Knitted Together

March 2015

"...speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up into Him in every way who is the head, into Christ,
from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every joint with which it is supplied, when
each part is working properly, makes bodily growth and upbuilds itself in love." Ephesians 4:15-16
RSV
"For Thou didst form my inward parts, Thou didst knit me together in my mother's womb."
Psalm 139:13 RSV

From our Pastor:
I sit this morning on a love seat next to the large front window in the manse and I see the snow. It is white beyond white. Its
whiteness outlines and contrasts with everything not snow covered in the landscape. And I think of snow in Scripture. My
mind recalls Isaiah 1:18 and I search for these words in my Bible.
“Come let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet they shall be
like snow…”
The whole first chapter is the Lord’s indictment of His people, Israel, for their faithless betrayal of His Covenant with them.
“They have forsaken the Lord; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel … Take your evil deeds out of my sight! Stop doing
wrong, learn to do right! Seek jus4ce, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the
widow.”
Why does the Lord care so deeply for His people? Why does He allow our sinfulness to affect Him. Why does the Holy Spirit
actually grieve when we are harming each other (Ephesians 4:13)? Perhaps it is because as He tells us in Isaiah 55:
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are
higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
I do not know why. I only know that it is true for the Lord God consistently reveals this loving suffering side of His nature all
through the Holy Scriptures. And that is not all that He reveals. Somehow the Lord God has this magnificent plan or design to
redeem all His sinful willful creatures. Centuries before Jesus comes to dwell among us we can read something very mysterious in the Lord’s thoughts:
“Surely, he took up our infirmi"es and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smi$en by him
and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniqui"es; the punishment that
brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we were healed.”
The snow is white and covers our sins that is all we know. We know too that the change from scarlet to white came at a great
personal cost to the Lord. This is something of what Lent (forty days before Easter not coun>ng the Sundays) is all about, a
>me to be amazed at the love of God in Christ Jesus, a >me to more fully know that “His thoughts are not our thoughts and
His ways are not our ways.”
Because He lives,

Mark
