or the fuel injector. These supply the

a mixture of fuel and air. The diagram shows one

possible layout of a fuel supply system.
The metal or plastic fuel tank is at the rear of the vehicle. It is lled through a fuel supply pipe, closed by a filler
cap. A filter around the outlet pipe from the tank removes dirt and water from the fuel. Fuel passes through a
metal or plastic pipeline to the front of the vehicle. This pipeline is xed with clamps to the chassis.
When the engine is running, it moves on exible mountings. Therefore it must have a exible fuel pipe. The xed
pipeline is connected to a flexible pipe, made of plastic, which carries fuel to the pump. Both the pump and the
carburettor are xed to the engine. The engine drives the pump, which pumps fuel into the carburettor.

2 Match the words with the functions to make sentences.

1 The fuel tank

a) connects the fuel tank with the flexible pipe.

2 The fuel pipeline

b) sprays fuel into the airstream above the inlet port.

3 The filter

c) holds the fuel (petrol or diesel).

4 The pump

d) connects the fixed pipeline with the pump.

5 The carburettor

e) pushes fuel along a pipe to the carburettor.

6 The fuel injector

f) closes the end of the filler pipe above the fuel tank.

7 The filler cap

g) mixes petrol with air for the engine.

8 The flexible pipe

h) traps dirt and water.

3 Make sentences with the words.

1 fuel pipeline / suspend / chassis

The fuel pipeline is suspended from the chassis.

2 carburettor / mount / engine

3 filler cap / screw / into / end of / filler pipe
4 fuel pump / mount / engine
5 filter / fit / around / outlet pipe / from / fuel tank
6 fuel tank / bolt / body
7 flexible pipe / attach / fuel pipeline
8 fuel injector / fix / engine
