-24 win over Yoakum on Jan. 30 as the district victory.
Lady Gobbler Martina
Stavinoha sank seven of
the points in Cueros gameopening run, getting three
baskets and a free throw.
The Lady Apaches only
points of the first frame

came as Jordan Pitman set

up Mary Hastings for the
score.
Cuero got basket by
Chelsea Veit to hold a 12-2
lead at the end of the frame.
Gonzales worked to
come within 15-7 in the
second period as Hastings
hit two baskets and Ericka
Hernandez made a free
throw.
The Lady Gobblers then
scored six of the next points
and Gonzales got the last
score as Skylea Tatsch assisted Kendra Williams on
a two-point field goal.
Cuero went on an 8-0
run for a good part of the
third quarter before Gonzales went on a 6-1 run,
with a three-point play
from Claudia Franklin and
points from Sheridan Tate.
Cuero then put the game

out of reach with a 23-11

run during action in the
fourth quarter.
The Lady Apaches got
a three-point basket from
Hernandez and that was
backed up by points from
Hastings, Tatsch, Franklin
and Danielle Flowers.
The game was the last for
seniors Pittman, Franklin
and Flowers, leaving Gonzales with a bevy of returners for next year.

Cuero routs Apaches

The Apaches have been

facing adversity most of
the season and have been
staring it in the face all
season.
Gonzales suffered another setback in district,
falling to Cuero 81-30
Tuesday night but, like always, not because of a lack
of effort.
Our kids are still playing as hard as they can,
Apaches head coach Derek Williams said. They
are going up against play-

ers that play basketball all

year long.
A lot of the teams the
Apaches have faced have
been bigger than them.
We are under-sized but
we play hard, fight and
we never quit, Williams
said. They have always
played hard and they will
play hard for our last two
games.
Williams said despite a
tough season, the Apaches
are slowly returning to
their reputation Fighting
Apaches.
He said the Apaches
missed lots of easy jumps

shots and layups, and

struggled on rebounds.
Cuero absolutely killed
us on the boards, Williams said. We held their
guards pretty good but
their post play, Ebrom,
hurt us.
Cuero outscored Gonzales 17-8 in the opening
quarter with Edwardo Almaguer dropping in five
points and Aaron Hunt
scoring three.
The Gobblers scored 15
of 22 points in the second
frame, led by six points
from Ebrom.

MOULTON The
ingredients for a nervewracked game were there
for the Moulton Bob Kittens Friday night at home
against Dime Box.
The Kittens had a chance
to clinch the district title
with one game left after tonight and send their 201415 seniors off the home
court with a win.
Moulton started slow,
taking just a 5-0 lead after
action in the first quarter
but settled down and came
away with a 41-20 win.
We did not get off to a

good start, Moulton head

coach John Meisetschleager said. There was a lot of
nerves but after we calmed
down, we were al right.
We had five or six possessions with our press that
we got steals and got a better lead.
The Bob Kitten defensive effort was great as the
Lady Longhorns were held
to just one point in the first
half and did not score their
first bucket until halfway
through the third quarter.
However, Dime Box did
finish the third period with
six points and outscored
the Kittens 13-4 in the
fourth period.

We played okay on defense and we ran them all,

Meisetschleager said. We
did a full-court press, a
half-court man and a fullcourt man.Running all of
our defenses came back to
haunt us a little bit.
Neither team could put a
point on the board during
the first three minutes or so
until a basket by Moultons
Bethany Brauer. Baily Bohuslav then went 2-for-2
from the free-throw line
and Brauer made 1-of-2 to
give the Bob Kittens a 5-0
lead.
At the start of the second

to 37-30.
Dime Box then scored
four straight points and
Crenshaw grabbed a steal
around the 1:55 mark
and scored to get his team
within 37-36.
With 35 seconds left in
the game, Orsak missed a
couple of free throws but
Dime Box could not convert at the other end and
Orsak rebounded a missed
Longhorn shot.
Tanner Nichols-Ranton
hit two free throws for a
39-36 advantage with 11
seconds to play.
Fishbeck also described
the game as an almost
must-win situation for the
Bob Katz.
If we had lost, it would
have put us in a little bit
of a predicament for our
playoff positioning, he
said.
Dennis Lopez opened
the scoring in the game
with a jumper for a 2-0
Moulton lead and Dime
Box responded with two
field goals from Fritsche to
take a 5-2 lead.
A three-point play from
Lopez and two free throws
from Orsak put Moulton

back into control at 7-5.

A little later, NicholsRanton and Lopez scored
to help put the Bob Katz
ahead 11-8 at the end of
the quarter.
In the second frame,
Rothbauer made two early free throws and Orsak
connected on a pair of triples, gifting Moulton with
its biggest lead, 11 points
at 19-8.
Dime Box went on a
12-5 run to only be down
24-20 at the halftime
break. They started the
third period by getting
within 24-22 on a pair of
free throws. Moulton answered with buckets from
Orsak and Rothbauer for
a 28-22 advantage before
Dime Box ended the quarter with four of six points.

MOULTON The
Moulton Bob Katz did not
seal up the win against
Dime Box Friday night
until 1.86 seconds left in
the game when Matt Orsak made two crucial free
throws that gave the Bob
Katz the final lead of the
game, 41-36.
Moulton had led by
double digits in the second
quarter, only to see the
Longhorns gradually chip
away at the lead late in the
game.
But the passionate
Moulton fans gave their
team a much-needed lift.
There is something
around here called the
legend of the Bob Katz,
Moulton head coach Kevin
Fishbeck disclosed the details of the local urban legend. Us winning the game
was more than the kids on
the floor. They fed off the
energy of our crowd.

advantage to go into the
fourth quarter, and Orsak
converted a three-point
play and Jody Rothbauer
made a shot to up that lead
