9. (25 points) A common problem of drilling oil and gas wells in deep water is the narrow
window between the formation pore pressure and fracture pressure. Figure below shows a
typical case from offshore Ghana (Hradecky and Postler, 2004).
Please identify how many casing runs you would recommend from 8,000 ft- 20, 000 ft
for this well if an intermediate casing has been set from surface to 8,000 ft. And why? Is
it safe to run 5.5", 23#/ft, PllO with long thread as production casing from surface (0 ft)
all the way to 20,000 ft.

7. (25 points) In January 2011, a Range engineer tested the Marcellus shale formation and
found a pore pressure gradient of0.83 psi/ft. We also know the formation depth is 8,000
ft, overburden is 1.1 psi/ft based on a density log and poison ratio is 0.35 based on a sonic
log. Please calculate the fracture gradient from Hubbert & Willis method and Ben Eaton
method. Based on your calculations, recommend a drilling fluid system (mud weight) to
drill through this Marcellus formation.
The company plans to use 5.5", 23#/ft, N80 with long thread as production casing from
surface all the way to 8,000 ft. Will the casing fail at 5,000 ft?
