Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
1.1 Introduction
Birds of the same feather flock together, Tell me who your friends are, and Ill
tell you who you are. These are some of the sayings about friendship.
FRIENDSHIP came from the Old English word freondscipe which means mutual
liking, and regard.
Friendship came from the root word friend which can be identified as
companion, acquaintance, confidant, company and so much more.
Now a days, it is impossible to see people without friend. In schools, streets,
restaurants and many other places, we can see a group of people chatting, having
lunch and so on.
The researchers are motivated to study about the characteristics of friendship
because of the benefits and problems that we can encounter in our daily life.

1.2.1 Related Literature
A friend should be like your brother and your sister. You should be able to tell him
or her everything. Friendship is about getting each other out of difficult situations and
sticking by your friends side no matter what. It plays an important role in an ordinary
persons life. Having friends is like a blessing. Friends are always there for us, to
laugh with us in the good times and to provide us a shoulder to cry on in bad times.
They love you and care for you. They feel happy at your success and sad at your
failure. Youll never ever feel lonely when you have friends. A true friend inspires
you to live up to your best potential, not to indulge your basest drives. A friend is the
one who influence you in good things and not in bad.
