Dear Minister Aglukkaq:

On behalf ofthe Canadian Wildlife Federation, I would like to extend our full support for the adoption of
the bill C-40 to formally establish Rouge National Urban Park in the Greater Toronto Area .
Last year, as part of the CWF Conservation Achievement Awards, we were honoured to present to the
The Honourable Peter Kent, representing all of Canada's Parliamentarians, the Past President's Award in
recognition of the Federal Government's commitment to the creation of the first national urban park in
Canada. This landmark initiative to establish a national park in the heart of our largest metropolitan area
is most worthy of our recognition and appreciation.
The future Rouge National Urban Park will be a valued nature retreat to the seven million residents who
live in the vicinity, Canadians from across the country, and newcomers to Canada who will share in the
opportunity to explore some of the natural wonders our country has to offer, right in the city. For
tourists and visitors, the park will enhance Toronto's appeal as a destination location offering both
vibrant city and natural attractions.
A prime example of a Carolinian Forest, rare in Canada, the park is habitat for 23 species at risk.
Covering an area approximately 13 times the size of Central Park in New York City, the future Rouge
National Urban Park will bring nature and Canadians together in a large scale manner, allowing people
to enjoy and learn about the plants and animals that live in this unique ecosystem.
As a showcase of all that National Parks have to offer, CWF is delighted to be partnering with Parks
Canada and media sponsor OMNI Television for our first ever Great Canadian Cam pout in the Rouge on
July 19th, Canada's Parks Day. Forty people will learn the pleasures of camping and connecting with
nature while sleeping under the stars. The Rouge will also be the site for our 2015 Walk for Wildlife in
Toronto where participants will be treated to guided nature walks, highlighting the biodiversity and
conservation significance of the park.

Once again, we would like to congratulate the Federal Government on this significant milestone in
supporting a new national park in the country's biggest urban centre . It gives us great pleasure to
provide our solid endorsement of bill C-40 for the formal establishment of the Rouge National Urban
Park. We have complete confidence that Parks Canada will continue its exemplary record and ensure the
ecological and cultural integrity of the Rouge Park is maintained to the same high standard they have set
in national parks across the country. The future Rouge National Urban Park is sure to be a natural
treasure for generations to come.
Sincerely,

~~

CEO, Executive Vice-President
