Learning to Love Antiques
I can remember in my youth the distaste for anything I deemed to be old lady
stuff. My grandmother (in her own right, an old lady) loved glassware, flowers
and ceramic figurines. I detested these items, partially because I hated to clean
them every week during our routine housekeeping, but mostly because they were
old lady stuff. I resolved I would never decorate my home with anything of the
like. I was a modern girl, or at least I thought I was.
There was one piece that my grandmother adoreda large, ceramic Persian cat
with a million nooks and crannies needing to be cleaned every week. I disliked
that cat so much that I once conspired with my cousins to hide it and, thus, save
ourselves from dusting it. That feline was the bane of my existence, but I never
carried through with my conspiracy to eliminate it. My reasoning for nixing the
plot was simple partially from fear and the rest - a guilty conscious.
Through the years, the Persian cat faded into memory and perhaps into the back
of a closet somewhere. (I didnt do it!) Now, I find myself looking for another one
just like it every time I visit an antique shop. Its funny how time changes our
perspective on things. That one thing I despised in my youth; now becomes one
of my greatest desires. Ironic, isnt it? I know my longing for a ceramic cat is
because it will remind me of my grandmother, but the reason really doesnt
matter to me now. Ive learned to love old lady stuff and would love to decorate
with it. Are you looking for something that reminds you of someone you miss?
We may just have it at Norwood. We carry all sorts of old lady stuff aka
antiques. Hope to see you soon!

Decorating with Religious Antiques
Ever look at a church steeple and wonderWhat could I do
with that? This is the same question many ask themselves
when they see stained glass windows, wooden pews, and
statues of religious figures. If religious dcor is your passion,
youre not alone.
These items are fast becoming standard design elements in
our homes and, yes, offices. Some who use these objects to
adorn their homes are motivated by genuine religious
sentiment, yet some have a more worldly interest in design
trends. Either way, its a spot-on movement.
Do you collect crosses, icons or statues representing religious
figures? If so, youre part of an emerging segment of society
who wants a meaningful element in their design. These items
tend to mix freely with eclectic furnishings and are favorites
of those who lean toward a more modern element in their
dwelling.
If you are a diehard collector of religious dcor, youll know
there are rarer pieces out there such as a two-foot-high
wooden santo (an image of a saint) holding baby Jesus in one
hand and a skull in the other that dates back to the early
1800s; a prayer box with carved images of Mary and Jesus
with a drawer below for storing a rosary, candle or other
religious items; or a mid-1800s altar boy bank with a bobbing
head used to collect money for missionaries.. These items can
be considered the Holy Grailpun intended.

COLLECTING
PRESIDENTIAL
MEMORABILIA
Documenting America's political and cultural
heritage, from its birth to the present has
always been a hobby for some of the
American people.
Historically, items from the earliest
administrations are revered as the most
sought after and the least easy to find. And,
of course, our recent administrations
artifacts are more easily attained. Ironically,
despite being in the modern era, items from
Camelot (President and Mrs. Kennedys
organization) are heavily sought after,
perhaps due to JFKs untimely death.
The seasoned collector of Presidential
memorabilia has a keen eye and will collect
of all types of political memorabilia dating
back to the birth of our country and will seek
only the finest quality specimens.
Newer collectors will begin their collection
with easily attainable items such as campaign
posters and informational biographies. As
their collection grows and their knowledge
increases, they will begin to seek out less
available items such as authenticated
personal belongings and hand written letters
with inked signatures. As with any type of a
collection we all must begin somewhere and
learn as we go.
Whether your collection is extensive or you
are a beginner Norwood has a healthy supply
of Presidential items in stock. Let us know
what youre looking forone of our vendors
may have that very item. Happy collecting!
What is Americana?
Dcor or Artifacts?
Mr. Webster defines Americana as things produced in the U.S.
and thought to be typical of its culture. On the other hand,
many designers consider it a dcor style anything red, white
and blue. Theres quite a difference in these opinions, alas my
conundrum in blending the two for the purpose of this article.
In the antique world, Americana would be artifacts, related to
our nations history, geography, folklore and cultural heritage.
This could mean paintings, drawings, household objects, tools,
flags, or statues. It can also mean items associated with
anything representing a period of our heritage.
Collectors of Americana often decorate their homes with
these period pieces. For instance, if a one was interested in
the Colonial period, they would seek out items such as pewter
candlesticks and handmade Windsor chairs. Or, if a collector
is most interested in Folk Artthey would lean toward salt
glazed pottery and quilts. Finally, there are those who love to
embellish their homes with Old Glory flags and bunting alike
can be considered Americana lovers as well. Regardless of
your fancy, Norwood might just have what youre looking for
in the Americana way. Stop by soon!
