2015 CITY BUDGET

Council has received the draft budget and is seeking public input prior to making a final decision
on March 11th. Go to ottawa.ca/budget2015 to view it. City operations have been budgeted at
current service levels with some additional funding for improving mobility, supporting prevention
of crime and gang strategy and increasing affordable housing for the most vulnerable.
For Kanata North important additions include; additional funding for bus service in developing
areas, implementation of the traffic calming measures on Knudson Drive, funding for
Richardson Ridge Park, funding for Klondike Road from March to Sandhill including a multi-use
path, funding for the expansion of Campeau from Didsbury to Huntmar (which will take several
years to complete), and funding for a number of water and sewer services (most of which are
funded from development funds paid by developers).
Major projects underway and funded in previous years include a transitway from Bayshore to
Moodie, Arts Court, the Light Rail Project and the Innovation Centre at Bayview.
In May, Council will develop a City Strategic Plan for the term of Council. A funding envelope of
$37.4 million has been included to fund Council priorities for 2015 that come out of that plan.
Included as a strategic initiative are pedestrian and cycling. Staff are recommending a multi-use
pathway along Campeau as a strategic item for Kanata North.
As well as the public meeting on the 10th, I will include time in the Town Hall meeting on Feb.
23rd for discussion of the budget and for hearing your recommendations. You can also attend or
send comments on individual department budgets including the Library, Police, Health and
Transit services.

BUS ISSUES
Many residents came out to the meeting held on February 3, to discuss the new express routes
and their problems. The 64, in particular, encounters frequent delays with riders arriving at work
or school late and returning late for children coming from school or child care. OC is working on
these issues, but they will take some time to address. New funding is in the budget for regular
service, and I am meeting with OC over the next few weeks to discuss better bus service for
Kanata North.

FAMILY DAY FREE SKATING

on Feb. 16 from 1-3 pm is being provided indoors at the

CROSSING THE 417!

The province has agreed to work with City staff to get changes to the sidewalk over the 417 so it
can be ploughed in the winter. For now, when staff clear snow from the bridge after a snowfall it
will also be cleared from the raised sidewalk. However, since access to the bridge is difficult, it
will remain officially closed to pedestrians.

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY AUDIT

A Pedestrian Safety Audit will take place on Sunday, February 15th, at 1:30pm leaving from the
Beaverbrook Community Centre. This audit is designed to identify difficulties seniors might
have walking in the winter along particular routes. To participate, contact my office.

DID YOU KNOW? That the 1967 centennial project for March Township was a new office
the size of a small bungalow - at Klondike and the Goulbourn Forced Road (now Flamborough).
